Creating a Companion

From Creation Kit

The following procedure will create a basic companion using Bethesda's generic companion system.
  • Create an NPC using the blah blah blah Then make the following changes on each of the tabs in the NPC setup window.
  • Factions Tab - Add the following with the rank appearing in the first column: -1 CurrentFollowerFaction, 0 PotentialFollowerFaction, 0 PotentialMarriageFaction.
  • Relationship Tab – Right click and select New, and add the following in the popup window:
    • Name: NPCFormIDPlayerRelationship (CMBreePlayerRelationship for example).
    • Parent: Should already be filled in with NPC FormID(i.e. CMBree). Do not change it.
That sentence that is underlined does not happen so I cant create a relationship. Fix this today please.

Yes I have saved the new character before trying to create a relationship and no that does not solve the problem.

i dont see why this wouldnt work. i have done this recently so its not something that was broken in 1.6.89

alternatively you can create a relationship object manually in the object window and it will automatically be added to your actors

I just tried it, again, and it works fine for me. I did this before on 1.5 and now I'm using 1.6.89.0.

Fix this today please.

I'm curious, who's suppose to fix it, today?

My version of the creation kit is brand spanking new as I downloaded it yesterday. The current version doesn't work. I am not the only person with this issue. Go watch some of the tutorials on youtube and read through the comments if you dont believe me. Several other people are having this issue. It's a bug.

Who's supposed to fix it today? I don't know, how about someone that works at a million dollar company called Bethesda. If not them then boy are we in trouble...

It might be important to note that it is in the adventure of creating a relationship on a follower that will be using a custom race. So perhaps the error is due to the follower having a custom race applied to it.

I didn't say I didn't believe you... the CK has lots of bugs. The point was that I wasn't having the problem with the steps you outlined. So the problem probably is related to your custom race. And maybe Bethesda really will fix it "today"... and I would certainly love it if they did fix it, and all the other bugs, but I'm not holding my breath. If that is your expectation, you are likely going to be disappointed.

@Sollar I'll certainly keep your advice on my expectations in mind... not really because it's not helping. I'm here to report an error that multiple people are experiencing since the release of the latest patch and unless you know how to fix it your posts are just you getting your post count up and they do not assist in fixing the error. So if you expect people to heed your words and listen to your sage advice the way you are going about it, you are likely going to be disappointed.

Yea, I'm not happy.

@Amethyst Deceiver - I never had this issue prior to patch 1.6 so I disagree and believe it entirely to be a result of the recent update. The manual relationship creation does not work either as I attempted that route as well prior to posting. Then did a little searching on google and found out other people were having the same problem. Thus I come to these forums to announce the issue. I reported it, they will hopefully fix it asap so I can get on with my project.

i should also note that i was also using a custom created race, and all of the relationships were created normally without problems (both prior and after the 1.6 update)

since i don't believe i have a magic version of the CK, i think there might be something that you and the others who reported the same problem might be overlooking. sorry if this isnt of any help, but i am strongly against reporting bugs that arent actually bugs (if you can outline a set of conditions in which this is repeatable for anyone, i would be convinced it is a bug, but since i was able to successfully create the relationships using the conditions you listed, i dont think there is a bug)

suppose you did manage to get bethesda to look at this, and they cant recreate the bug on their end either? how exactly are they supposed to fix it?

The thing is that several people are posting on these tutorial videos about the same exact error and I am sure that not all of them are doing the same thing I am doing with a custom race. Here's a way for you to test whether its an error or not. You uninstall your creation kit right now then redownload and install it. Course if yours isnt broken that would be dumb now wouldnt it cause you'd probably get the broken version. Just cause your version number is the same as everyone else doesn't necessarily mean that there is not a version, labeled exactly the same that doesn't have exactly the same coding which is what is currently downloadable.

I'm going to unistall my creation kit again and redownload it again for the third time today and try to create a character without the custom race...again today....and maybe this time I'll get lucky. I've gone through this process a few times over and have still been getting this same error. I also have attempted to create a standard follower not of a custom race from just the Skyrim esp data and the issue is continuous. Since my version of Skyrim was reinstalled not but three days ago this has to be an error. I have created custom followers dozens of times in the past and this error has never been an occurance until 1.6.

I am positive this is a bug and wouldn't bring it up to Bethesda if I was not certain.

Well I'll be gosh darned, for some unknown reason it works now. I didn't even do anything. I got up, went and took a shower, had a smoke, came back and now for no apparent reason it's working. I literally didn't do anything different and now it works.
