Display name change

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 12:33 am

I wasn't sure where to ask this (or whom to ask, even), and its been a while since I've been here. But with Skyrim coming out soon, I expect I'll be practically living here like I used to. The thing is, I noticed my display name is both A: rather old (I go by a different one now for nearly every place else) and B: obnoxiously long. So I thought it wouldn't hurt to see if I could get it changed to the shorter version I go by now without having to scrap my long-time account altogether.

You'll probably have to make a new account. Admins only change upper/lower case or one letter typos.

Unfortunately, they won't let you change it. I know how you feel though. :sadvaultboy:

I think there should be a system in place for name changes, maybe if you have a certain amount of posts, maybe something like 5,000+. I say this because I'd like to add a couple words to my name. :P

Yeah, I figured that was the case (I knew it certainly used to be when I hung out around here a lot more), but thought I'd check anyways.

I think they should look at how many years someone has been here. I think it's pretty rare to find someone who still wants to use a username they made when they were 13 five years later.

Is there even a valid reason why they don't let people change display names? Seems silly to me.

There's even a display name history on everyone's profile page, so I don't understand why it isn't something easier to do. I think the main stumbler is it is an admin-only power right now, but that should be grantable to mods.

Indeed. I know Neowin allows it, though they do restrict it to twice per every six months or so, I believe. Pretty sensible, in my opinion.

I would think one name change after three years would be fair. I'm not sure about letting us switch them multiple times though.

I would love to be able to switch my name, instead, I have to spam the forums with a new profile........... I mean, post meaningful and helpful posts.....

Yeah, I don't want to have to start up a new one. I have over 2000 posts of either being helpful (I hope) or asking far too many question in the Oblivion modding section.

I'm embarrassed by my name. I'd start a new account, but my post count on this one is pretty high.

If it's important to you, then that's your only option. I had 6,000+ posts on my old account before I made this one, for a name change of only a couple letters difference.

When I first joined, many years ago, I tried to pick 'EvilFish' as my username. It told me this was taken and so I used 'EvilFish1'. Now I see a guy in the Skyrim forums called 'Evilfish'. :stare:

I guess the original pre-'05 EvilFish was deleted in one of the purges, freeing up the name, and unfortunately I didn't request a change in time.

My suggestion? Don't worry too much about your username. If you post regularly, then it's not likely to be the thing that defines you.
