Crashing since 1.3.1

I'm not sure if it's just me, but since the "LAA" patch, I've been getting abnormal CTDs, and purple textures showing up. I'm not sure what changed. I was stricken with a nasty virus a couple weeks back and I had to completely reformat my HDD. This meant having to re-install skyrim, and unfortunately it meant I had to fully update the game. My game ran completely stable at 1.2, no issues whatsoever. I was able to log several hours straight, and come back the next day to do the same with nothing abnormal occuring. After a fresh install, all of the issues that I've seen that other people have, I am now stricken with. Low game sound, the purple textures of course, which is rare, and 2-7 second outdoor hiccups.

I've tried various fixes that I've found on this forum to remedy certain issues, and I was able to overcome some of the plagues. The CTD issue, however, I have not been able to figure out. I've tried various video and sound drivers, tinkered with different settings in the nvidia console, all to no avail.

Perhaps it's related to a faulty .exe? I have never run a 64bit OS, as 32bit was always satisfactory for me. Hopefully someone can help me track down what I changed to create this issue.

You need more system RAM and VRAM. Bringing your system RAM up to 4gb should help some but your video card only has half a gig VRAM (plus 1.5 gig shared system RAM) and you can't change that. The 9800 gt was experiencing these same problems with games three years ago -

I guess you were playing alright before since the game only used 2gb, leaving just enough RAM for your GPU, then but since the latest patch enables LAA of up to 4gb for the game now there simply isn't enough available RAM for both the game and your shared 1.5gb system RAM needed for your vid card (not to mention background programs and processes.)

So there is that any other derp comments? Also did they patch the system requirements on the gamebox post patch 1.3 with Illusion magic? If the game worked for the guy at release and they patched him out of being able to play the game and that isn't ridiculous.....what in your mind is?
But nah OP buy some new hardware to play Skryim or be forced to play an old version forever....that sounds fair.

Lets nitpick because these are the best forums ever as far as UI....He tried it failed and he didn't preview post we can't all be Master 5,989 posts(6000 by the time I finish here most likely). Actually bad forum UI bad game UI....a pattern has been detected. Regardless since he didn't use spoiler tags and you had to do all that work to scroll down we shouldn't help the OP....he needs to get his forum weight up amirite?

To the OP: If you have the system requirements to play the game and clearly you do since you were and a patch made you unable I would call Bethesda and demand a refund. I would also make sure they knew how ridiculous this is. I wish I had a solution that allowed you to play the game but I won't tell you to buy new hardware out of principle and I don't know any fancy way to make the game work on your system like it did prior to the "OfficiFAIL LAA" patch.....that you can't avoid unless you want to run steam in a mode that is not even default or ya know play other games or use steam online or get a patch.

As I said before, the game ran flawlessly before I had to reformat. I ran at med-high settings, and everything was absolutely beautiful.
The purple textures I seemed to have fixed, but I still can't get rid of the CTDs, with no error message. With some tinkering, I managed to get the perfomance back to the way I had remembered it a few weeks ago. There's still some framerate choppiness, but it's unexplainable. Why, with a new patch, am I forced to run a 64bit program, as I'm lead to believe that the .exe is now, when I only have a 32bit operating system? It's all very shady, and I wish I could just roll my client back to 1.2, but alas I can't play the game stock, because of this ridiculous DRM deal beth has with steam.

EDIT: I have had no issues whatsoever with my 9800GT. It runs like a dream for me. I never expected to run this game on ultra, nor do I have the disposable income to run out and buy brand new parts to bring my rig "up to speed". I do however, expect to run the game with no issues, considering I am WELL above the system requirements. I ran perfectly with most settings at medium, with a few choice settings at high, or very high. Not a peep from my system. Lo and behold, this new LAA patch put a stopper in the gears and I've done nothing but struggle to find out what broke, because there is no error reporting from the game client.

EDIT2: I actually have 4GB ram, but my 32bit operating system will only see 3.2GB.

That you posted...lets take a look at that.

Open up "Task Manager" how much RAM is in use when sitting Idle? with Your browser open? Gonna take a guess here and say about 1.2 - 1.5 gig gone?

Now give the Original Game its MAX would have been 1.8 GIG (2 gig).
Lets not forget that every video card gets 256 meg off the Top in the BIOS.

Now can you see why you are getting Purple textures? And the need to have a OS that will Give you your 4 gigs RAM?
1.5 + 1.8 + 256 meg = more then the 3.2 you have. So what are your Numbers ?

Being low or out of RAM will give you a crash.

While I appreciate the help, RAM, or lack thereof simply isn't my problem. The problem comes from the new patch and the new patch alone. Something was changed that I can't figure out. 1.3, everything was fine. 1.3.1, CTDs, the occasional purple texture, very low game sound, and now I get no sounds other than ambience in third person mode. The CTDs are accompanied by no warnings, or error messages. They behave much like if I had pressed alt-f4.

EDIT: FYI, sitting idle, it teeters between 900MB-1GB of RAM usage. Again, it's not a CPU nor is it a RAM issue. There's something going on within the client itself causing these issues, and I see that I am not alone.
There seems also, to be some "glow" in-game. Pre 1.3.1, the game was rendered quite beautifully, but now, it's almost like everything is hazy.. if that describes it correctly.

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (Skyrim)

Not sure what it means. This event pops up every time I encounter an error-less CTD.

Does Vista have a UAC like Win7? IF so try disabling it....sorry I don't and have never owned a system with vista so that is the best suggestion I can offer other than run the TESV.exe and the launcher(not sure which) as admin. Disable steam overlay and communication.

Never had an issue with user accounts, I'm the only user of this PC, so as a result, I'm the admin. I'm going to try the geforce 290.53 driver, and see what it fixes versus breaking.

I've been crashing to desktop instantly much more frequently since the 1.3.1 patch.

Traveling outdoors after loading a city for example, will usualy result in a crash walking in any direction for about 10 minutes.

I am useing a 32bit copy of vista, with 4GB of memory, my 4870x2 takes up 1gig of that. So i'm left with less then 2GB for skyrim when accounting for background programs and such.

I have no idea how or even if the LAA patch effected me, but if it did in some way. I can definately see how it can be accounting for these new crashes. Usualy purple placeholder textures will show up before a CTD is near. This would only happen before after playing for several hours. And I might note, I ran skyrim VERY stable for 180+ hours of gameplay. CTDs were a rareity.

Of course I would like to upgrade to 64bit and get even more memory. But this is not really an option at present. I've sinced uninstalled all my texture mods, in an effort to reduce memory. Which may have had a small effect. Pretty much done playing Skyrim for a while though untill the CK is out and I can start a new file.

One thing I have not done is tested to see if these CTD bugs are effecting new games. As my first file grew in size, it did seem as though I gradualy began to crash more and more often.

Geforce 290.53 drivers did nothing to remedy the CTDs. Everything else, however, has been fixed. Now if only gamesas would chime in and tell us wtf is going on, and perhaps minipatch an error reporter so we can figure this [censored] out.

Yep. And hard freezes. And using windowed mode to play all over again.

But an error reporter would show you how jacked the game is....which is why there is none. They are inept but not stupid.

Stupidity is not even acknowledging the issue. More and more, I'm reading that people are stuck not even able to play the game because it just drops back to the desktop within minutes of getting into the game. Really stupid that we can't even find out why it's doing it, so we can fix it. I'm not sure if it's even the client doing it, because I had optimized my OS with so many changes, when I had to reformat, I had forgotten everything I had done. at v1.3, I ran the game flawlessly. Reformat+reinstall and reluctantly patched up to 1.3.1, now I'm sitting with constant CTDs.
