Did the patch really make Skyrim LAA?

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 12:10 pm

Hello,

I only ask this because ever since the patch hit and I stopped using the 4GB "mod" my RAM usage hasn't exceeded 2 GB, and, starting today, I've begun crashing randomly. I use several texture replacement mods, but they've never been a problem before today. I'm tempted to wonder if my GPU(GTS 450) is dying, as, also starting today, it can't do 1 GHz anymore, and I've been forced to drop it to base clocks to maintain any semblance of stability(The crashes still continue, though.). I did a CPU/RAM/cooling upgrade for Christmas, coming from an Athlon II X2 215 to a Phenom X4 9600 BE. I've overclocked it to 2.8 GHz, but it's been stable up until today. I have a 500W PSU; am I just running out of juice? No clue why it would start today, but...

Thank you so much for any assistance that can be provided.

Hmm, GTS 450 reference (not OC) can use ~180W at full load where as the Phenom X4 9600 BE uses ~150W. Should be OK unless your PSU is dying, or has a low amp for its 12v rail (assuming its a split rail). But upon looking at reviews dating back to 2008-2009 it seems the Phenom X4 9600 BE did have a problem with overclocking (TLB bug), along with all Phenom models that used B2 stepping. Download and install CPU-Z and make sure it doesn't say "Stepping: 2" (this the model from back in 2008) If it does, you may be out of luck as far as overclocking is concerned as it's confirmed unstable on that stepping.

Other things to try:
- Try re-verifying your Steam cache. Sometimes updates don't go through properly.

- Use a program like HWMonitor to verify the temperatures of your CPU and GPU while running Skyrim.

I don't know what they did but I am having hard freezes now that require use of the power button.

I am having crashes where I had none before..

For the first time I am really considering trashing the game.. It is really bad for the pc to shut it down that way.
This had never happened before.. My only problem was 2-7 second freezes...

Thank you for the reply.

My CPU does have B2 stepping, but Microsoft included a fix for the TLB error in SP1 of W7 and Vista. I've used a tool to disable said fix as it caps the CPU at 90% usage and disables my L3 cache(The error supposedly only occurs under rare circumstances. In all the reviews I've read even with the fix disabled Prime95 could be ran for hours on end without a hiccup. I was fine running Prime95 overnight with my overclock as well, and the fix disabled.), and I haven't had an issue before today... I'll try re-enabling the fix and seeing if that resolves it.

I re-verified the cache last night when some rock textures in the Rift weren't showing up. I also reapplied the texture pack that I was using. It was fixed after that, but I had to step down by GPU's clock to reduce artifacting(I even got a rainbow artifact.). GPU's always froze up for a second after first launching Skyrim, but it'd be fine after that.

Average Temperatures under load:

GPU - ~70C
CPU - ~60C

Thank you again for your assistance!

If you're using texture mods that could be the problem right there. On my system, and many others, when video memory gets exhausted in Full Screen the game can freeze your entire computer (even if usage says it's below the max, it's due to fragmentation). I have ~400 games installed on this machine, including a multitude of 2011 AAA titles, and Skyrim is the most unstable of them all. I've found using Windowed mode can solve this problem, and the ENB "AntiFreeze" patch 9 can also help too.

If you're using Skyrim HD - 2K Textures you'll most likely have to go down to the "Lite" version.

Stable currently with the TLB fix enabled, and I have my GPU clock back up to 900 Mhz(Still can't get back to 1 GHz, though.).

I'll try what you suggested if those issues come back.

And I have noticed that my video memory is all used when playing Skyrim, so that could be another thing...

Could upgrading my PSU and GPU fix this? I'm rebuilding my entire system in June, but I can get a headstart if needed and purchase the GPU and PSU within a week or two, if needed. I was thinking a Corsair 850W(In the steam window, currently, so no link on hand. It's the third highest rated desktop PSU on Newegg, currently.), and a GTX 570.

For PSU you want a single rail design. Corsair is decent, just make sure it's single rail.

If you like HD and Super-HD textures go for more VRAM. The GTX 570 only has 1.2GB versions where I'd go for at least 2GB. The GTX 560 Ti is a great performer and has 2GB versions.

I'd say it's more of matter between GTX 560 Ti 2GB or GTX 580 3GB right now, if you like Nvidia. GTX 570 is getting phased out anyway due to GTX 560 Ti 448 Core (which looks like a partially rebranded GTX 570 due to them selling poorly, just like what was done with GTX 470)

Just crashed again. Luckily I had just saved. I was using that patch you linked, too.

Here's the PSU I'm looking at: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009

If I read the specs right, it's single rail, yes? It should last me well into the future.

From what I've found, they don't make any 448 cores with additional memory, so I should go with this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130683

Oooo, I really like that card I linked. I wouldn't need a new PSU, so I could shave off ~$150 of my upgrading costs.... I may go with that.

Hmm, the 560 Ti isn't anything to sneeze at with full load, it can go up to ~285W. That combined with your processor is ~435W with both at full load and that's *before* you add in other devices -- that's not a lot of headway if you have a poor quality PSU. You should also check your PSU's specs for what its max amp is for the 12v rail.

I can't seem to find the box or the model... I'm in the middle of something right now, but after I'm done I'll see if I can find a product number or something on the PSU. IIRC it's Corsair and is 80+ Certified so it should be decent...
