Crashes after 50 hours in-game

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:29 am

Hello everyone. I've got problem with latest Fallout game. I've played this game about 50 hours, there have been few crashes to desktop - nothing special. But 2 days ago i've had problem that i could not play anymore. It has started in that way - at first, i travelled to nellis airforce base. After that, i've had many freezes (everyone for 5-8 seconds) and hangar's textures have got terrible quality. I've restarted fallout, thinking that will solve my problem. Of course, problem dissapeared, but it seems there's another one - everytime i'm playing F:NV i've got crash to deskopt - in 1,2,5 minutes playing. That problem appear at every save and every location. I tried to reinstall steam, graphic card drivers, reinstall the whole game and tried to do that one:
""Do these steps:

1. Click Start | Documents.
2. Double click: My Games | FalloutNV
3. Open a file named fallout.ini
4. Look for the string named bUseThreadedAI=0
5. Replace 0 with 1
6. Insert an another line beneath the above, iNumHWThreads=2
7. Save the changes you have made and close the file. [Press Ctrl + S to save.]
8. Click Start | Computer.
9. Double click: C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout New Vegas, assuming C be the installation directory.
10. Double click the file named fallout_default.ini
11. Do the steps 4 to 7 above.""

Nothing solved my problem. Any ideas what i have to do now?

System specification - windows xp sp3, athlon xp 6400, 4gb ram, ATI 4870, sound blaster audigy.

In Event Log there's application error which has got number 0x0007796f.

PS. Sorry for my bad english :)

I will keep watching this thread as I am experiencing the same problem. My computer just came out of the shop after the video card died....NVIDIA 9800GT, they replaced it under warranty but now it crashes right after the opening screen...54 hours in.

Very similar problem here, except the game crashes whenever combat is initiated. It was working for the past 60 hours I have played the game, so I have no idea whats causing this.

Hello,

I think I have a similar problem to what you are explaining.

I experienced this in both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. With Fallout 3, it seemed to occur at random, where the game would stop responding, return to desktop, a report message stating that Fallout 3 is no longer responding, and, usually, I can not interact with teh message, have to CRTL+ALT+DLT, return to desktop, then I have ability to interact with the message again. Oh, I have Windows: Vista (32-bit).

With Fallout: New Vegas (on the same computer and all), I did not experience this problem until late in the game. What I anolyzed and concluded is the following:

- farther in the game (if you often create new save files), more save files pile up, as with their individual memories (farther into the game results in larger save files)
- that being said, it could also be that even if you do not create new save files, the larger save files alone might cause the following
- when a certain point is reached (it seems to be approximately 100 save files, 1 being the beginning of the game [low save file memory] to 100, being near the end [high save file memory], or about 30 with near end game files alone), the game begins to start crashing
- I have theorized that the save files, as I have talked about, cause this
- I experimented by removing the majority of my save files (moving them onto an external hard drive), and leaving only a few in the proper folder, resulting in only those being accessed by the game
- the results were good: the game stopped crashing (this is for New Vegas -- I have not tried for Fallout 3)
- but, once I start making more files, and these files were large size due to my position in the game, the crashes started again

So, I would try that (it is what I am doing).

Although, I also have experienced one or two consistent crashes in specific areas and events (The Fort after interacting with the traveling merchant there).

To do what I did, go to where your saved files are located. If Vista, probably in My Documents/My Games/FalloutNV/Saves.

Select only the files you do not need anymore. I would recommend keeping them, such as moving them to another folder, simply. Only keep a few files, or one, that you need to continue (the most recent, maybe). Or just delete the ones you don't want.

Make sure you DO NOT delete the two autosave files.

Marlinspade & EducatedIdiot - nice to hear that im not alone with that kind of problem. I observed that i can travel through the wasteland, but i cannot fight - everytime i started the fight, i've got crash while fighting or few seconds after that...

5hassay - i've tried your solution - I left only last save and two autosave files in save folder, and.... there are still crashes :/

Edit - last save has got number 290.

Do you use mods? Does it crash with a new game?
What is the exception code with the crash?

Wow it seems that the way to solve problem which 5hassay has described really works! I've started to play after 2 days without using STEAM and the crashes are not so often.

Hey guys
Well same problem as you for me, around 43 hours of games, cant load anymore my last savegame.
However i did noticed a few things.
i can reload older saves, and the problem seems to be that if my savegame file is bigger than 5450 Ko then i cant load it.
That will be nice if people here on this thread could check the size of their save files to see if it is actually related.
But that would make sense and explain why it is working when you start a new game or why the problem seems to be happening aroud 50 hours of playtime.
Who know , maybe that could use the devs to fix the problem.
(i wish i knew a way to change the size of my savegame, that would be possibly a easy way to save the problem.)

the problem is link to that or some event that happens in the game after a certain amount of time. FYI my last savegame is when i enter in the BOS bunker for the first time, and i didn't talk to Mr house yet.

ps.: about the devs or the guys from obsidian, a word here to say that you re working on the problem or at least checking the forum would be nice.
if you don't then go root to hell.
edit: i really dont think either that the problem is link to steam or any DLC btw

My current savegame is #236 at 300+ hours playtime and is 9048Kb is size. I am just now doing the "For the Republic #2" quest, I have tried to do all the sidequests first so it has taken a while.

I zip up my savegames after I get about 30..50 of them to lower the number of savegames in the folder and to save space. Zipped the savegames take less than 9% of the space.

I do not think the number of savegames in the folder leads to any kind of game malfunction. When the load screen displays only the pictures in the savegames are read, not the whole savegame. That cannot lead to crashes.

The only good reason a savegame could cause an immediate crash when loaded is if it were somehow corrupted. It's remotely possible that if your computer was really low on available free memory that an especially large savegame might cause a crash when loaded. I don't think this happens because my FNV takes only 800..900Mb when loaded and does not significantly increase memory used when a savegame is loaded.

I now have VERY frequent crashing (making the game almost unplayable), I have had frequent random crashing since about 100 hours of playtime. It is my theory that as you accumulate things done and places visited the game engine becomes overwhelmed with the volume of accumulated data that needs to be managed. Too much data and the game engine starts crashing, it's just that simple.

I almost never have a crash in interiors (that have limited spaces and limited data) but when trying to walk anywhere in the exterior world I will get a crash every 1 to 10 minutes. These are random unrepeatable crashes not related to any particular place, when a last save is reloaded I never get the same crash at the same place so I'm sure the crashes are really just random.

I no longer walk anywhere where it is not strictly necessary, I now strictly use fast travel because I WILL get a crash if I try to walk anywhere farther than the length of a football field. It's very sad because I would prefer never to use fast travel, but otherwise the game is unplayable. At this point I'm just trying to finish the game then (sadly) I will NEVER run it again. I never had this kind of trouble with Fallout 3.

Guys, have you tried to do that 5hassay say to do? Your problem is very similiar to mine, and i dont have problem anymore, so i trust that this is caused by too many saves in save folder. Try it and post what happened then.

@edit - one more word from me - after using this method the game still count saves as there are all of them (for example - there were 5 left and game still counted new saves as #300, #301, #302 etc - this same numbers were in save folder), but after 2 days when i wasnt playing NV - game "switched" and count new save as #6, #7, #8 etc - today i've got #57 in-game, but its number....361 in save folder.

Strange problem, isnt it?

Well it doesnt work for me. iam actually at a point where i am inside of one of the vault, and i can do any saves i want, as long as i dont zone to a new area.
If i do so, then every new save will be corrupted.
Sadly there is still no official answer about that problem.
