[BETA] Dan's Presidential Upgrade

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 7:38 am

Hi there!
My new mod is pretty much finished - I just need some good people to try it out for me.
What does it do? Go to your suite in the Lucky 38 and access the upgrade terminal to find out.
Sorry to be mysterious, but the mod is cooler the less you know!
There's more to this little upgrade than meets the eye...

You can download it here. (Beta removed - grab v1.0 from the http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=38662!)

Hopefully there shouldn't be any bugs, but I'm bound to have missed something.
I'd also like to know if you feel it's too hard/overpowered.
Many thanks!
Dan

A quick thanks to all of you who have downloaded the beta thus far - I can't wait to hear what you think!
For those of you who need a little more convincing...

  • Here is the website for my http://freespace.virgin.net/dan.taylor1000/ (it's been a while!)
  • It has a rating of 9.81 on Planet Elder Scrolls.
  • This one isn't nearly as big, but it's high quality.
  • http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2556 is the mod that inspired me.
  • The mod is at BETA stage, but I have tested it thoroughly - all that remains is to generate some lip-synch files.

Please give it a try - the more feedback I get, the better the initial release will be!

Dan

This is fun, overall I was very impressed. I confess that at first glance I thought this would be yet another generic 'pimp the Lucky 38 Suite' mod, I'm glad I gave it a second look.

There did appear to be some possible navmesh issues; Veronica and Rex kept getting stuck and taking weird routes, especially in the upper part of Bay 4.

Just a thought, it would probably attract more notice with more information. Or a place on nexus we can look at pretty pictures and see others comments(Some of which can be somewhat useful).

Also a little shy about downloading a mod that I have no idea what it will add to the room. Depending on what is done, and how it is done I'd be worried about conflicts.

All that being said, keeping an eye on this thread. I have hoping for something that adds a 'cool' factor to that room. As it stands in vanilla, I visited it once and never came back.

Hi there.
Thanks for the tips.

Cordsnwires, that's good info re: the navmesh. This has been a hard thing to get right as Navmesh testing doesn't work in Windows 7 64.
I took a while, but this is now fixed!
Thanks for giving the mod a go, now you understand why I want to downplay the content...
Tell me, did you unlock all the Maintenance Bays? I'm particularly keen to know if a particular something is properly balanced...

Mavkiel, thanks for the advice. I'm hoping that people who play the mod say nice things about it here which will convince others to try the beta.
You raise a very good point... but this mod is way better if you don't expect its content! I'm sure Cordsnwires will agree.
To answer your questions...

This mod won't conflict with anything unless it...
1. Alters the scripts for the Lucky 38 Elevator
2. Alters the upgrade console in the Lucky 38 Suite

Don't be shy... if you think the mod is rubbish you can always just deactivate it.

Oh all right then, here are some pictures:

And while you're on Flickr, why not check out the http://www.flickr.com/photos/55314363@N07/sets/72157625560893254/with/5129590509/ I made for Halloween this year!

I hope that's enough to convince you that I mean business with this mod!
Thanks to everyone who's downloaded it already - keep that feedback commin'!

Biggest problem I had was getting stuck on some props along the halls, while standing on top of them.

Otherwise a nice little quest. Would have been cool to have something more happen in the secret place. I was honestly expecting something to scare me.

Yeah, I explored them all.
Spoiler
However I haven't used the sword in combat yet, if that's what you were wondering about. If you want, I will report back after I have had a chance to try it out.

Yes, definitely.

I hate downloading something I know nothing about. There are many types of things I have no use for. So I will never use them in game. I would hate to install this, just to remove it again, because it isn't something I want. Surprises are not what I want. More info PLEASE.

I can certainly understand the desire to not give out spoilers, but I also am in the camp of "as a general rule, I won't bother with a mod that I don't have at least some information about".

IMO there is a middle ground between giving out some information without giving too much away - it is all just in how you word things.

...but for myself, given that some of the most popular mods for FO3 (for example) do things in game that are not compatible with my desired gameplay... really there is no amount of people posting, "This is great, you should try it!" that is going to override my sense of "Not going to install without more information".

Not saying you should change your approach to suit me, as I'm nobody special. Just offering my point of view in case there are others that share it (seems there are at least a few), and to allow you to make your own decision based on that.

Spoiler
Not really a melee character, but the sword seemed pretty powerful to me.

I gave this a try today.

It's a very nicely put together mod, well done ! . It's lore friendly, has a variety of checks & balances (money, science, lockpicking and plain old keen-eyed investigation) so as not to make the ultimate reward too easy, and I think the weapon is fairly balanced and has a nice Easter Egg quality to it :obliviongate: . My character is a melee user and I thought that the stats were nice on this - not uber or unbalanced, just a bit better than the 'good' melee weapons.

A couple of suggestions and issues:
* Kildare (exceptionally well done !) offered various types of healing but didn't seem to recognise that my character was suffering from radiation (dialogue just looped, no further dialogue tree opened and I could not specify any sort of medical treatment)
* have you considered putting this into an alternative location than the Lucky 38? I don't mean something completely unrelated, perhaps a warehouse used by House in the old days to store gambling machines etc. The reason I would suggest this is that some of the facilities offered by your mod are already in the Lucky 38 suite. If you make this a separate location somewhere else on the Strip & add a bed it really can become a home.

Hello again!

Thanks for all your help - I've finally finished the mod.

I've fixed the dodgy navmesh and the broken dialogue when female characters speak to Kildare (Ygern, you play a female character right?).
I've also expanded Bays 1 & 2 - they filled up pretty fast once I started using the mod properly!

Poison_Berrie, do you recall exactly where you got stuck? I couldn't seem to replicate your bug...

Thanks also for the feedback on how I describe my mod - I should be able to create a good balance of info vs. intrigue now.

I'm going to upload the mod to the NV Nexus tonight - will post a link as soon as it's up!

Cheers,
Dan.
