CTD+Disables Direct X + PC Freeze

Post » Thu Feb 17, 2011 12:12 am

so I've played throu the game now, I did every single quest, visited every location on the map and found every unique weapon so I guess that makes it a good amount of time played... lets say 50~ hours w/o a crash or any problems.

Anyway, shortly before the few last remaining endgame-quests the game started to crash and crash again.. so this is what happens:
1.) I play, 30min up to like 2hours max and then CTD.

2.) I'll open it again, and keep playing - then usualy after 5min it crashes again but now I cannot play any other games anymore.
For example: I try to run WC3 TFT - it says directX could not be initialized & it cant find the cd while CoD MW2 just crashes at the loading screen after it found a game... BUT I can still launch & shortly play Fallout New Vegas
sometimes it even just cuts number 2.) and goes to 3.) directly. rarely though.

3.) I play Fallout: NV but only around 1 - 2min cus after this my PC finaly freezes up and I have to hard reboot, sometimes in the game itself sometimes after a CTD.

if I play a different game or do something else then reopening Fallout NV after my first CTD, I start at 1.) again, so this is kind of a "fix" even tho it appears that fallout crashes more often after closly 30min again.
Also if I restart my PC after my first CTD or before it freezes I start at 1.) again aswell.

I allready tryed every soultion I found in google (from simple .ini edits up to mods for the game or gamefiles itself) formated my PC, re-installed the game aswell obviously, played it 100% vanilla, updated my drivers, Yes, the game has the latest patch ofc.., Also I tryed to play it with patch1 only, patch 2 only..
I even started a entirely new game w/o keeping any old savegames.
But nothing did help...
and neither did I found any equaly kind of problem on any forum so I though I turn here and ask if somebody happens to know abouth this or perhaps even knows a fix?

since the GPU shows as 4800series, its a EAH 4890 HD - OC Model

Might not be the issue if it only happens in Fallout New Vegas, but the 4850 OC cards have been known to have overheating issues and have been reported to produce distortion and white artifacts shortly before causing crashes. Also- do you use stock catalyst drivers and control center or do you have to use a utility from the card munfacturer?

If it is overheating then I can't think of why it would only be an issue in Fallout New Vegas because it should not be producing more load on the card than some of your other games - except in the form of inefficiencies in the game engine. You could probably rule this out though by running a diagnostics tool like GPU-Z (found on softsea.com). The only reason I am tempted to suggest hardware problems is because of the kind of crashes you are describing. Normally when a directx game crashes in vista or windows 7 (and with later versions of Catalyst Control Center or nVidia drivers in XP) the card is reset and the system recovers after returning to the desktop. That's actually what the feature "GPU recover" was added to the xp version of catalyst was intended to do - and this is no longer needed in Vista and Windows 7 as the OS is supposed to handle that task.

Since you are using XP though- if you do not use the catalyst control center then you may not have the "recover" feature which would help at least mitigate the frustration these crashes cause you. I normally don't argue with someone's desire to run their system as lean as possible by installing only the drivers and avoiding the proprietary utilities, but in this case the catalyst control center may actually be helpful rather than just bloatware. I mean it's not like those damnable logitech or consumer-printer-brand utilities which can serve more of an adware function sometimes than do anything helpful (before any logitech fans go for my jugular please note the heavy use of qualifiers in that statement.)

The fact that this appears not to be working and that directx is rendered unavailible for other games until you perform a hard reboot leads me to believe that the graphics card is not able to recover from whatever error is happening. It's not particularly easy for this to be caused by the game itself or any game for that matter but could be caused by the drivers or by hardware damage. If you can install newer ATI drivers I would suggest either getting the catalyst 10.10e drivers with hotfix (google that, driver archive sites have it availible) or getting 10.11 from ATI/AMD directly. GPU-Z results may also help you determine whether this is an example of Gamebryo throwing an especially strange tantrum at a specific combination of hardware or your hardware throwing its own tantrum.

As far I recall it never went over 65° at FNV and I use the stock drivers I guess? - the ones you get from here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
I also dont have artifacts or simular, before patch 3 the PipBoy Weapon/Armor etc. icons went to an black-box, not all of them - just some shortly before the crash

I'm gona run GPU-Z later on, though I also doupt its any hardware problems, I mean I can play SC2, Medal of Honor 2010 both on very high graphic settings w/o problems and Fallout 3 worked on the same GPU allready aswell, with just the usual minor crashes but still, I will check on it. l will post the results here then aswell and yes I have CCC installed.. would be a shame if not when I allready buy a OC card :P (yes its overclocked, but the crashes/problems occure by either overclocked or not overclocked)
also im gona try to recover at CCC next time it crashes and will see if it helps.
thanks so far allready.

Re-install drivers ( use driver sweeper )
Re-install DX

Some games install their own versions of DX

I had this problem with Bioshock...had to re-install DX to get any other game but Bioshock to work.

allready did that, twice.

@charybdisjim
I coudltn find any use in GPU-Z, well ye it shows my graphic card pretty much from a to z but there isnt a stability test or smt, so I went to get ATI-Tool and did run an arfifact test, which drove my card to like 90% Activitiy while being on almost 70° with 45% Fan speed, I let it run for a while and nothing happend - so my card is apperantly stable.
CCC doenst have a "force" option to VPU recover and since it was activated allready, it didnt help either.

Considering your hardware is still pretty decent, I would really recommend an upgrade of your Windows XP to a 64-bit Windows 7. The way XP handles multi core svcks compared to Windows 7 and FO:NV seems to have an issue with CPUs that have more than 2 cores (or even hyperthreading on the core i5) so I wouldn't be surprised if it is related. XP is nearly a decade old, it needs to die and people need to stop using it for this to happen. There are advantages of a 64-bit OS beyond just playing games too and you don't have to have 4gb+ RAM either, contrary to that 2006-esque rumor that also needs to die

which would make sence to do in this case if not a waste amount of ppl using win7 would have to play FNV in compatibility mode: WIN XP SP3 (which I have) anyway just to be able to play at all and especially if it wouldnt be possible to tell the game to just use 2 or 1, or if you feel cookie even 3, cores of your CPU by editing the .ini or just rightclick on FNV process / properties.
Also, Fallout 3 worked perfectly on XP OS systems no madder what the hardware was/is, at least as far I recall, I might be wrong here cus at least I havent had any probs with the game so I didnt really check on it, either way - F3 and FNV = same engine = its definately not the OS.
