Dawnguard and Mods = bad idea

Post » Thu Nov 15, 2012 10:51 pm

I thought I should post this because its seems like a lot you folks are making the basic mistake of attempting to use mods with Dawnguard and 1.7. Fact is there are almost NO mods that are compatible with Dawnguard and 1.7 at this time. If you are using mods and want to play Dawnguard you MUST disable and remove and mods you have, or else you will get mutliple problems of all kinds. Until such time as the mod makers update them to make said mod compatible it is a terrible idea to try to use mods.

It does not matter if mods worked previously, or what order you have them in or even what kind of mods they are. Dawnguard adds in a lot of new data from texture files, to animations, weapon models, enemy units etc etc. Any mod MUST be updated to ensure compatability with all these new additions to the basic game data.

So TLDR; Remove ALL mods before playing Dawnguard, or it WILL break your game and it will be YOUR fault for it doing so.

It really depends on the mod and what it does. I use Immersive Armors, Jaysus Swords, and Warzones with zero issues.

This isn't really true. At all. I have roughly 70 active plugins, and I have 0 issues, except for some that have been proven to be issues with Dawnguard by itself.

I have Dragon Falls Manor and Shack in the woods that is all of the mods I have loaded and the High Resolution DLC. I have played with the mods and have no problems. It is not all mods but I guarantee you that some mods will create unknown issues because Beth has no way to test all mods with Dawnguard.

Mod Incompatibility was kind of obvious right from the start. Anyone with a brain should have been able to figure it out for themselves. Pointing it out now and creating a whole new thread about it 8 days after the release seems really pointless.

What this thread should have been about was the mods that DO work, and the Mods that DON'T work. It's more informative, and far more useful.

Sorry, but I have disabled all mods except the Bethesda HD textures and Skyrim with Dawnguard still crashes constantly. Skyrim was rock solid until Dawnstar was installed. Maybe it'll work if I start a character from scratch but I'm not willing to give up a character I have 90 hours invested in for the sake of some DLC. Dawnguard.esm is disabled and I've reverted to a "pre-Dawnguard" save. Hopefully I can get back to playing instead of swearing every 10-15 mins.

Alas, Dawnguard itself introduces some instability and more bugs to the game. But that's a topic being talked about in other threads.

But back to the topic of this thread, I mostly agree with what Lexandro is trying to say and second the idea that people need to be very careful with which mods they use with Dawnguard and if something does go wrong with your game, chances are high that it was caused by a mod. There's another thread http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1402912-dawnguard-the-mod-compatibility-list/ that lists mods that have been tested and are known to be compatible (or not) with Dawnguard.

Not all mods are bad, though. But if you use them, use your head and don't just add in mods willy nilly since you don't know exactly what they do behind the scenes. Especially mods that use or edit scripts, races, or animations should be handled with care. It would also be ideal if the mod author could test their own mods with Dawnguard and check that it doesn't break anything. And if it does - fix it and tell people that it has been updated so it plays nicely with Dawnguard.

My alternate start mod had a clash with dawnguard because of a broken script linking it to the Hall of the Vigilant (which Dawnguard destroys), but other than that I've had no clashes. Pretty much the same as everyone else in the thread.

OP should stop fearmongering.

I use tons of mods with Dawnguard, some have compatibility issues but I've found most do not...you just need to use your brain and ask yourself "if Dawnguard adds new contant will that content be effected by this mod which wasn't made for Dawnguard?" If its just altering spawn rates then there's no problem as that's a basic system that dawnguard uses. It's pretty simple, in reality...

No reason to attack the op,his post was made in good faith in my opinion - of course you've to check personally if a mod is
compatible or not before install it or start a dawnguard playtrough with the existing ones

honestly, i think its dawngaurd itself that causes all the problems, cause i used to be able to transform into a wolf with no bugs, now i can't do that, yet it still says the character menu isn't availible. so its most likely a problem with the dlc itself

Lex is right. Mods and Dawnguard are a 'use at own risk' issue. I'm running 62+ or - mods, and have had to disable 3 or 4 so far, as I find issues. However, in all fairness, the only real problems I've found are from Dawnguard itself, and that's inexcusable when you consider that for $25 aus I've got something that is fairly niche focussed, and only introduces a pittance of the content for a third of the price of the base game.
