[RELz] Cutthroat Merchants

== Cutthroat Merchants ==

If you've played Skyrim for more than one hour you'll have noticed that it is easy to get rich. Very easy. Gold is abundant after a short while and you can't even sell most of your loot to merchants since they don't have enough money to buy everything you have. Your speech skill doesn't make that much of a difference and more money isn't needed anyway.

This mod decreases the amount of gold you get for selling items and increases the amount of gold you need for buying items. There are four esps - easy, medium, hard and very hard. Pick one of them.

By default in the vanilla game you sell items for 50% the price with 100 speech and for 30% the price with 0 speech. Perks will give you even more gold when selling items. For buying it's the other way around, with 100 speech you will buy items for 200% of the original value, with 0 speech for 330%.

This mod changes it to the following values depending on the esp you choose:

- Very Hard -

100 speech - 20% sell / 500% buy
0 speech - 7% sell / 1500% buy

- Hard -

100 speech - 25% sell / 400% buy
0 speech - 8% sell / 1200% buy

- Medium -

100 speech - 33% sell / 300% buy
0 speech - 11% sell / 900% buy

- Easy -

100 speech - 40% sell / 250% buy
0 speech - 13% sell / 750% buy

- Vanilla -

100 speech - 50% sell / 200% buy
0 speech - 30% sell / 330% buy

= Installation =

Put ONE of the esps into your data folder and activate it in the launcher/mod manager/plugins.txt. To remove the mod simply delete the esp, the merchant prices will be back to normal.

Did you JUST change the Speech skill multiplier, or Speech perks too?

Only the speech skill multiplier. The perks are a bit pointless, I'd rather wait for the CS to make a complete overhaul of the speech skill. Have some other ideas for it as well which would be impossible to do with TESSnip.

Yeah, ideally I'd like to see a way for sell values not to dip below 1 so I still have a reason to grab/steal every Nord Mead / Wine / Plate in sight and sell 'em! It's a time-consuming process and not as worth it as clearing out a dungeon, but I play a Thief :)

Awesome, I think I'll grab the easy one for now, seems about where I'd put the values if I had the CK on hand anyways.

Thanks for this.

I like it. Now I feel like I have to be more self reliant. I'm using the very hard version, and I finally feel like cash is something worth working for. :)

Thanks!

How are you guys making all this money.

My character is level 24 and has about 24 grand loot. He has probably spent 10 grand and saves only the highest level gear.

Are you all schlepping back to town every last thing you find in a dungeon?

This one may not be for me, but good start!!

I look in each container, but I never go into the same dungeon twice to carry even more loot back to town. I only take what is best and leave the rest alone. Yet I still have 30k gold, the house in Whiterun with all upgrades and a horse. I use the training feature every second level or so. And I even buy a lot of other stuff, like soul gems, health potions, expensive ore, ingredients. Only to be able to sell all the stuff I have. Money was abundant for my character right after the first three dungeons and it became worse afterwards. If you start with alchemy it becomes absolutely ridiculous.

No idea how you manage to be that short on money (even though 24k is not exactly short on money?), you find half a dozen of expensive rings and amulets in each dungeon, those alone are worth more than the average merchant can buy.

EDIT: This mod is still not the final solution for the problem, for me at least. Merchants need better stuff to buy, stuff that is actually useful. Leveled rewards need to go. For example the guy at the bottom of High Hrothgar who asks you to deliver a few goods to the Greybeards gave me 1000 gold for my little service. That's ridiculous. Are people swimming in money in Skyrim?

Agreed. Some miner in Malcath complaining about work gave me 700 gold which he said was his week's pay.

Thanks for this. My level 15 character has 13,389 gold (she's bought a horse but no house yet). She mainly buys health potions and lockpicks, and the occasional crafting component. Going through Ustengrav tonight I was thinking that it's a little sad that I'm passing up entire rooms full low-and medium-priced loot. But, heck, I don't need it anymore. It isn't worth my time. I am even beginning to not care if I sell an item to a merchant for half price.

I am definitely going to give this mod a try. Thank you. I look forward to seeing what you do with the economy when the CK comes out!

i stopped taking everything thats not nailed down after i discovered how to make iron ore into gold rings ( buy iron ore from bsmith guy -> transmute to silver then gold ore -> smelt -> make 2 rings with 1 bar. end conversion is 5 per iron ore - 60 per ring for a 55 septim profit per ore i buy.
iron ore mines are dam awesome when i find them a few k worth of ore at least better than gold as normaly gold mines are small as well, well except THAT one i won't spoil where it is.

The transmute spell needs to be rebalanced, it feels like a cheat to me now. For all practical purposes it gives you infinite gold ingots, and any level 1 character with no investment in alteration or magicka can cast it. I think the way to go would be to break it up into an Apprentice-level spell for iron->silver and an Expert level spell for silver->gold.

Might be a bit outside the scope of this mod though ;)

So far I've only played a character who specialized in two-handed, heavy armor and smithing. But after looking the spell up on the Wiki it's another  game mechanic implemented by Bethesda. Even with a higher skill requirement it would be overpowered imo since it simply means unlimited money. Maybe if you would need 5 iron ore for 1 silver ore and 5 silver ore for 1 gold ore plus a higher skill requirement it would be somewhat balanced. I will need to check out the magic system with my next character.

I did a similar build (light armor instead of heavey armor), and found the transmute tome in loot early on. It was pretty ridiculous that my low-level warrior was able to turn iron ore into gold jewelry.

Good point, agreed.

Mods like this are necessary because there are those of us that don't take everything we find in a dungeon and we don't do crafting skills. All I tend to take are gold, gems, and jewelry. I thought I was rich when I returned to the College with 12K. Sad to say, I couldn't even buy all of the spells in one school magic (appropriate for my level) with that amount of money. I'm down to 500 gold again. I don't own a house; I still have to use a room in the college.

Having a follower means you can carry almost (or maybe more) than twice as much stuff out = even more cash!

Hasn't really to do with this mod, but I'll say it anyway:

Another way of avoiding too much riches in the game is to lower the carry capacity of the hero drastically. This is done in the console with the following command:

player.forceav carryweight

For example:

player.forceav carryweight 100

I set it to 50 while I was level 1. After leveling up a bit in Stamina I brought it to 100. This is a little over the top, but I like it. This way you can't bring back all of the enemies weaponry and armor to sell them. In addition, you have to plan a little bit before going out to adventuring. Do you go lightly armoured, with only a sword to a dungeon, so you have some room left for riches you will find, or take the 2-H Hammer and Heavy armor to protect yourself, but then you can't carry all the fine stuff you'll find?

I also tend to lower my followers carryweight, or never use them as pack mules in the first place.

Oh, and thanks for this mod, I'll download it rightaway :)

I wasn't aware it was easy to get rich... the most gold I have ever had at one time is 24000....and the 20k is from the Dark Brotherhood questline.

Personally, I like this mod (I am using the medium version) because it gives my character an increased carrying capacity.

I hold on to things that seem to have sell value, and with this mod I can actually unload my inventory on shopkeepers. The actual money involved is not particularly irrelevant to me -- I'm making these decisions based on how I see my character's role. I know that the system can be exploited to crank my character's damage or coins up to incredible levels, but I do not have fun playing that way.

If I want to do something not fun, I am not going to waste that time on skyrim.

So, anyways... I like this mod.

A tangentially related mod I would like would be Abusive Guards (when they arrest you, they confiscate high quality gear that was not stolen -- and they do not stick it in a chest, they keep it for personal use, and if your gear quality is high enough they occasionally arrest you for minor infractions, or maybe just because you have a record). It's not that I want to lose my gear, I just like how this kind of thing makes my play feel.

My current one is 48 and has well over 200K gold, I kinda abused the Enchant Banish onto Iron Daggers bit, ID's value bloats to nearly 2k value once enchanted with this and it does not need to be a good enchant either just a petty enchant yields this level of value.

This is a terrible idea as all it would do if force people to constantly reload saves from before they got robbed, not exactly a solution.

Getting gold is somewhat easy you can load up the bank numbers nicely, but, gold is easy to spend to, on training, potions, home buying, home decor........btw that makes me hope for a version of Imperial Furniture but anyway
