Anyway, played FO3 and found it mildly amusing for a while. I am not sure how a sane person wouldn't get bored quickly of killing stuff over and over. The main problem with FO3 and Oblivion is quest svckage. I even tried my hand writing scripts and quests for these games and it became obvious why the quest svckage occurrs ..... the engine makes it almost impossible to write anything but sandbox quests IMO, but then again I am not very talented. Is there any quests in FO NV that rise above the sandbox variety? Can good voice acting and clever trigger design make up for the engine? I am personally of the mind that pointless quests are still pointless even if there are many of them.
Mass Effect 1 and 2 are my standard of excellence despite their many and obvious flaws and overuse of combat. Yes you still shoot stuff over and over (yawn) but at least it fits in as a part of a complelling picture AND there is excellent plot and character interaction as part of the mix.
I remember the tipping point of FO3 ....... My avatar just rescued her father from the dream world machine and exited that vault. At that point he (the game) decided that it would be a good idea to run all the way back to Megaton, getting himself killed about 500 times in the process. It was infuriating and game breaking. At the same time I realized that firing and hitting unarmoured mercs with a Fat Boy didn't kill them due to the weird scaling. Couldn't play after that. That it the problem with big long sandbox games, its quantity not quality and sooner or later combat gets broken.
