Heeeeeelp!!!! This is driving me mad folks - I so need help!! Just bought FNV - my first Fallout game and looking forward to some game play. Install went fine and Steam updated as required.

Press play - it selects high video setting and kicks in. I see the first splash screen (legal jargon etc) then crashes to a black window on the desktop.

I've tried all the usual bits - the d3d9.dll, the remove lines form the .ini file and deleting the intro video. Still no sucess at all.

Tried using driver sweeper to clean system up, then install fresh new video driver - deleted local content of game and re-installed to no sucess.

I can't think where to go next I'm afraid - so its time for me to pass this onto the forum collective for help.

Please someone help me on this - before i go totally mad over this one!!!

Your soundcard drivers look outdated. You should check your motherboard drivers too.

You should also try to start the game under a clean boot to windows.

Many thanks for the reply. I've tried the driver updates ( not required at this time - all up to date) and just tried the selective startup and got the same crash before the intro screen.

Any more ideas out there before I give up and call this a bad idea buying this in the first place???

Just to be sure you dont even get to the main menu (new game load game etc). It crashed before that?
You might try verifying the game cache. Worth a shot.

What do you mean by "not required at this time"? Are you using a program to update your drivers? Or are you going directly to ASUS?
It looks to me like your using alot of defualt windows drivers.
ALso are you using onboard sound or a soundcard?

Yeah i am pretty much having the same problem, tried fresh install and everything. It worked for the first 2 weeks fine. Any help would be great

You are correct in saying that I don't even get to the main menu screen, it crashes usually about the point that it goes from the first legal screen splash page onto the Bethesda spalsh screen, before the intro video I believe (not having ever seen it yet!)

My driver are all up to date with the latest that are available on the ASUS website.

Games has been re-verified a few times over the past few days whilst I've attempting to get this working.

I'm using the onbaord sound (soundmax).

Is there a progam out there that I would be better placed using to update my driver if this will help rather than the default windows drivers??


One day this game may run - although I'm starting to lose faith with it a bit now - but more than willing to try any ideas people have!!!

A few things you might try:
1) go into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\Data\Music\Special
and play the MainTitle sound file. Does it play?

2) also have you tried playing the game in offline mode? Steam drop down menu and select go offline

I've tried both things and yes the music plays fine. IN offline mode the crash occurs exactly the same as in online i'm afraid!!!

try calling up steam
goto library
in the upper left hand corner, right click on Fallout New Vegas and select properties
goto Local Files
click on "verify integrity of Game Cache"

Are you constantly having to re-verify games? Are your other games working well (steam games or non-steam)?

No problems with verification. Game is fine in this respect.

All non steam and steam games are fine, this is really about the first game i've ever had any major issues with installing anf gettting to play - typical I suppose had a good run for to long!

I've tried rn'installing 2008 runtimes as you mentioned - guess what though?> No change - same crash in same place!!

Go into nvidia control panel and click on adjust image setting with preview on the left panel. Then select let 3d application decide (may already be there).

ALso have you tried compatibility modes? C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas right click falloutnv.exe and select compatibility tab.
Click the check box and try windos xp service pack 3
