Dancing with the Giants

"Giants are generally peaceful creatures"

That's a sentence seen on countless loading screens, followed with a picture of a giant looking like he's deep in thought.

On top of that, they herd mammoths, produce cheese from said mammoths milk, and create ornamental bone jewelry to be carried around. Not to mention their log-like stone clubs.

So it is to be concluded that these beings are intelligent, at least above average monster-IQ.

Then I have to ask the question: WHY THE HECK CAN WE ONLY KILL THEM?

I mean, if given the chance, I'd befriend the heck out of them and chill. Perhaps learn their language, which they must have since groups of giants are able to set up camp and have a nice little farm community which simply cannot be accomplished without ways of communicating. I'd get a giant bro, and we'd travel the land, protecting the weak, hunting mammoths and rest at night at the giant bonfire we'd make to roast our mammoth ribs.

But noooooo, all I can do is kill the cozy giant motherf**kers for their toes and whatever gold and hide they have on them. Then continue to ravish their livestock and steal their food resources.

Of all the bugs and minor flaws there is in this game, this is the one to annoy me the most.

I was also disappointed there wasn't more to the giants, I had all this cool stuff in my head about what they might do with it when the game came out, only to find they are just something to kill:(

For that matter, I also found it weird that they set up this whole interesting backstory with the Forsworn, but again..they are only there for killing.

You can befriend the forsworn, they're better for killing though IMO ha.

OP, I agree completely. You can find some friendly wandering giants/mammoths though.

I don't know if it's a bug or not but after saving a certain important Forsworn, only the people in one cave are friendly to me.

I know, and I always enjoy encountering them. I keep a deer venison in my inventory for those moments and I always drop it in front of the giant to see if he accept my peace offering.

He always just looks at me and wanders off, though. :(

Agree with OP! They are a really source of income though, I just do a fast travel tour the giant camps every now and then. At first I didn't want to kill them but after one of them sent me flying 100 km up in the sky (I could see my house from theeere) with his club while I was fighting one of my first dragons in my low levels I have no mercy for them.

Only in Elder Scrolls games do people go to these lengths. I force myself to sleep at least 6 hours a day - no exceptions. My mate collected hundreds of wooden ladles and would leave them beside people he murdered, thus entitling himself the 'ladle murderer'. I think the worst i saw was when another friend on mine closed the door behind him before going to sleep. I nearly died.

I agree with you totally! They're evidently intelligent and placid creatures, so why does the game make your charecter perceive them as big nasties??

I was dissapointed that they were so aggressive. Of the times I've been killed, several times were due to approaching a giant to talk to it and getting smashed into the ground. Even if you put your weapons away and back off they still attack.

It seems ludicrous that a peacefull intelligent creature would mindlessly attack and smash anything that was simply trying to be friendly.

Friendly and peaceful giants, right, tell it to this poor khajit caravan and his poor horse. Dead khajit's tail was still on the move, sad, very sad. I'll kill any giant on sight, no exeptions.

Giants are 'peaceful' because they only attack if you get to close or harm their mammoths. Plus, they don't chase you very far. I suppose they attack you and you can't become friends with them because of the language barrier and that the population of skyrim hates them so much and looks at them with distaste (i.e. you get bounties to hunt them from stewards).

You're Dovahkiin not Dances With Giants!

I'm joking, I just wanted to say that, you're thread title reminds me of the movie Dances With Wolves.

Though I did make it my number one mission to iradicate Giants after seeing two lonely, peacefull farmers get decimated by a giant, they're in no way peaceful.
