Did You Hear The One About The High Barter Skill...

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:09 pm

I've never played the early Fallout games, so I don't know if this was possible, but has anyone been fooled by the Barter skill? I thought that you could actually manage the prices of what you buy and sell, then the AI determines whether it will accept the prices. (Dark Tower, anyone?) This would be tied to Charisma as always, but with a twist. Anyway, has this appeared elsewhere, and is it manageable?

Always been a passive skill, except for a few quests where you can use it to get more of a reward, (instead of 100 caps you could get 150 caps).
And it will pretty much be the same in New Vegas, but hopefully I can use the barter skill on every quest reward.
Or maybe convince someone to give me permanent discount.

Also there are times where you could use it to talk down the price of some items for quests.

There was only one instance where my maxed-out Barter skill came in handy, which was convincing Uncle Roe at Canterbury Commons to unionize the traders. That's the only advantage I'm seen from such a skill.

Well prices got lower and you could sell stuff for a little more as well.
But a lot of quests in fallout 3 depended on speech checks.
Should've been barter checks instead.

GASP. TWO goldfish. TRICKERY I SAY.

Ahem, I never found Barter that useful unless I had the Master Trader perk in any of the games to be honest :shakehead:

Barter is supposed to make the cost of items cheaper and you're items more value. The Original Fallout's this is more noticeable and the cap was not 100. Still I never really pay attention in FO3 because I never buy anything. It's all free and everywhere :D.

I noticed that bonus, but it seems like that was the only use for that skill. I believe that this skill was used to compensate for characters with low Charisma. Do you (all) concur?

I'm hoping that they bring that thing from Oblivion back so that I can really barter it up with them, hell, speech and charisma can both affect it's outcome as well.

Guess I'll just have to live with another fish being here.
But I'm Mr. Fish, you could be Sgt. Fish or Dr. Fish. (Yes this is kindergarten)

And this is really getting offtopic so let's stop here then shall we.

Barter skill, barter skill, barter skill...
I hope I can use it for hotel rooms as well, or maybe hokers.

And yes, Barter-ing with goods is the meaning of the word, so if you have something another person sees as valuable (Jet, Buffout) then that form of trade should be viable.

I usaully just skip this skill:P But I have put some points on their every once and a while. It just lowered prices a lilbit and raised the price of what I was selling But with you idea I don't really like it since the npc could refuse your price.

I'm hoping that it has been tweaked for NV. Barter in Fallout 1 was really messed up. I'd have to dig out my old save game to be sure, but I remember that I had around a 30 in barter skill and I could buy something from and turn around and sell it for more than I paid for it. Fallout 3 was a little better in that even at 100 barter skill you couldn't do that (except for the exploit). But coming into a fortune of caps was way to easy in Fallout 3.

I'm playing it again right now before NV is released. I'm using a mod that tweaks the barter by increasing the buy price of everything by 75%. The sell price is unchanged, it just effects the prices you pay. Even with that mod, I'm only at level 4 and with a 14 barter skill, I have a small fortune of caps and plenty of junk to sell. There has to be a better way of balancing the barter/caps system so you don't get rich so easily.

Paradoxicaly, you would think if you were going to max out Barter early on you need high str to lug all the extra loot you theoreticaly needed to lug around to make up for your week combat skills.

a "trader/scavenger" character in FO 3 in theory would have been Barter, repair, and speach. FO 3s problem seemed to be that it did not realy matter what you did you would have enough money stimpacks and ammo to wallpapper your house in about 5-10 levels.

Indeed. Having near infinite supplies aided towards godlike characters almost as much as the bucket load of perks, 100 in all skills and very high SPECIAL did. Even the radiation mechanic was a non-issue because of how much RadAway was around. Ive played several characters up to max level in Fallout 3 and the only time ive gone over 200 Rads is for the Wasteland Survival Guide quest.

That's the idea. It would be the same as a Speech check, but for the Barter skill. If you fail, maybe you'd have to make some "donations" to get relations back to normal (Spore fans out there, w00t.)
