directional sound only emitting from facing speaker?

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 4:10 am

Not exactly sure if this is a game related problem or not, but is has been bugging me a lot.
I've my system setup for a 5.1 sound set that's correctly configured and works correctly in test scenario's and in other games.

Directional sound only seems to be coming from the facing speaker and doesn't seem to be spread out over all speakers.

A good example, when I'm facing the person who is talking to me, I'm hearing (his/her) the voice "only" coming form the center speaker. When I turn my head to the left it shift fully to the right speaker. It doesn't feel like it's being spread out over multiple speakers. This feels really odd. The voice should be coming from all speakers only weaker in volume from those that are not facing the sound source.

Anything I could do to fix this?

i think it's some sort of wonky 5.1 implementation or something along those lines. someone told me they have better results playing with 4.0 selected. the problem is really noticeable if you run around in 3rd person, you can't really discern any of the audio queues and people talking is just messed up. I've gotten into the habbit of going to 1st person when I'm near a conversation. very annoying.

I'm having audio issues too. On the sticky for the 1.1 update, there's a note about audio issues. Try this:

If you're having sound issues, such as static during NPC dialogue
1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Sound 2. In the Playback tab, right click on Speakers (or whatever has a green tick next to it), then click Properties 3. In the advanced tab on this new window, select 24 bit, 44100Hz (Studio Quality) in the drop down menu

I have a 7.1 set-up. I haven't played the game again since making these changes but hopefully this resolves the issue for us.

I set the game to quad surround and it's much better I think.

Great to hear you are experiencing no problems with your 5.1 sound setup, however that doesn't necessarily mean that has to be broken on my end (hardware/drivers).
"Fix or upgrade your crap" feels kind of an insult.

Thanks, I'll have a look and see if this changes anything.

Would the previous possible fix not solve it, I'll have a look at quad sound setup and see if this is an improvement.
However, I don't recall seeing any options in game that allowed me to adjust the audio setup. But I'll have an other look, else I'll simply put my speaker setup in windows to quad speakers.

you cannot use a Digital connection such as Coax or optical/Toslink with this game to get anything more than 2 channel audio....

The only digital output that allows 5.1 sound from this game is using an HDMI audio connection that is compatible with PCM Lossless audio output.... Otherwise your screwed and can only use a MATRIXED surround mode available to your amp.... Pro Logic II/IIx in movie/music/game modes.

Checked my audio settings, but it was already correctly set, changed it and reset it just to make sure.
I also tried changing my sound setup to quad speakers and here I could hear directional sound coming from the non facing speakers but it was really faint, to soft to actually correctly hear what was going on or hear what was spoken.

Repeated it all again with my 5.1 settings, but there I only hear the sound coming from the speaker that is facing the sound source, non of the other speakers seem to broad cast the same sound only at a lower volume.
