Crashes after 'Play' on Splash screen, please help.

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 4:35 am

I can get to the Splash screen, but when I hit 'Play' on the splash screen the game immediately crashes. My attempts to fix:

- disabled 'Steam Community In-Game' and 'Steam Cloud synchronization
- verified the integrity of my game cache repeatedly (I get the repetitive '1 files failed to verify' response which I read is a 'false positive'?)
- reinstalled the game twice and ensured the cache files are defragged.
- tried the "add ded9.dll to the FNV file" and about a half dozen other fixes recommended from Fallout3, etc. (I've since removed the file since it didn't fix the problem.)
- ensured Kaspersky Antivirus is turned off prior to launch and have windows User Account Access disabled.
- disabled and enabled the caravan pack .esm
- tried every video setting combination under options.

DxDiag details in the spoiler. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

C'mon, man. Did you read the details above? I haven't played a Steam game in years and this is my first Fallout PC game, so I admit I'm behind the power curve WRT the rest of the forum readers. I'm not techy enough to interpret the dxdiag. I DID, however, plow through the 100+ pages of threads but I haven't found a solution that has worked. Compared to ones I've seen I've done a lot more before posting. If you don't want to help, fine, but don't blow this off as spam.

All the steps your gonna need to do and I know this will work.

Part 1.
1) Start by reinstalling Fallout; New Vegas and clear all cache.
2) Allow updating of Fallout; New Vegas and restart your computer.
3) Check if the problem is resolved if not go onto part 2.

Part 2.
1) Open up steam and right click on "Fallout; New Vegas" and select "properties"
2) Open up the tab "LOCAL FILES" and click "VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE"
3) When finished, Check if problem is resolved if not go onto part 3.

Part 3.
1) Open up the following to get into your steam apps, Start off by opening any folder and typing C:\
2) Open up program files ( program files (x86) for some users) -> Steam -> steamapps -> common -> fallout new vegas.
3) Download both the files and make a new folder 1 and another called new folder 2.
4) Extract the files and place one of them both into the new folders and make sure they are separated.
5) Place the 1st folder's file into the main fallout new vegas file and restart computer and see if it worked.
6) If not try the 2nd folder, Restart computer and enjoy.

Downloads.
1)http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/download.php?id=68581
2)http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/download.php?id=69983

This WILL fix intro crashes and loading crashes.
If this didn't resolve it your computer is to blame most likely.

Thanks, man, for helping me out on this! I really did try searching out all the keywords that I thought were relevant to this problem. I registered for this forum literally this morning and spent ~ 6 hours attempting various fixes, but the situations didn't quite match mine (most were on XP or W7, and included some length of gameplay or intro before crashing). I appreciate the help and will reevaluate what I need to do to be more successful when searching the forums.

Bobsbees - I ran through all your steps, but the situation persists - it still crashes as soon as I hit Play on the Splash screen.

I'm at a loss regarding how to proceed. Everything thing I've read or program I've ran indicates my computer's performance exceeds the game's requirements. Are there any services that offer live tech support for these types of issues?

Does anybody else have any suggestions? Does Bethesda offer refunds if it absolutely won't run?

You should be able to get a refund if you have the recipe to the store you bought it from.

If the store ask's you if you used the keygen and they can't say the game does not work and you used all the support options and it didn't become fixed.

This is the last thing i could find to help you.
1. Load the "fallout.ini" and "fallout_default.ini" (be sure to set both to NOT Read-Only and make backups of both files)
2. Locate SMainMenuMovieIntro= and delete the following lines:
SMainMenuMovieIntro=
SIntroSequence=
sIntroMovie=Fallout INTRO Vsk.bik

3. Save the files, then locate Fallout INTRO Vsk.bik and rename it to whatever you want (i.e. Fallout INTRO Vsk.bik BAK)

I'm struggling with the exact same problem. bobsbees' suggested fixes either didn't help or allowed me to launch the game once only to crash it within a minute or two of launch and revert to the consistent crash.

I doubt you'll get a refund for a PC game. Check your receipt and look for refund policies. So just to be clear you arent even getting into the game? No intro videos just a crash after you click play?
What is the error message?

Have you tried downloading the latest run-times?
vc2008 run-time sp1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2&displaylang=en

From the dxdiag you need to update your video card drivers. Make sure to run the installation program "as admin" by right clicking.
Perform a clean install (there is a checkbox marked clean-install in the installation wizard).

You also should try a clean-boot (you dont look like you have too many background stuff buts you never know).

I appreciate the feedback. I'll give the runtime issue a try. As for the video drivers, I did a clean install using nVidia's driver update program yesterday. The Oct2010 drivers were loaded by the program. Is there another way?

Also, I'm a little wary about personally updating some of the system device drivers (such as the ATK0110 ACPI UTILITY). I've always just let Microsoft search for a better driver. Is this a poor approach?

Go to nvidia's website and download them from there. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Then run the installation program "as admin" by right clicking it. During the installation wizard there should be a check box labeled clean install.
Your computer will reboot and then install the new drivers. Its worth a try anyway.

Your best bet for system drivers is going to your motherboard manufacturer's website and searching for updated drivers there (although these drivers arent always the latest either).
I would try there for system drivers and while your at it you could also verify your soundcard drivers (should also be on MB manu website if your using onbaord).

Dont forget the clean boot option as there may be a background program o rservice causing the issue.

Are you able to get into the game at all or is it just crashing after you click play? Can you give some more info about the crash? What is the error message? You can check event viewer.

You might also try compatibility mode options.

I have not yet gotten the game to play anything - no intro videos, no credits, nothing. As soon as I hit "Play" it crashes. I'll try the drivers and running the game from a clean boot.

In the meantime, here's the eventlog stuff:

Ok, tried to update all my drivers, including the BIOS (which is a little unnerving). Everything looks up-to-date as best I can tell. Clean reboot and trimming down extra processes seems to have no effect. I also tried compatibility mode. The only compatibility mode available for that program is XP SP2, not SP3 like a lot of threads had indicated. This also had no effect.

Your sound card driver is more than 3 years old. Maybe now would be the time to update it? ;)

I have the same problem as well.
I can only run the game with the d3d9.dll, even after the new patch
It svcks having a GTX465, and the game seeing it as a 7900GS
Tried everything. My next step is to format my hard drive.

I have been using the first .dll file http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34778
make sure you paste it into C:program files/steam/SteamApps/common/fallout new vegas

Sound card driver updated, still no change. Does the fact that it doesn't even start help narrow down any other culprits?

Heres a few other things you can try:

update the run-times (worth a try)
vc2008 run-time sp1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2&displaylang=en

Update directX from microsoft's website.

If you havent tried this (make sure to read the instructions carefully):
Reset directshow filter use:
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35868

If you are still getting the 0xc0000005 exception crash (this has helped a few people):
Debug:
There is something you can try. You can download a program called debugdiag (from microsoft) and catch the crash. The program will create a memory dump and you can anolyze
this for issues.

Link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=28bd5941-c458-46f1-b24d-f60151d875a3&displaylang=en

Download debugdiag.msi (not the x64 version). You may have to go to the install directory to execute the right program. The anolyze only shortcut is installed in the program directory
but not the debugdiag.exe. C:\Program Files (x86)\DebugDiag <-- It should be debugdiag.exe

Its not too hard to get a crash dump from here. Install the program "as admin" by right clicking. Then run it again "as admin".
If the wizard (select rule type) pops up, you want to run fallout 3 nv before proceeding. Afterwards, select crash->a specific process->FalloutNV.exe.

--(only do this if your getting the c0000005 exception when you crash) you probably are
On the next wizard screen you want to select exceptions at the bottom. On the first chance exception screen select add exception.
Find c0000005 (access violation) and select mini-userdump from the action type drop-down menu (you can return to this step and create a full-dump if the mini-dump doesnt seem to show anything).
--

Click OK and finish out the wizard.
You should see your rule listed in the rules tab. The status should e active and the userdump count 0. Simply go into the game and get it to crash.
After the crash the userdump count should be set to 1. A minidump file is created jsut follow the path listed under user dump.
The mini-dump should be a small file (~200 KB more or less).

DirectShow filters reset program does not install correctly. I believe this is because I'm running a VISTA computer. The instructions indicate XP and Windows 7 are only supported. Thhis is what I get in the MSDOS screen everytime I try to install it:

The filter program should work on windows vista. You dont seem to have that many codecs on your system anyway.
You running everything "as admin" correct? I mean your not trying to install everything on a limited user account. You should
right click all installation files and run "as admin".

have you run chkdsk /f on your drive?

The debugdiag doesnt tell me much other than its fallout 3 nv (not sure if you posted the complete contents of the report). It was worth a try. You can try a full dump instead of a mini-dump.
Just select full from the drop down box. Refer to my previosu instructions if you dont remember
Make sure you allow the anolysis activeX in internet explorer if you get a prompt for allowing an activeX control at the top.

Are you installing new vegas from a dvd? I might suggest you completely remove fallout 3 new vegas (the folder and everything) and reinstall from steam online.

Try running this also in a cmd window (run as admin) : sfc /scannow

Are you able to play any other games on this system? Are you having application problems elsewhere or is fallout 3 nv the only app?

Heres bethesdas contact info if you want to go that way:
