Dang it Meeko!

Well I got this dog named Meeko. Never had one in the game before. I wasn't sure what to do with him so I just let him follow me around.

I discovered that he was actually very good in a fight however. He was taking out bandit chiefs on his own while I would snipe out archer and such. I thought he would never die (or was essential somehow).

Well he followed around for about 10 levels and we eventually ended up in Lost Knife Cave in some random Companion's quest. All was going well and we were taking out all the bandits (Silver Hands actually) and then suddenly Meeko got between me and a bandit and ... died. Yep, my sword whacked him and he just stood up frozen (bug I've seen off and on since 1.4 patch). I debated for a long time whether or not to reload. It wasn't that I was on some 'no reload' kick or anything, but I think it was just Meeko's time.

Already I kind of miss that dog. I wish he could have known a few more tricks. :(

Has anyone else gotten much use out of Meeko?

I've never actually used any of the animal followers just because they could die while we're in the middle of a fight.

I love having Meeko and Vigilance as a companion, but they tend to run right in front of me as I'm swinging my weapon and get one-shot. Then I feel terrible and reload. I stopped bringing them with because constantly reloading became bothersome. ._.

The dogs are far too annoying for me to use anymore after experiencing Barbas. Even if the normal follower ones are not quite as bad, they still have some very annoying issues that make them unusable for me like the jumping into the line of fire one outlined above. I use a mod to allow for many more normal followers and usually take 2 human ones along with me. With increased spawns and other increased difficulty settings, having them along is no where near unbalancing and feels just right.

I like Meeko a lot and used him for one dungeon and then took him back home. I had Lydia already and it's close quarters in those dungeons so it's easy to hit each other. With conjuring and all that, it just gets crowded. I should go by the shack and take him some meat. :tes:

I found Meeko once and had him following me. We didn't run into any trouble we couldn't handle until I decided to venture up to ye olde Thalmor Embassy to see what things were like there after the Stormcloaks took Haafingar and won Skyrim's independence from the Empire and their damnable treaty.

Turned out there were still Thalmor hanging around the place, and they were as snotty as ever. Da noive! I tried to share the love of Talos with them like the good Samaritan I am, and they just went nuts and before I knew it my sweet little doggie was dead.

My vengeance was as sweet as it was swift. Made a nice bit of coin selling off their robes and armor, and had a steaming hot pot of dogmeat stew for dinner. Now my faithful Meeko will be with me forever, or at least until I can find a properly secluded bucket. :P

Meeko's less a battle companion for my character than he is a simple companion/follower. He stays with her in her home(s) and follows her around town, and will trot at her heels whenever she's traveling anywhere out of doors. But I've never, ever taken him into a dungeon of any sort. Too dangerous--too much enclosed space, and too many chances for friendly fire. So he dutifully sits and guards the entrance (and the horses, sometimes) while Eira and Erik do the actual dungeon-diving.

Also, he's capped at level 25 IIRC. My character's currently level 33. Even if I did take him into dungeons he'd be way too squishy at this point. :P

Lydia, Meeko and I traveled Skyrim far and wide, dispatching foes right and left. Both fearless and strong warriors - with that annoying problem of stepping in the way. I also noticed that the attribute points weren't going up as much because they were taking out the enemies too fast. So, Lydia stays at Breezehome with Meeko and when I'm back in Whiterun, I take Meeko out for a walk around town to the various shops.

How do you get him to live in your house permanently (if such a thing is possible)? I had him one time and took him home and left him there and when I got back from my next adventure he was nowhere to be found.

OTOH now that I think about it, that might have been a random Stray Dog and not Meeko. But if there's a way to get him or any dog just to live in my house and follow me around town, that would be awesome.

I do use a couple mods for followers but I can't remember if they affect the animal followers or not. The dogs are the only ones you have "dialogue" with... can't remember if any of the additional follower dialogue came up with the dog or not or what option I chose if it did.

I don't think you can actually change his home. You can have him 'stay', and he will, but after a couple days he returns to where you found him.

Yeah, I read right over the part about taking him out of the city but not into dungeons. Obviously if you don't tell him to follow you again within the specified time frame, he's like - "screw this waiting, I'm outta here!" Which is weird, you'd think a lonely stray pup would appreciate living indoors in a warm fine home with plenty of raw meat just laying around all over the place as usually seems to be the case.

Too bad the followers "relax" mod doesn't work on doggies, I've never had a follower bug out from boredom or waiting too long since I've been able to take them somewhere and just tell them to chill until I get back. Maybe I should see if there's a mod for turning strays into homebody doggies. It would be awesome to walk in the house after a long adventure and have some little feller there barking hello and wagging his tail.

Right--as others have said, he still follows my character everywhere, just not into dungeons specifically. :) So when she's at Breezehome for instance, he's there too, but if she were to tromp off to Winterhold he'd come with her rather than stay in Whiterun.

I believe there is a mod that lets you assign dog followers a player-owned house as a new "permanent" home--at least I've seen one on TES Nexus--but I don't use it. Eira's main house is a modded/custom house, and there isn't a mod (yet) that lets you assign dog followers to those permanently. So I'd feel just as guilty "abandoning" Meeko in Breezehome as I would his shack up by Solitude.

Well, you can still tell dog followers to "relax" with that mod (at least the mod I'm using, "Followers Can Relax"...is that the one you're talking about?). I don't know if they'll stay in wander mode permanently though; never tried it.

I just use the existing player homes from vanilla, altho they are modded versions of the homes. Navmeshed for followers though so maybe I'll look into it.

Yep, that's the one. I'm pretty sure I told him to relax and not just the vanilla wait command. But he still left. Oh well.

OTOH with my current PC I told Stenvar to relax in Hjerim one evening and when I got up the next morning he was gone... couldn't find him anywhere. Had trading to do so I went out and about my business... didn't see him in town anywhere, even checked the inn and he hadn't gone back there. Went back to Hjerim thinking I'd have to exit the game and look up his ID to console myself to where he was, or him to where I was... but when I went into the house he was just sitting there in a chair munching on some bread. So, I dunno... maybe he goes out back to the little boy's room for an extended sit-down first thing in the morning, lol. And maybe my doggie just went out to do his business and sniff around the neighborhood and then came back on his own as well. I retired that character and never went back to Breezehome much, he could be back there laying at the foot of the bed now for all I know. :P

You mean "Stray Dog" is one dog, not a kind of dog? Damn. I guess I shouldn't have told him to wait, which he didn't. I left him by the shops in Whiterun, and when I went back a short while later from Breezehome, he was gone.

I had Meeko a few times.

He's good but walks straight into attacks.

He also tried to push me off Bards Leap Redout.
I teleported there, he was shoving me off and I was hanging on by my toes.
I had to dismiss him and the markarth housecarl before I fell off.

I now don't have him. He's nice, but dies too much from running in front of you.
I was killing him more than enemies were.
Shame he can't come home with you when dismissed. :(

I've had one dog, I bought it, used it, became annoyed by it and told it to wait in my house because I thought it would stay.
It didn't, then I was faced with the choice to buy a new dog? Hell no, dogs are not my cup of tea in this game.

So even the dogs you buy won't stay in your house? I know Meeko will go back to where you find him, but were does a dog you bought go?

AFAIK the only dog you can buy (unless you've modded one in for that purpose) is Vigilance, a "war dog" sold by the guy at the Markarth Stables. The stables are his home so if he leaves you for some reason that's where he goes. If you want him back you have to go back there and buy him again.

It's what I also do now that I'm at a very high level. I leave Meeko with Lydia at home and when I return after 2 days I take him with me for safe travelling to Solitude, Riften, Markarth, just to visit our other homes. But he always stay at Breezehome with Lydia. She seems to like my Meeko very much.

Well I found a mod that will supposedly let you assign your player home as a new home for Meeko when and if you adopt him. I just bought Hjerim and am on my way from Hjaalmarch towards Dragonbridge on my next assignment so it's a good bet I'll run across him if I look hard enough. :P

I think it will still let you make him follow you if you want, it will just reassign his home location so if you dismiss him again he will go there and hang out. That will be awesome as I can then take him for walks in the city and stuff. I just hope he makes it back there with me. I guess I could just send him on ahead, we'll have to see how it works out.

Thanks for the tip. I can use that dog for a certain Daedeic quest. Or I use that mage from a one of the Daedric quest for that certain Daedric quest.
