Deathclaw Quarry

Post » Fri Jan 28, 2011 1:16 am

You know that one quarry a little southeast of Primm i think. I forgot its name but if youve been there you wont forget it.
its THE ONE FILLED WITH DEATHCLAWS

Who hasnt had trouble taking out the alpha male and mother deathclaw?
They are nearly impossible to kill with any weapon that isnt a missle launcher, and with that it takes like 9 missles!
They are also almost impossible if you dont have boone there to pwn them for you.

I went there LVL 22 on "Very Easy!" hardcoe mode, and they werealmost F***ing impossible to kill

Although i must admit they looked freaking awesome! Like satans guard dogs or something!
They are scary

I was wondering who knows some good tactics for taking these things out?
Or any good stories when you went to the deathclaw quarry

When i first went there with boone, i see a deathclaw and decide ill be the distraction while boone pwns it. Im running at it like a jerkoff with my little cowboy repeater out, i think it should be running right at me, i turn around and i see boone trying to kill it with a lead pipe! It was so funny, boone got knocked da F*** out.
Who else has had an awesome story like this??

Its called Quarry Junction.

I tried to run through there at lvl 11...by myself....bad idea. When i reloaded i went around. I actually though i got throught but up near the end i got sideways [censored] by like.....6 of'em....

A good tactic would be to just avoid this place until you got at least 2 followers and you're a high-level....with awesome guns. Thats my strategy.

Normal. Two shots on each. :tops: Level 14 B)

AP 50 calibre rounds do the trick. And DISTANCE.

They're both really easy, Gauss Rifle, EW, damage and critical specced, aim from far far away and go nuts.
I killed every deathclaw there without getting hit once or one even coming as close as 50 meters.
It was cake-walk for me.

You should head to 'Snipers nest' there is a bad ass sniper there that you need 100 lockpick to obtain, best sniper for me.

You know, it took me THREE! [3] Holy Frag Grenades [mini-nuke nades] with +60% dmg from explosives perk , explosives at 100 and everything to explosions maxed out to kill deathclaw alpha male on VERY HARD on hardcoe - lvl 21.

You could also buy like 20-30 frag/plasma mines put them in front of yourself so he runs in them to cripple its legs s its slower then you, and just kite him around - be sure to kill other normal deathclaws around.

Deathclaws are finally DEATHclaws.

BTW - try doing frontal assault on black mountain on very hard/hardcoe ad same with brotherhood of steel bunker. Gauss rifle 1 shotted me through 25 DT and 300HP @lvl 21

Unarmed. Full skill. Ballistic fist. Two to three hits each. Easy peasy.

ah yes Deathclaw quarry.
(the other location of deathclaws being near camp golf but i won't say where cos of spoiler thing)

I've tried a number of methods to kill deathclaws and here is what i've learned from trial and error.

From targeting the specific quarry there's a rather handy place to shoot them from, if you approach it from the north side (via Khan territory) and reach the khan encampment there's a sweet ridge you can use to shoot em without fear of reprisal. I did this with a sniper rifle and it took me about 1 hour and a half to clear the quarry.
Stay in crouch so you get the sneak attack bonus. rocket launchers are okay i guess, imho i haven't tried them out much.

If however a situation presents itself where you have no handy ridge or safe area to shoot deathclaws from above, then you need either a really powerful short range weapon (riot shotgun is good for this i found) or really fast legs.
Or if you have them mines, mines are very useful against them, especially C4 if you can afford it. For one very good reason, mines will always damage or cripple the enemy legs, thus slowing them down. Deathclaws are only terrifying because they can move fast to snap your spine like a twig. once slowed down enough just about any weapon bar melee will do to kill them.

So in short, just avoid the deathclaws until you're a pretty high level and can use powerful weaponry. and listen to the npcs and take the easier route to vegas.

I haven't had trouble with them except when I tried to punch the alpha to death. Even at level 30 with 10 STR and 10 END and T-51B power armor, the thing killed me in one hit D:

Sniping them with an Anti-Materiel Rifle couple with AP rounds or a Gauss Rifle while sneaking took them out right quick. The best part about the Quarry is that there are a lot of places you can sit high at and pick them off from.

But a word of advice: Kill one of the babies, and the Mother Deathclaw will go berserk and attack everything in sight, including the other Death Claws.

I haven't gone back to the Quarry yet, but I have killed a Mother and Legendary Deathclaw in one of the caves that was heaving with them. Sniper Rifle made short work of them with Sneak Crits/Better Crits.

Edit - Unmodded - with AP Rounds.

I snuck into the middle of the quarry, climbed up onto a big pile of rocks and Gauss rifled them all. Worked wonders. This being at about level 14

The best thing is:

Armor piercing rounds
high damager per single shot weapon [sniper]
silencer
stealthboy
highground

DCs are quick and deadly nd have Damage threshold of 30 so everything that does 30 dmg will be shrugged off by them.

Sniper rifle for me does ~120 dmg per shot , more with silencer, i got handloader so i can get some nice hand made ammunition and cut through that DT easly and doing dmg to them

10 shots from 30 dmg weapon wont even scratch deathclaws even if the weapon has 400dps [miniguns svck vs them]
2-3 shots with low dps high dmg per shot weapon from sneak like sniper will get them quickly down.

I rain fireballs on them but I didn't wait until Level 22. I kept going back after getting more ammo and worked it.

Boone's using the All-American, ED-E has his upgraded laser and I'm on the Incinerator. I get up high on a rock and use the Incinerator as you would a grenade launcher. The grenade launcher itself doesn't have a lot of distance. First I angle the Incinerator way high so it has a good arc and then adjust and fire until there's a hit. Boone always asks "what's your problem" because he's a sniper and knows straight shots so he thinks I'm firing at nothing and wasting ammo. I have lots of flamer fuel and this weakens them and often does them in from a great distance. If they run out, Boone and ED-E get them.

Yeah I have to say that definitly gave me theimpossible feel the couple times I tried it with boone and ede. However, this last time I tried it I dind't have too much trouble. I just got on that ridge that goes up above the camp and worked my way around. Usually in stealth mode and using my gobi sniper rifle it wasn't too bad. Used lotsa ammo though. Also that mutation perk you get for killling alot of mutie beings is a nice help.

Cleared the place all alone at level 18. Use a sniping type weapon while sneaking and on top of that big tall structure in the middle, it is very easy.

I got there at level 10 by mistake with Veronica...There were like 3 running towards me and I partially saved one second before Veronica triggered them. I was pretty much [censored]. I tried every possible weapon I had - from shotguns to rifles to lasers and flamer / grenade luncher, I could barely get one to half life before I get my spine ripped. I tried to kill them like 4 times until I decided to RIGHT when I get to the saved spot I hit the fast travel and managed to escape. Not planning to go there any time soon, but the sneaking and sniping seems like a good idea. Definitely not going there yet, I'm still only level 12.

Using good tactics, the Mom and Alpha are actually the EASIEST to kill!!

Spoiler
Once you kill all the other DCs, sneak up the catwalk next to the conveyor belt, all the way to the top, then climb onto the conveyor belt, crouch down and start shooting - neither DC can figure out how to get to you to attack
