Dark Corners Of The Earth: The Comic

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 3:21 am

I still hold out hope that someday someone will make a sequel to this game. But until that day comes i thought i'd take it upon myself to make a sequel of my own in the form of a comic book. It'll probrably be about 6 or 7 issues long depending on the story. I'm planning on addressing several things in the game that probrably don't need to be addressed but would be fun to address, like how the Preacher man got elder signs in all those different places throught the game, like in the tunnels, the underwater city and right in front of mother Hydra. The comic will probrably be closer to "A shadow out of time" than "A shadow over innsmouth". And i am absolutley planning on an appearence by you-know-who :cthulhu: . And though Jack is technically "dead", he's still the star. Remember, he takes after his dad. ;) What i'd like to know from you is what do you think is essential for this book? What HAS to be in it both from the mythos and the video game?

thats a cool idea, I'll buy one :DI'd say if the preacher is in his daughter has to be too, Rebecah, I think, although I can't actually remember for sure what her name was. I guess from the sounds of it some of the event will take place before DCOTE in the timeline, and some of those events could be elaborated on, like the masacre in Innsmouth, or maybe a sub story of how Gillman was being investigated by the then fledgeling FBI and a young cross dressing Hoover :D I don't know but there is lots of scope for tying up loose ends in stories like this.

Ray> Thanks for that. I believe i saw a promo video for that game. I believe i will use that plot, with a few personal tweaks of course. I just can't let Jack go (I know, I know) and how DID that priest get those elder signs everywhere? You think anybody will mind? Who was doing that game anyway?William Dyer> Thanks. I had made several short comics in the past and have done all the writing, penciling, and inking myself. I know that making a good comic book takes about 6 or 7 people but mostly i walk alone. I don't have the internet so its hard for me to collaborate with anyone. And this is just for fun so there would be no pay involved. But if you know how to fill word bubbles and put them in the panels, i need to know that. I always do it by hand and it shows. Also i was planning for black and white but if you know anybody who would be willing to color it or even gray-shade it for free, that would also be cool.

I've got a dozen mythos comics, the best of which is probably Neil Gaimans 'Shoggoths Old Peculiar', then there is the 'Fall of Cthulhu' series, a brilliant graphic novel called 'Lovecraft' which is fictional biography of Howard and where he got his inspirations from real life events, absolutely recommended. There is a bunch of other ones that I can't remember the titles of, will have to go and have a look again.

Mafia started about halfway through our 'incredibly prolonged' production, and I suppose there are many similarities especially due to the period genre aspect. I suppose the race was really on between us and 'Max Payne' which they won, and 'Stalker Chernobyl/oblivion', Then Doom 3 came and raised the graphical bar before launch, never mind half-life two. Long development kills your game since it ages quickly at this frantic pace of technology.

Yeah: I got it a few years after it came out and still loved it. But, then, I had a bit of fun wit Neuromancer as well. Which was made in the 80's. Aahh... my eyes!Sorry for off-topic - I too look forward to this project, though I haven't read any Lovecraft comics.

I suggest having Hoover the FBI guy in there, popping in and out of the plot ocassionally. He seemed like a good antidote to Innsmouth's craziness, with his "don't talk cr*p" attitude. (Of course, for this same reason, too much of him would kill some of the atmosphere.)Some more information on the Deep Ones' seizing of the Masonic Lodge back in the day might also be interestng. I always thought it was ironic how the Masonic lodge, the seat of one esoteric society, became a ghastly parody of itself and the seat of an even more esoteric and far more unhealthy society.

Couldn't you load a saved game from near the end of the game and read them? (Or ask Ray for a save at that point if you don't have one.)

Now, at my end, I can fully see... my last case opened in me a new fear, a real fear, a fear of myself, of what I am, and what I've always been... all that I was, is now lost...Hope? Purpose? Pleasure? All meaningless. I now walk in the shadows between worlds, and it is there that I have finally glimpsed upon what lives... in the dark corners of the Earth.Which journal entry do you want? Also, loading a save at the end should let you view em.

Still doing all the research for this and trying to nail down a good plot. While plotting the story and piecing together an outline, i find myself getting all existential and cosmic and stuff. I'm thinking maybe i'm trying to get too deep into the mythos, trying to include a little bit of everything. Its kinda like writing a Punisher story with Galactus in it. Should i try to keep the story relatively grounded or is it okay to get kind of cosmic? Or maybe i could do both, useing Jack to explore the great, big mythos while Madeline keeps the story anchored and relavant? What do you think?

I think you can, and should do some things differently on different mediums, since they have different strenghts and weaknesses, so I guess giving it a kind of Cosmic vibe is suited to comics, also the madness and inner dialogue can be used with overlayd pictures and playing with the lay-out in ways we can't juxtapose in games. Ther are real nice possibilities.

I suggest you focus the comic on grounded reality, but have some cosmic moments. After all, it wouldn't be much of a comic if it were one enormous panel of black, seething chaos. (Though that would be AWESOME with a capital EVERYTHING.) My suggestion is to work your way through the plot so you have something to go by - but that you go all existential and "it's all meaningless!" whenever you get the chance. (So, if a deep-one priest goes on about Cthulhu, for example, you could do a few shots of the big fella to get a grasp of the huge risks at stake.) I imagine that the effect would be of exploring the basic plot, but getting glimpses of cosmic horror that go beyond the terestrial story.

It'll sound hokey, but the best source of inspiration for dialogue, pacing, subplotting, and scene-setting for my comics were adventure-serial-compliations from the late-late 30's to the early-early 50's..." Alright, drop that gun... ! "

Alright, drop that gun... ! "I could almost innunciate a college-type lecture on the import of those-4 words. Another 'help' is studying how Stan Lee, and artist/plotter, Steve Ditko crafted the early 60's stories of Dr. Strange. And to a lesser degree, Spider-Man #1-through-#38, minus the soap-opera stuff..." Wha- ?! He flipped-backwards through the loop !! "" Montana, there's a difference between throwin' a lasso, 'n makin' it stick... ! "As for horror, well... somebody's gotta get killed by it (or the villian). You'll know what's best...

Still working on this. I'll be ready to post some character designs pretty soon. And the plot still eludes me, or maybe i'm just being a perfectionist. That H.P.Lovecraft is a tough act to follow. What really pisses me off is that Ray won't see it. He's one of the ones i really wanted to see it and get feedback from.
