did i make a mistake getting this game at launch?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 2:33 am

I mean i love it, and have played every class, style, every way you can play, but thats the problem. Aside from a brief return to new vegas, this has been in my system since the 12th (ok, day after) ive used every weapon and armor combo, fought every fight, platinum, every location, know every dungeon, and now i have to ask myself: how much fun would a new questline or location make? Im thinking not much. Bottom line is im not blaming beth for lack of timely new content, im blaming me for buying game at launch and playing so damn much. I guess next time il wait a good 6 months. Thanks for listening.

No mistake, sooner or later you'd get bored of it and may come back some other time. I got it at launch too, I haven't really done any solid plays for months aside from general modding/testing and stuffs. just accept it, the series is like fine Wine, the more they age the better the taste...kinda

I think it's a good idea getting it sooner. Now that you've fully explored the game you can move on and play the many other games that are out. I got Skyrim on release but haven't fully experienced it. I'm being slow but also busy as well so not much time to play it. I still have many other games I want to play but Skyrim is consuming my time haha.

Maybe thats the problem. This is my first tes game. I really enjoyed fallout and new vegas and skyrim was so unexpectedly addicting, and without a single gun! Lol. Ive read so much about the rest of the series im sorry i didnt start with earlier games but now i know better. Longer you wait for a beth game, the closer you are to dlc. Oh, and a ps3 bug free game lol.

I have a few tips for you:

1 bethesdas dlc are always amazingly interesting (see shivering isles) so stick around the dlc will be worth it.

2 try to roleplay a little, it makes a huge difference.

Make a new character and have that character act very different from your own personality. You know the story by now so put your character in interesting situations that "may" have happened.

Example: my character is a very traditional nord and trusts the feel of steel in his hands far more than any of that fancy elven garbage. He only uses variations of iron/steel that he finds visually appealing. He does do smithing but only the lower end stuff, lv 60 and below.

Instead of using good enchantments he uses interesting enchantments. For example my main damage effect is that you get from the lunar forge. Worthless during the day but at night my steel blade glows green and sets fire to any enemy it touches.

Those books you see laying around? Pick some up and read them. Across all the elder scrolls games nearly the entire history of tamriel is recorded in those books. And all of it is mind-boggingly interesting:

If you never pick up a book you never realise that hermaus mora is a giant squid lord who guards an infinite library... Or the thing that interested me most: the dragon breaks. You will realise Just how interesting the universe of elder scrolls is after reading those books.

Oh and grab a copy of the lusty argonian maid. Its good for a lol.

There is so much more to this game than getting better weapons, raiding caves, and earning acheivements. Really dig into this game and find out everything about it, you will not be dissapointed.

Edit: for comparison if you have the strategy guide it is tiny in comparison to if it completely detailed the story of the world of skyrim. Heck a book of lore might be the size of your couch.
Those strategy

Chronic, im with you and agree. Ive read many of the books and even gone as far as googling lore that seems important. Roleplaying as someone unlike myself is a great idea but so hard to do. I will for sure try it cus thats different and i need that. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I've been playing since release. I'm retired, so back in November, I was playing 10-12 hours per day. It's been tapering of since then, and I only play 1-2 hours per day now.

Finished the Dark Brotherhood questline last night.

Only have the mages college and bards college left to do, and I'm trying to stretch those out to last till 15 May.

D3 will be released that day.

I'm very happy with Skyrim, it's a great game, and I'm nearing 600 hours with 5 characters, so I know I got my moneys worth. But after 15 May it will be D3 for years to come for me - at least I hope it will last years. D2/LOD has, I'm still playing that. No other games hold my attention like that. Even while playing WoW for almost 5 years (mostly in 80 hour per week sittings - even when I was still working), every so often I would take a day or 2 to play D2/LOD.

So, I understand what you're saying. And other players may disagree - but I think that's because we're different, and probably looking for different things in a game.

Welcome anytime friend. I was in the same boat as you back during oblivion. It takes a few playthroughs before that sweet spot for playing elder scrolls clicks in your head. But from that moment onward you will wonder how you ever played it differently.

Be sure to browse the imperial library website whenever you get bored, and happy adventures.

Eagle, love me some F-22 raptor also! Sweet icon. And our gaming hours mimic each other. Dont get to blast away like i used to, only because im less of a seasonal worker( was a longtime union bricklayer) reluctantly gonna have to shelf the current playthrough and find sumthin else. Will make me more patient for dlc anyway.

Oblivion you should like right away but Ill warn you morrowind is a whole different ball game. Its personally my favorite (and this is coming from someone who started with oblivion)

5 minutes into the game the gameplay and graphics will make you want to puke, but if you give it a chance and get through the first few mainquests it starts getting REALLY good.

Oh and grab the GOTY edition, you need to experience the bloodmoon my friend.

Depends on the system, if it's PS3 absolutely. I don't regret getting Skyrim at launch although I am second guessing myself due to all the bug issues.

Yep...sounds like you have a classic case of the burn outs. I try to take a break from it every few months, yet I always come back for moar!

Honestly, it sounds like you've played the heck out of the game because you like it. Therefore, you obviously made no mistake. Just take a break from it for a month or two. I burned out on Fallout 3 after playing it non-stop for three months. I took two months off and went back to it. It felt like it was brand new... and since I was familiar with the game, it was even better.

Yes, this is exactly the way I see it too. The OP did not make a mistake buying the game at launch, he just needs to take a break. I'm taking a break myself right now. But I'll be back in Skyrim soon. I intend to play this game for many, many years to come.

You guys are all really helpful and i thank you for the advice. Been on other less helpful boards. Ive seen enough of oblivion on youtube to know the graphics are....um...lacking but thats not a dealbreaker for me only because of skyrim. The lore, history, etc. Im gonna make a point of gettin it, and wearing it out like like skyrim. With maybe small breaks to hang with fawks, or cass, only cus i can put her in painspike.

Im on break for skyrim right now. Waiting till DLC is announced. Its sooo hard not to play. Im thinking about getting the witcher 2 or maybe dark souls to help my skyrim withdraws.

If you bought it 3 weeks after launch, played it for 6 months and then got bored of it, what would be the difference?

If you're on PC then you'll love what I have on store, though that is months off too. :(
