I was hunting for blue winged butterflys and thought to my self hey "use detect life" but apparently a butterfly is not alive or undead or any kind of life form. bummer

Probably a design choice. When using Detect Life in a City like Solitude, it can drag down Frame Rates. Can't imagine what it would do in a meadow full of butterflies, bees, ants and other bugs.

Also birds and slaughterfish are plants, while Nirnroots are not ;)

(The "green thumb" perk allows you to get two eggs form bird nests and slaughterfish eggs :hehe:).

Technicially, they are Organic Containers, in that they respawn. Nirnroots were not OCs in Oblivion, as they did not respawn, not sure what they are in this game.

Imagine if you use a "detect dead" spell and you find yourself glowing

If you think that bacteria and single cell organisms live almost EVERYWHERE, a detect life spell would light up the world like a light :P
Not sure if they even do have single cell organisms in Nirn

They have cheese, they have bacteria.
Or the Bones of the Earth do more than they are generally credited for.

All harvestable creatures are effectively moving plants. Weirdly, there was a bug noticed before release, at the playable demos, the whole game crashed when 'Command' was cast on a salmon.

Or use it in the mead hall @ Sonvgarde

Detect life or not, what gets me is that you can kill them wit any weapon, but magic has no effect. A dagger or war hammer will put two wings on the ground, but a flamethrower does nothing. Maybe I need to try another spell.

or arrows...

In fairness they weren't in Oblivion, either.

You can also jump on them and use them as a flying carpet and they can push you around.

In the CK they are flora and Nirnroot is a activator.

This is true. A torch bug picked my follower up over my characters head. We were standing in a swarm of them. They were clipping through the ground and picked her up the side of a building.
