Bood on the ice? Not familiar with that quest.... And I've never sat on a glitch anywhere.

Eh, well.... "sats" should likely have been "says" - and Blood on the Ice is one of the quest lines in Windhelm. It tends to bork the ability to buy Hjerim (the player-house in Windhelm). I couldn't say about it really - I dislike Windhelm in the extreme, and wouldn't ever want a house there.... I have lovely player-house mods now, don't need the vanilla pay-gobs-for houses.

I think some ppl are still haveing problem's with it.

I just did it again today, took about 2 hr's. Start quest....pause to answer phone.... talk on phone for 10 min ( work related)... unpause game.... puppy whining at door...pause game to take puppy out.... unpause game.... Phone ring's..pause game... husband, talk for 20 min... change battery in controller... almost finished quest...phone ring's pause game... work stuff, drag out laptop fix a scheduling issue... play game.... finish quest...turn off really warm xbox, eat lunch.

This would be the reason all my char's chop alot of wood....easy to do while talking on the phone.

I'm not sure you can blame Bethesda for that 'bug'.

Might not hurt to post it in the bugs forum anyway. Bethesda might send emails to your husband and the work contact explaining to them how important the game is and maybe send pizza and a dogsitter over. :P

If you know what to do, the quest is easy, works every time. When people do things out of order or forget a step, that's when it goes to hell. The quest is easy, you just have to do it correctly the first time.

This, really. Also, I wonder that so many people who do have troubles mention Calixto. I've never dealt with him on this quest.

For some it's not that easy. It never start's for some or they didn't notice that it had started and left the area and then they are S.O.L.

Which leads me to saying... When I did the quest yesterday, I said I had no problem's and in a strict sense that is correct. Here's the catch, Derik had only been to Windhelm ONE other time and then not even IN the "city". I mean that Literally, He found the city while running by doing another quest. Up on the bridge far enough to get the "found Wildhelm" and then ran off to Kynesgrove. Went in the opposite direction back to Riverwood.

I only happend to check the cemetary, because I wanted to make sure it had not started. weeeeell it had, so I had him do the quest because I want him to buy the house there. Guide and Wiki both say you have to enter 4 time's, for the quest to start. I don't know if that could be some ppl's problem's or not, which is why when I thought about it this morning I decided to post what had happened.

Might not hurt to post it in the bugs forum anyway. Bethesda might send emails to your husband and the work contact explaining to them how important the game is and maybe send pizza and a dogsitter over. :P

Pizza....yummy...pepperoni and mushroom? naaaa they might think I was serious, then my critter's would be outa kibble. All 4 of my poor doggies would go hungry...goat would miss her grain, chicken's, turkey's and duck's would all fly away thinking I hated them (no egg's  )... not to mention the cricket's for the lizard and Spider...Oh and Fishie food!!! Boy I think I'd have to share my pizza!

What do you mean by "I've never dealt with him"?
He's necessary to get the Necromancer's Amulet - if you don't want the amulet, then it's okay to not talk to him. But how do you finish the quest without Calixto's involvement? He's the reason the whole quest even started. And he's terribly bugged, especially in the last part when it he might suddenly become unkillable, effectively breaking the quest just before the end.
If you choose not to involve Calixto, the quest will just start again when you come back to Windhelm.

I visited his museum and took the 2-bit tour once. But he otherwise has nothing to do with the quest, despite the Wiki.
I talk to the guard.
I talk to the witnesses.
I talk to the guard again, who directs me to Jorlief.
I stop by Hjerim and gee, I need a key.
I talk to Jorlief, who says talk to Tova.
Tova's hubby says don't talk to Tova.
I talk to Tova anyway and get the key to Hjerim.
I investigate Hjerim by taking a flyer about the Butcher out of the box.
Quest updates: talk to Viola.
I talk to Viola, and voila! she sez talk to Jorlief.
I talk to Jorlief and for some reason mention an amulet.
Jorlief says we're gonna take down that wizard!
Jorlief grabs a guard and arrests the court wizard.
Mission accomplished.

Now what's this about Calixto? :meh:

Damn, you've got a lot of familiars. You some kind of vampire that's going overboard with the daytime guardians?

Yeah, I'm thinking he's only 'necessary' if you want the Necromancer's Amulet because I talked to him on my 1st character, but didn't read the walkthrough carefully and now I'm stuck with the Strange Amulet in his inventory. :P I didn't talk to him on my 2nd character because I followed what the ingame journal said and before I knew it Jorlief threw the Court Wizard in jail (too late to talk to Calixto at that point) and now I'm stuck with the Strange Amulet in her inventory, too. FWIW: I'm not a Necromancer on either so it's just an inventory annoyance. I got Dead Thrall on my chick just to mess with people, but I don't use necromancy as a battle tactic.

Court Wizard isn't the real killer.... go back to Windhelm. Don't read this if ya wanna figure it out yourself
Spoiler
Calixto is the real killer. If you've left the town someone else should be killed. Their should either be an option to talk to a guard and then the court wizard. Guide say's after 3 day's.

Damn, you've got a lot of familiars. You some kind of vampire that's going overboard with the daytime guardians?

Yep, you caught me!!!! Chicken's... In a good week they feed themselves with the egg's I sell to friend's. My husband also thought it would be a good way to have fried chicken...ummm nooooooooooo ain't pluckin no chicken's!!! ( did it enough as a kid)

And then you return to Windhelm after several days and find out the Butcher is still on the loose.
What for?
Because another quest leads you there, maybe? I know nothing forces you to go back, but if you don't want the rest of the quest to trigger then you can never visit Windhelm again.

For me the quest is not finished until I catch the real killer, but of course it's just my opinion.

I just made it shorter by buying the house after the Civil War, and then completing the rest in some 15 minutes or so.

There's nothing there. Get over it. It was the court wizard. Finding a scapegoat is the first maxim of law! Nothing else changes.

Well, actually, the first maxim of law is that the person reporting the crime is most likely the criminal. Work back from that. I did nothing but what the guards required.
