CTDs and AI processing

Post » Thu Mar 17, 2011 1:00 pm

Ever since I started playing New Vegas a couple of weeks back I've experienced occasional area specific CTDs. These usually occur when entering areas where some form of scripted AI processing goes on. Usually a gunfight between two opposing factions, but there are other examples.

Tonight I've just had one which is breaking the end of the G.I. Blues quest. Put simply, I cannot enter North Freeside to get around to the train station to intercept Pacer and the NCR troopers there without the game CTD'ing the moment I transition into North Freeside.

On a whim, I tried disabling combat AI with 'tcai' from the consol. No dice. The game still CTD's.

However, if I disable all AI processing with 'tai' then I can quite happily enter the area and walk up to Pacer and the troopers without issue.

But....as soon as I drop down the consol and re-enable AI processing again...bang. The game instantly CTD's.

Clearly there is something very wrong here with some background coding. Whether something's making an illegal call or overflowing some command stack, I have no idea. But there's something in the AI processing routines, or the way they are talking to the rest of the game, which is currently rather broken, since the above behaviour (with disabling and re-enabling the AI) when a CTD of this nature occurs is completely reproducible here.

Anyone else see this particular behaviour...?
