Creepy Stories vs. Creepy Pictures

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 7:32 am

Please bear with me, the post is going to be long-ish and will explain several things. PLEASE DO NOT VOTE WITHOUT READING THE POST, AND DO NOT READ BEYOND THE FIRST POST UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE VOTED

So I've decided I want to know how scary/creepy stories fare versus scary/creepy pictures. I've thought about how to process this for a while and have finally decided upon a format and fashion in which to do it, but for the resulting statistics to be accurate, I need your guys' honest participation.

Lower in the post I will have a link to a story and a picture that is supposed to depict something from the story, though I decided I wanted them to not be too shocking scary as to promote participation (Not to mention that kind of scary is just mean). I want you to choose to click JUST ONE. When you have done so, evaluate how creepy you think it is, and then vote appropriately. After you have done so, feel free to view the other, but not until AFTER you have voted!

VOTING INFORMATION
The voting is spread into four chunks, two for the story-readers and two for the picture-viewers. Each section for each type of subject is divided again; One for those whom've had some previous encounter with their particular picture/story and those who have not.
EDIT:I have decided to not worry about any previous encounters with the story or the pictures; it's more data to sift through and variables than are necessary.

Within the voting there is a scale of 1-5, and they are as such:
  • Not creepy/scary at all
  • Somewhat creepy/scary
  • Moderately creepy/scary
  • Very creepy/scary
  • Extremely creepy/scary (Truly terrifying)

Along with these, there's an N/A. Choose this for the one you didn't look at!

And finally, I ask that you are as honest and truthful as you can be in your voting; nobody can see your votes. Feel free to discuss the story/picture/procedure etc. in the topic below. EDIT: Please do, actually, to ensure that this stays on the first page and people see it! If there is any confusion or questions, please PM me here or on Steam and I'll do my absolute best to help.

EDIT: Please remember to only look at and vote for one!

Thank you in advance for participating, those of you who do, I really appreciate it.

Just as an additional precaution, I decided to write the post in spoiler tags in case someone dodges the filler. :P

Spoiler
I find that the picture is slightly creepy, but only after reading the story, which I shall admit I found a bit scary. My heart rate definitely increased while reading, however, it's 2 AM and I'm sitting in the dark by myself about to sleep, so that might contribute to it. Before reading when I viewed the picture however, I did not find it creepy at all.

Edit: Okay, I got it completely wrong and looked at both.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhuB9wKlqEA&feature=player_embedded&t=07m30s Although it's not very scary.

I'm not really qualified to vote (so I didn't), since I saw both the picture and read the story long before this topic. And because I'm generally immune to the horror genre in general, neither frightened me then either, though if you must know, I found the picture creepier.

I read the story and didn't find it very scary. I gave it a 2.

The picture isn't very scary at all.

Also, I can't vote. I think your poll is haunted.

Uh, try voting now. If it doesn't work I'll PM a moderator and see if they can help.

I'm more worried about having them both in recent memory (As one could potentially enhance the creepiness or the such of the other.) Obviously looking at both right now makes a vote null. :P

Edit: I also noticed that the ratings and N/As don't match up. Really guys, please only vote for the story OR the picture. :sadvaultboy:

Well, I accidentally clicked the picture without reading through the whole post, but I did finish reading it when I came back, so this is my review of that picture (I have not read the story yet):

It gets a two. It doesn't instill any significant fear in me and I didn't recoil when it loaded. It does, however, give me a slight feeling of anxiety. It's more of creepy sensation, and even then it's not so powerful. In this regard, though, it's more effective than the vast majority of supposedly "creepy" images on the internet (excluding shock site images).

Now, I'm going to read the story and I'll tell you what I think of that. I already voted N/A for it, so no harm done.

Well, that was fast. I recognized the story almost immediately, as I've read it before. I've even watched a lot of the EverymanHYBRID series on Youtube, which covers things like Habit, the Rake, and Slenderman. I find the Rake the least frightening of the three, so the story itself did nothing for me. If I were to vote, it'd get a one.

I'm going insane as I watch this poll because the votes aren't matching up....

Guys, please. Only vote for one, and then choose N/A on the other. If you don't my statistics become invalidated and null :pinch:

Heh, I ended up settling on the two simply because they were related. I originally wanted to do the NoEnd House for the story, because I love it as a story, but I was worried that, with its extremely long length, it would bore people and they would vote consistent 1s. http://www.creepypastaindex.com/creepypasta/noend-house

Just read that one. It was most definitely better than the story of choice in the OP. Much longer, yes, but I think it's one of those stories that really hooks you in until you finish it, so I doubt boredom would become an issue.

I'll rate it as well, for the fun of it: It gets a three on the scary scale. The first several rooms were very nice, but it started to get a little too...silly by room 6. It never got any worse than that, but I felt it was trying too hard to be scary by that point (Especially room 8). Overall, though, it was good. Saw the ending coming a mile away, but I got a chuckle out of it regardless.

Ok, after i deciphered the ass backward first post, I voted 2 for the story.

to be honest, after seeing the picture, years of videogames have made naked guys with sword hands a bit passe. Looks like a Voldo concept.

Agreed. The media has gone a long way into desensitizing many people of the things they may have feared in the past, so simply showing me a picture of some pale demonic monster is going to incite "Awesome" from me, not "Oh god, close it, close it, close it!".

Certain images do genuinely frighten me though, but they're less obvious in their presentation. Pictures of dark hallways, looking down into a pitch black basemant, seeing a partially visible image in a mirror or through glass, etc. It's those mystifying, unknown things that creep me out, not the "Ooooh, I'm a scary monster" things.

you are a scary monster

I disagree with media desensitizing (if by media you mean video games, if you mean television and internet then sure I agree) people though, I think people desensitize people.

After reading the story, I expected to see some photoshopped abomination that would give me at least a somewhat eerie depiction of what I was brewing up in my head.

Sadly, it was concept art, and a very abstract one if I might add.

ie. http://nbcoutofbounds.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/creaturehires.jpg might have been more appropriate.

All in all though. Hairless dogs aren't appropriate.

The picture wan't very scary unless I actually saw it, and same with the story. If I saw the creature and had him in my room, then I would be a little more freaked out.
