Disable music in ini's?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:32 pm

Since I turn my music off anyway for immersion's sake does anyone know exactly which files to change in the ini's to disable it completely? I was going to play with them a little but if someone already knows what to change without screwing up my sound effects or anything else I need I thought I would ask first. Just wanted to try it this way and see if I possibly get a slight performance increase since I"m not using it anyway. Thanks.

I don't play Skyrim on PC but for Morrowind and Oblivion there was a music folder with MP3's in it, when you moved the MP3's out of the folder they wouldn't play ingame. Don't know if it actually increased performance though since a music script or something might still have been running. I'm 90% sure Skyrim has a music folder aswell.

Thanks. Actually Skyrim is using a different format for music this time and I wanted to see if there was a way to disable music completely so the script isn't running. May be a possible game breaker but since I have a complete backup of my game I just wanted to try disabling it completely to see what happens. Thank you for trying though.

Just move the slider all the way to 0 for the music and it is off. I am sure we can come up with a more difficult way to do this, but the slider is how I do it.

Yeah, I have already done that of course. I was just curious as to whether that actually stops the music from actually running and using resources. I think all that does is turn the music down so you can't hear it at all rather than completely disabling it. It's not like my game is lagging or I am having performance issues but if I can disable something I am not using anyway it seems like there should be some sort of slight performance boost. Basically I am trying to find a way to stop the music script from running at all even in the background just to see what effect it has on performance, if any. I read a post where someone was wondering this same thing and it made me curious as to exactly how much of a difference it makes without any resources at all being used for music.

Little update on this - There is someone on the Nexus who informed me that they were working on a mod that does exactly this and they claim that is does have a surprising effect on performance by disabling it completely rather than just turning the music down to 0. Not sure how accurate this is since I haven't been able to try it yet but I am going to give it a shot once it is completed to see.

In past games, turning it down to 0 turned the music all the way off. I don't thing there are any stray scripts now as back in Morrowind, if the music was set to 0, the game became unstable as it was expecting the music to play. Now, we can set it 0 and it is stable.

It would be curious if this had any effect, but music playing is just about the least intensive thing a game can do these days.

After talking to the person on Nexus claiming that it makes such a drastic difference I am really wondering about this too. Like you say, I don't see how it could make as much difference as they say it does but I am curious. Once the mod is complete or I find another way to do this myself I will let you know the results. They say they have managed to do it in their game and had much faster loading times and improved fps and that they are in the process of making a more user-friendly way of doing it.

My recollection is that in Oblivion it did make a difference. I've no idea though if that's still true in Skyrim.

It seems like freeing up extra resources should have some effect. Kinda just waiting for the mod to be finished so I can give it a shot. I was going to attempt to do it myself but there is a good chance I would just screw my game up.
