Crossbow Smithing. Light or Heavy?

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 2:13 am

So yeah I'm making another build(hopefully I'll stick with this one), and I'm deciding to focus on Archery mostly because its the most fun to me, and I want to use crossbows.

I'll be putting points in smithing as well, but I'm wondering.. Do you think Crossbow Smithing will be on the Light side, Heavy side, or both? My character will be wearing light armor, but I'll be wearing Dawnguard light armor which probably won't need any perks to improve,

But this Crossbow Smithing thing is kind of confusing me, I think I may go with Heavy because I can't see there being a Glass Crossbow in game.

Anyone have any opinions? I'm kind of lost here.

Well we don't know, in morrowind we had two types crossbows Dwemer and steel. Dawnguard may have more say dragonbone.

All I know is my gut says 'maybe'.

Just joshing you.
Personally I think 'heavy' is the most likely way to go.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking as well. It wouldn't be so bad if the highest rank Crossbow was Dwemer(which may be the case. I can't see Daedra making crossbows), but I'm unsure. I may just bite the bullet(bolt), put a point in Dwemer smithing, and hope for the best.

And if they do have Dragon Bone Crossbows I'm set up for that.

Yeah, it just makes the most logical sense. But I'm kind of afraid to gimp myself on armor, and I have no interest in wearing the heavy stuff.

Maybe I won't need the leather armor boosts?

I highly doubt we'll see glass or elven crossbows. I would put my perks on the heavy side.

I'm going to think Heavy, but then again, it may not have a weight class, like a normal bow does. They could have a cross bow for each rank of Smithing, or have one standard one they give you in the DLC.

My suggestion? Save up some of your perks, just in case. If you need them, then you have them to use on the Heavy Armor perks. if not... well, you have about five extra perks to spend on things!

Sound reasoning. I think I'll do that.

Edit: Screw it, I'm just going to go up the Heavy Armor tree to Dragonbone, and wear Dragonscale armor. Hopefully the Dawnguard armor doesn't need a perk for improvement. Thanks for the help everyone.

In an E3 vid with Matt Carofano he said later on you come across a Dwemer crossbow which is more powerful [than initial/ starting crossbows]. The way he said it made me think crossbows were something you find and not smith (all speculation on my part). He also didnt mention them at the same point as smithing dragonbone weapons....

There were steel bolts... I know that, I would assume it would be both maybe but Daedric ( if it goes that high) would be the most powerful as per bows.

Guys I watched the E3 gampelay with the crossbow and looking at the amount of damage it did to the giants the player was fighting I'm going to assume it has one standard level as if you imagine the damage increase from standard to say Daedric or Dragonbone, you'd be practically felling Giants in one shot lol

Idk I saw a vid with mr. Howard in it and he said during the interview that bolts were able to be crafted. Not an exact quote but that's pretty much it. Here's to hoping that arrows are craftable now. (cheers)

Heavy, I think.

We've already seen the steel crossbow, and they've briefly mentioned a dwarven one. If we're lucky, this talk of dragonbone weapons'll also include a dragonbone crossbow. Those are both considered heavy, so it'd probably be safer to go with heavy armour over light. Although, I think it's quite likely that we'll get them for both sides. It'd be a real shame if we didn't.

right i would say its more of a heavy type of wepon because i could see a daedric cross bow BUT even though this might be true i could aslo see a limited ammount of types of cross bows

also a little off topic BUT cross bows could possibly start a new perk tree diffrent from archery just saying.

Todd said Dragonbone is going to be stronger than Daedric. Can't wait

Crossbows are more of a Warrior sidearm than an Archer weapon so go with Heavy i suppose unless of course you have a particular build in mind. Then again my Slayer/WitchHunter will be using a Crossbow and he is Light. But if you mean the weapon itself, i would guess heavy since Dwemer came up with the weapon itself

I've had my smithing skill tree go all heavy armor and then from dragon armor to the light armors. It goes from highest heavy armor to highest light armor, basically.

It's been confirmed more times than I can count that crossbows use the Archery tree, just like normal bows.
Edit:Ah well, Drake Malice beat me to it.

Also, I am fervently hoping for elven crossbows. Glass too, all of the elven/glass weapons are so pretty.

I'm hoping the dwarvern crossbow is the highest level crossbow. It's going to be the most advanced at least.

I couldn't see elves using crossbows personally. Their too graceful and light to be using a mechanical weapon like a crossbows.

It would be cool if we could have different types of crossbows like a light 1h crossbow, arbalesters and siege crossbows.
