Dark dungeons and caves. Pitch black increases value of ligh

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 9:06 am

oh yes torches themselves would be more greatly useful in truly dark dungeons/caves. I wonder if for the DLC or something else they plan to make naturally dark dungeons that aren't given unnatural light sources. (like really, half the time I was wondering what is making such and such rooms and corridors so well lit.)

it could also make the dungeons scarier and spookier, as well as enhance exploration. :)

Do you think they will put truely dark caves/dungeons to DLC use?

I could not agree more, because everywhere is already lit up, it renders all light sources useless, as well as Vampire Sight *cough cough* :P

I agree i don't like how alot of caves have light everywhere hell sometimes there light on the walls yet there is no light source anywhere to be found. I want pitch black caves and stuff so night-eye and magelight will actually be useful.

Some PC mods do that, and it's really cool.

However, I'd hope that it doesn't transfer as something that's required, because it can also get a little annoying after awhile. Personally, I get to a point where I just want to be able to see everything without struggling.

I want a creepy dungeon as well. It's been a long while since a video game has scared me.

There was such a thing in the Game Jam so maybe they'll release it someday. Until then if you're on a PC use Realistic Lighting with Customization.

BTW. Dungeons are ment to be dark, scary and a struggle...

And that candlelight spell is supposed to be useful. I will use it for the odd dark corner searching for a hidden book or whatever, but have never needed it for combat.

The problem with those darkness mods is that you are the only one using a torch or magelight. All the enemy NPCs run around in the dark and can somehow accurately shoot you in completely blackness.

It enhances immersion, but ruins at the same time.

I agree with this, I think I would have a lot more fun if the dungeons were darker and I actually had to use light spells/torches.

To a point. But the dark-bright contrast that would be entailed in such play would rule it out for me. I don't mind struggling a bit in the game, but it's not worth it to get a migraine.

The one problem with this is that it puts a 2-handed warrior at a severe disadvantage. They'd either have to put away their 2-hander in favor of a 1-hander and a torch or resort to spells that might go against their characters. Unless Beth were to introduce a third option, like the wearable lanterns mod, but that kind of renders torches obsolete.

This is one of the aspects I would like to be implemented as standard patch/upgrade in the game. It makes cave exploration MUCH more interesting.
Horror/fear is one of the characteristics that is pretty much absent in the vanilla version of the game.
Pitch black wouldn′t be necessary , just darker, if You know what I′m tlaking about :)

oh yes, before i got my realistc lighting mods torches and magelight were completely useless. there is absolutely no point in using them. the vanilla game got no real dark places at all.

but they will not add this. just imagine all the players that do not roleplay at all. they would start crying around that they now have to use torches or the candlelight spell. i am pretty sure this is the reason why they did not implement it. they knew it would give them a lot more complains.

the game is pretty dark, but i have made threads about this. A cave wilth bears should not have candles everywhere, unless its explained through placement or other things. Nordic ruins should not have candles lt unless tghere were some explorers recently ect. Its a Game jam thing i want most : almost :P

Lit torches or something similar on the walls of dungeons that "no one has entered in a thousand years" have a long and illustrious history in RPGs.

Beth has improved on this by adding vegetables and fruit in barrels some cases.

Personally, I have always hated pitch black dungeons.

I AM SO SICK OF "THERE'S A MOD FOR THAT!" Like seriously, not everything has to result in a mod, some things Bethesda can just work on. This could be one of them, although it would be nice if there was a cave brightness for those who just want to play without worrying about lighting.

DEPENDS! Which caves?
If I'm stuck in a dark cave with an entire army of Falmer that would svck.... But would be entirely awesome if there was something at the end of the cave for me...

I think that most if not all caves and dungeons should be darker. I think night should be darker. Torches, light magic and night eye should have an actual purpose.

After playing Dragon's Dogma and being forced to wear a lantern in most dungeons and at night, I couldn't agree more. It adds a certain atmosphere that as of yet is not found in Skyrim. The only thing I would say is all a new lighting option, a passive one that you equip and it can hang from your character's waist. Otherwise players who wield two-handed or bows are going to be at a disadvantage in dark places.

Good suggestion re: other than hand held light source..

i think thats the point, two handed and bow users would have to sacrifice that. drop a torch and fight

But there can't be a toggle for everything or the game would never get released.
