Curious (and a little worried) about how characters will be

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 6:54 am

I'm used to FPS games just storing your character on their servers. If you play the campaign you can just back up the save data to a flash drive or something, usually if you've played it through you never play it again anyway.

Then I realized with Brink that it HAS to support the character offline... I know that with my connection, that's where I'll spend most of my time. This means the character has to be saved to the HDD (or whatever)... in that case, there's nothing to stop people uploading their data online for others to save and use, with everything unlocked. Some games lock their save files so they can't be copied, I assume to prevent this from happening. Here is where MY worries come in.

Does anybody know how characters will be stored? Because if they're saved to the HDD and the files are locked, I will be pissed... I had 5 RSOD's in a year a couple years back, and my PS3 has frozen across 3 games in the past month or two. I don't really trust my PS3 to hold out for my entire time with Brink, and I really don't want my progress to be lost because SD or Sony locked the files and I couldn't back them up... even if I can understand why they would do it.

Not entirely sure on that one. Never thought about it.

If you haven't read it, the Compendium is linked in my signature, so you can click that and look for the info there. I don't recall it going so deep into how characters are saved, but you can still check, learn what you can, and maybe read the whole thing and know everything we do.

Hope you find your answer, dude.

You could try searching through the other games that SD has worked on, and see what the process was as far as character/account information goes. I've never been a big PC gamer, so I don't know all that much about their other games.

Because BRINK is capable of going online, your characters will need to be synced with both your HDD and SD's servers. That way, it is possible for you to access them from other locations, and should you lose your data, SD has the last copy of your save files stored on their servers.

SD has no servers, PC servers will be self or game server hosted, saves are self stored, on consoles, no idea, I'd back up to flash if possible, consoles seem to die for no apparent reason
