I was in Ustengrav following the main quest after finishing up Meridia's quest and receiving Dawnbreaker. I hadn't used Dawnbreaker much in between as I was pissed that an artifact actually had charges like regular enchanted weapons. Not a big deal but a deal less epic mind you.
Anyone with Dawnbreaker knows it's glows pretty bright. I was halfway through the upper sections of Ustengrav when Dawbreaker lit up like a lightsaber, easily 10 times brighter than normal. At first I thought it was going LoTR style and was letting me know an undead was near but there wasn't anything close after searching and yet Dawnbreaker continued to glow out of control. Then I remembered that I had picked up a Chaurus egg sitting in a bowl about the same time my sword changed. I dropped the Chaurus egg and Dawnbreaker went back to normal, picked it back up and the same thing happened, Dawnbreaker transformed again. The problem was I had cleared that level before finding this so I wasn't able to see what exactly it does.
Here's the kicker though, I think it's a timed effect like torches. I need to do some more testing and won't be able to until later tonight. I switched to my bow for a distant kill after loading into the lower section of Ustengrav and when I went back to Dawnbreaker the added effect was gone (it's normal glow was still there). I dropped the Chaurus Egg and picked it up again but no luck this time. As soon as I get out of Ustengrav I plan on figuring all this out but until then...
1. I don't know if you can just add any Chaurus Egg, from your house chest for example, and have the effect work.
2. If it's a timed effect, do all of the Chaurus eggs in your inventory share the same timer?
3. Do you have to loot a new Chaurus egg after equipping Dawnbreaker for this to work?
4. What the heck does it do besides look awesome?
There's a ton I haven't been able to test yet with this BUT I was able to repeat this effect over and over (re-loading) so I don't think it's a glitch. I'm not sure if this will work under different conditions but if you go to Ustengrav, equip Dawnbreaker and loot the lone Chaurus Egg sitting in a bowl in the room to the left (the one that has a ton of large urns) you'll see what I've discovered. There's only one Chaurus Egg in the entire upper level so you really can't miss it.
The effect is done in a way that looks intentional. I just can't figure out why having a Chaurus egg in my inventory would suddenly super charge a sword made to kill the undead.
