Distracting an enemy.

I play primarily as a sneak character and there's something that's always bothered me about the Elder Scrolls series when it comes to stealth. Perhaps some of you guys have an answer or a technique that I've never thought of.

Often times there are a number of enemies that I need to get by that I'd simply rather not fight. I'd just like to sneak by them. However, they may be in a spot in which it is impossible to do so, unless I use an invisibility potion I guess. What I'd really like to do, and this could be used for a number of things, is be able to distract NPCs.

What I wish we could do is pick up objects and throw them, causing a distraction on the other side of the room and allowing the player to sneak by without a fight. I realize there's no way to throw anything but are there other ways, or is there a way to do something similar?

Sounds like you'd really like the shout Throw Voice.

I always used this. But before I had the shout I just shot something off a table with an arrow on the other side of the room and had to be quick.

There is a shout called throw voice that sends a taunt where you are targeting that enemies fall for.

You can shoot an arrow at a wall in the distance, paralysis poisons, or...summon a familiar with Quiet Casting.

You can fire an arrow past an enemy so that it hits the wall, they will investigate the noise and will eventually start looking for whoever shot the arrow (You). I use it all the time on non-sneaking character that use Archery because it can put them at a greater distance away from you. Throw Voice works just as well and it uses less arrows.
