Is Destruction a viable main damage dealer?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 8:21 am

Title says it all. I keep hearing how underpowered Destruction magic is. Is there a way to make it more powerful without mods? I don't mind enchanting. At around what level does it start to be severely weak? Any tips to overcome that? Thank you.

Pure destruction can become very overpowered (especially when coupled with enchanting).
Using only destruction spells I can beat pretty much any opponent (Ancient Dragons, Dragon Priests, Draugr Deathlord e.t.c) on Master difficulty at level 61 without getting hit. If you throw in a few support/crowd control spells (summons, paralyze, calm/fear/frenzy, dragonhide e.t.c) and you can become extremely powerful.

I've havent had any problems with magic with my lvl 44 breton and with the cap at 50 im sure i wont have too many problems down the road. there are alchemy potions that will increase destruction magic damage for a short time. Also getting a secondary skill like conjuration or illusion for big crowds will help you focus fire the more important targets.

its weird how it works, it kinda powerful at first, then it kinda seems to be weak and after you get enchanting going and level up it gets a bit stronger again, it can be very powerful but it does lack some oomph, however the way i deal with is, is take the fire, frost and electrical augmentation perks and i lower the difficulty, that solves the lack of punch it has at mid to higher levels.

Personally I think the magic especially destruction could use some adjusting. My level is 10and I still find it kind of weak

It feels weak if you have low magicka and aren't using fortify destruction enchants. But if you do reduce magicka cost to 0 and use stagger perk it is one of the most op builds in the game, perma stagger a ancient dragon for example.

remember that all magic gets stronger the more you use it.

more magika, more magic perks at higher levels.

destruction can be a powerhouse at higher levels.

well.. this is your fault. at lvl 10 you really can't complain about the dmg from destruction.

I think it's fine overall, but it gets extremely weak at 40+ playing on Master.

I have a level 40 mage on expert and I think damage is adequate. If you use conjuration and alteration, the game is a cakewalk on Expert. I die sometimes because I don't use armor, but having two dremora lords and spamming thunderbolts with no magicka limitations plus impact allow you to take on any enemy without problems.

every skill set has the potential of being incredibly overpowered when you concentrate and start to max it out, regardless if they appear to be very weak at first.
