Death by rads: Need help!

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:03 am

hey there!

I'm relatively new to this, as my problem will suggest...

Basically i'm stuck at the bottom of a vault (is it vault 32? The one with loads of radiation and some swmming for codes) and cos i'm a complete novice, I haven't been managing my rads and now everytime I take two steps I die, cos i've got no rad-x or radaway and basically i'm stuck.

It is my own fault but please, any help to get out of this cos i've potentially wasted 23 hours here!

Ps I have no other saves :(

dont rely on autosaves+make multiple backups, lesson learnt

if you have any caravan lunches, use it, they reduce rads, other than that idk

Console in some Rad-X and Rad-Away.

(And maybe learn to keep at least half a dozen saves?)

This is the problem, sorry to say.

I always keep multiple saves in any game that allows it, if only to be able to recover from the problem you've got right now - realizing I made a big mistake and am now screwed.

(And with Bethesda games like Oblivion & Fallout 3/etc, I keep more saves, just as safety in case a save file becomes corrupted.)

Unless you're on a PC, and can use console commands (either to give yourself more Rad-X or teleport out of the vault) you're dead.

Basically what the above three users said... check your Aid tab for anything that reduces rads and/or just cheat and console command it in.

For future reference, you might want to pay attention to the large radiation gauge at the upper right corner of the screen... or the messages that you have deadly radiation poisoning at the top left of the screen... and you definitely want to AT LEAST have 3-5 saves... failing the above suggestions, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you're screwed, sorry. :dead:

well you're not getting stuck due to a bug so having more than 1 save is justified for you.

Push the ` button and type tgm, then get out of the vault and get to the medical clinic to get rid of your rads. Make sure you type tgm again after you get healed or the game will be very boring for you, lol.

If you go on the wiki or on any guide you would notice that everything says to not enter Vault 34 without an adequate supply of Rad-X and Radaway.
Also it says to keep at least ONE manual save outside of the vault in a worst-case scenario.

More than anything though even if you are new to the game you should have known better than to stay inside that place when you
1. Ran out of rad away
2. when you are starting to fall into medium radiation or advanced radiation poisoning.

In this game depending on the auto-save is a big no-no.

And yes like the person above said push '
and then type in tgm
This will give you god mode, Afterwards you can clear out your radiation at the nearby doctor and type in the command again to remove god mode.

Even the Fallout wikia page on Vault 34 mentions the potential for a toxic save, ie one where you're screwed if you stay or even if you try to leave, because the save dumped you past the point of no return.

But yeah. Short of cheating, the only thing to do is start over, and learn the lesson about multiple saves the hard way. If you're on PC, you have a way out. I don't think that's the case with the PS3 or 360.

I found Vault 34 quite by accident my first trip through. I saw the radioactive waste by the mountain entrance, and all the waste sitting in the tunnels to the door, and I put on my radiation suit that I had scavenged. I was still getting 1RAD/sec or so. I explored a bit, before realizing I wasn't going to have enough Rad-X or Rad-Away to survive, and I was having a tough time killing the Overseer and the flood of vault security, so I high tailed it out of there, making a mental note to stock up on more radiation protection.

As for saving, ALWAYS multi-save. At least once before entering a vault, or a building, and then at safe moments while inside the building. And with autosave, that ends up with 3 saves. Might be redundant and unnecessary, but I don't have to necessarily concern myself with toxic saves.

Sorry to hear about that, man. Unless you were a veteran of FO3 its real easy to fall victim to this kind of situation. As others have said, have a rolling set of saves-refreshing one every few minutes or prior to any important dialogue such as a quest giver and before entering a new cell, like a vault. A place like Vault 34(or any big dungeon that gives you a moments pause) set aside one save at its entrance and don't overwrite it til after you safely leave.

Radiation Suit, 20+ Rad X and Rad Away should be in your inventory at all times(every merchant I encounter I always check if they have any for sale even if I don't need to buy or sell anything else from them). Watch for radiation spikes too, 1 rad per second can be negated but you will burn through all your Rad Away very quickly if you hit an area with 3 or more rads per second.

When you go back, be sure to pick up the spacesuit (Repconn) or the advanced radiation suit. (Crescent Canyon middle)

Rad-away and Rad-x don't have weight even in hardcoe, there's never any reason to stash them away. I always bring my entire stockpile of over 200 each wherever I go.

Vault 34..... only place sofar that i had to leave half way through becase i was shining like a glowing one and no rad-away in sight =) resupplying took some time since none at the time had enough rad away.....but evetually i went back to clean out the last bit.

Still remember standing outside the armory (with all the goddies inside) having over 800 rad and thinking..." will i have the time to loot everything and get out before i go into puddlemode" =)

I will be honest, i died my first try because i really really wanted to pick up everything and dont miss anything............

And me dying the first time mmmmmight have had something to do with going over my weight limit and no companion close enough for a transfer hehe.....seconds can be very precious sometimes =)
Room is sneaky with the rads some spots are +4 in there and it makes a hell of a difference hehe.....

But its probably one of the best places in NW simply because it gives you a challenge beyond just killing stuff....hopefully there is more like it out there.......

And first time through any place is allways a thrill.....any tme after that you allways seem better prepared hehe =) strange how that works...

Just wanted to share my Vault 34 story too....

and i do feel for the OP, if you dont have any saves and absolutly no wiggle room , i guess the console thingys your only shot.....
but if you have +- 100 rads before puddlemode you should try just running out its +1 all the way out the vault but in the cave section it is +1 only close′ish to the barrels and when you zone out from that there is a small puddle just infront or outside (depending witch way you go) the entrance....then travel to any doctor and remove glowiness =)

And as stated by others dont forget to make different saves, one before you enter or do something your not sure whats gonna happen and others along the way....its a good thing.

Always do a manual save before entering and leaving a vault.
Nothing like raiding the place silly and smiling with all your loot, only to step outside straight into a pack of Nightstalkers.

Off topic, but that would be a very cool mechanic in the game. Instead of always dying from rad poisoning there should be a chance your character could become "ghoulified".

I'm too cool to be a ghoul!

I would not mind being dipped on the other hand :hubbahubba:
