Dead Money - Worth the money?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:03 pm

My PC is currently downloading the patch needed to play Dead Money which is available from Steam for £7.49 ($10?).

Is it worth the money? Roughly how big is the expansion compared to, say, Point Lookout?

Should I buy it or wait until it's available in a sale for next to nothing as it undoubtedly will be in about six months?

I dont have it but it is around $10 ($9.99 - $10.00) and I just dont think I will get it just yet. The steam page says its 10GB in size. Personally I think its of a large size but I am sure most of it is blocked off. I would get it right now but I dont have enough spare funds on my debit card to go ahead and order it. I have cash on me that I could spare but I dont even see a hard copy listed in any stores locally even for the XBox and PS3.

It lasts you quite a while given how you play the game. I bought it and found it quite fun, and im the kinda guy who explores everthing the DLC has to offer, not obbsesively but getting my moneys worth. It will last the average first playthrough "If you care about story and such" quite a while. Id take a chance and say its got the length of mothership zeta for F3. Its worth buying now but if you dont want to spend money on it right now, just save up yer spare change, thats how I bought it ^_^ .Also, I raked in around 30+,000 caps with the gold bars I got.

Also, its the sort of thing where, once you leave, you dont come back. Not like point lookout, It sort of has a linear quest line.

No, that is very incorrect. It's size is about 300 MB.

Edit: actually, it's 448 MB.

Thanks for the replies, I took a big intake of breath when I read "10Gb", which would be bigger than the original I think and Dead Noise's summary was just what I was looking for.

Thanks again.

And who am I kidding, I'm going to get it, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of my life. ...

It's sort of like Operation Anchorage for FO3 but alittle longer, and of course you can't go back. But I think its worth the $10, plus, if youre on a pc, there should be some great mods coming out that use Dead Money's resources.

Of course it's worth it. It's ten dollars. That's how much a meal from fast food costs.

Got about4 hours into it. It's good.

The ghost guys are not near as tough as they make out. Well my unarmed is high, only level 19 though, and I took a beartrap fist off one of em. Now I just punch em'. I have the automatic BAR but I've never fired it, 6 rounds is all I have. The Holorifle is OK but I have no energy weapon skills. I should prolly give it to the mute girl.

Fun. hardcoe Very Hard, but it's not.

Not being able to go back is not good, especially for nerds like me who like to explore every nook and cranny. I love going back to Mothership Zeta every now and then just to try different routes and scenarios.

About Dead Money. I don't like all the red tint and rather rough rendering. The map isn't small, but it feels repetitive. That said, I'm only halfway through. With anything Fallout, I'm always optimistic because I love the concept so much.

So, I might not leave for a quite a while. I'll look hard for mods, if possible. And there are always saves to go back to, right? Right?

All in all this is less a plug-in or expansion, and more an alternate universe.

Yes i didnt care much at all for all those mazes you had to go through to get to place to place. Eventually it got annoying after a while of doing that.

Yes. I play a TON of adventure games...no violence. And the conventions in Dead Money are very much adventure oriented, not action-game oriented. Relying on the foibles of companions is also irritating to me, although I know many action gamers love the team concept of protection and collection and destroy.

Anyway, I will reserve final verdict until I complete Dead Money. As I said, it is the not going back that depresses me the most.

I found it to be well worth the money on several levels.

First, it's a true challenge. None of FO:NV was terribly challenging to me, but Dead Money adds some challenging encounters and some interesting mechanics. There's a focus on survival and limited resources that I found to be very enjoyable given that with even a little fiend or powder ganger farming you can have enough resources to never really have to worry about ammo, health, ect. in the base game.

Secondly, the story is well told and very interesting.

Third, for people that enjoy building the power level of their characters, the after-rewards are quite nice.

Fourth, if you enjoy crafting it really comes into its own in Dead Money with new recipes that are more than just an afterthought. With limited resources at your disposal, crafting becomes a key part of play.

You've got to let go.

:P

Someone will probably release a "return to Sierra Madre" mod in short order. Maybe even me if nobody steps up to the plate. It's not like Anchorage, where you have to reset a whole lot of quests otherwise the game breaks... It should just be a matter of a simple activator, plus setting the ghost people to respawn.

The first time I played Dead Money, I absolutely hated it. Now that I know what all I'm doing, I actually like it.

It's not random, the radio and speakers are place so that the player can't afford to take their time.

£7.49 ($10?).

It is actually $12.13 at todays exchange rate. As usual the rest of the world gets screwed over by an American publisher.
And the VAT argument doesn't cut it, the difference between American sales tax and the UK's VAT means it should have cost around £6.50.
It may only be a pound, but I'm on a very tight budget and every penny counts, never mind the pounds.
