CTDs & Freezing...Trying To Make Sense Of It!

Well basically it's the topic title, I'm trying to understand what is causing the game to just freeze up because it's happened over my last play through's and yet I'm still having it happen so obviously I haven't routed out what it is and if I don't it will just happen over and over again. This is my 4th restart/play through/install whatever you want to call it and that's because of CTDs and freezing and as I say it's still happening.

I do/did have a few big mods running but have since uninstalled/deactivated them thinking/hoping it would solve it but I've been unsuccessful. At the moment I'm at Riften and when exiting the north entrance I have a dragon attack now upon this attack one of a few things will happen. Open my inventory = CTD or freeze, start fighting the dragon = freeze, there is a watch tower not far from the entrance with a chest named (confiscated good) lockpicking that and opening it = CTD, the first Thieves Guild (Taking Care of Business) heading towards Goldenglow Estate = CTD of freeze and I run in to other freezes in some other areas.

I have done the typical troubleshooting of deactivating mods and reactivating a few at a time which help me narrow down some E.G Dragons diversified was somehow the cause of the CTD when opening the chest...but then later it happened again (same chest) even with Dragons Diversified deactivated and uninstalled so we can see where this is a bit complicated.

As I say it's the 4th time starting the game over and I don't really plan of doing it again so with some help I would like to try and route out the cause of this evil. Whats funny about it all is I'm just under 20hours into this play though and it's only just stating now and that's something else the rest of them have in common, they never start straight of the bat it's always after 10-15hours of play.

My load order will follow but it's not the load order I have been playing with, whilst trying to get to the bottom of this I have since removed, Warzones, Occupy Skyrim, Dragons Diversified, USKP, SOS (with fix), Improved Combat Sounds, Levelers Tower, and a few others which has no scripts. I'm on the latest version of the game 1.5.26 and using the latest beta version of SKSE 1.5.6, I use Script Dragon for Auto Potions and Duel Wield Parry, I use the SVN version of Wrye Bash or Wrye Smash (what ever you prefer) 2361 or 296, and BOSS to sort my LO as usual.

Not sure what else I can do so hopefully you guys can lend us a hand. I think that's all the info but if anything else is needed let me know.

AFAIK it's mods with quests that will often conflict with eachother for some unknown reason, causing CTDs if you have more than 1 quest mod active. See how many of these mods have some type of quest included in them.

Yeah I read about that but as far as I'm aware the only one is Black Tower and that's literally just to find the door which is on the way to Bleakfalls Barrow...I don't use quest mods.

I've heard that WATER 1.4a has caused also some CTDs. Also heard that Static mesh improvement has caused ctds for some people, but these might be conflict related issues.

Yep i also read about that too but thought that was due to a lack of VRAM (something I'm not lacking) but it's worth a try seen as both of them mods have been part of all of my previous play through's where all this was happening so I'll remove them too.

Well deactivating the two of them unfortunately didn't help, still ended up CTDing during the fight.

This is a new game...just to be clear this whole thing is from a new game and I'm deactivating mods from a save IN this new game which in 20hours in...if you understand what I mean.

Hmm never once thought of that one, I'll give it a try...should I reset the settings ingame back to default first or just disable it?

EDIT:

Still in the same position, Imaginator reset and disable and still freezes during the fight.

Normal if you just deactivated a bunch of mods that have objects that the savegame can no longer find, or it's full of errors, yes. Try re-enabling all of your mods in the general load order you've been playing with to possibly cut down on the size. It's not like cutting things out has helped any, at this point.

OK added them all back and It's still 12000 lines long and way to big for me to post it, I don't know what the letter count limit is for each post so I may have to post it over 10+ separate posts which ain't very orthodox...any ideas? :confused:

You mention using the USKP, but it's not listed in your active load order. Are you sure you've properly activated it?

Also, when you disable mods, are you FULLY UNINSTALLING them? If you're not, you need to. Skyrim requires a mod be totally removed before you even have a chance of getting rid of its effects. It's no longer enough to simply uncheck the mod in Wrye Bash or something.

And yeah I also read about simple deactivation not being enough no more, so when ever removing a mod I always make sure it's fully uninstalled and everything that goes with it.

Maybe you have too many textures running at once? I once heard that if you have the original texture bsa's in your data folder, and a bunch of texture mods on top of that, it can cause the game to crash. I'm not for sure, but I have had random crashes as well, and almost always after i install a large texture mod. I decompressed my bsa's into folders and replaced the originals with new textures, rather than keep the bsa's in the data folder, and haven't had any crashes since.

Hmm maybe, but then with all mods deactivated (except texture mods) I don't get the crash or freeze...well at least I didn't like I am now, I was able to run around for a good five mins and quit on my own terms, but I guess it's worth a try.

How did you install them back though...I mean what method did you use, repack into a bsa, BAIN, D&D???

The author is still active on the Nexus page for it. Might be a good idea to direct him to the pastebin links. It looks like he needs to get the CK to update the TweakFollower quest and make sure all of the properties are correct. He probably removed some dead ones during an update but didn't force the CK to update the list in the quest.
