DLC to be made by Bethesda instead of Obsidian?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:07 pm

In an http://planetfallout.gamespy.com/articles/interviews/1883/Planet-Fallout-Interview-Chris-Avellone Chris Avellone has this to say concerning DLC:

Where do you see the Fallout series going in the next years?

No idea, up to Bethesda. They are planning for DLC, I don't know the specifics for that yet, though.

Does this means that the decision to have DLC is up to Bethesda but if they say yes than it will be made by Obsidian, or is Bethesda doing the DLC themselves?

Personally I wouldn't like Bethesda doing it as FO3 wasn't that great and it seems kind of disrespectful of Obsidian if they can't do DLC for their own game.

Maybe it's like it's up to Bethesda to give that thumbs to to do them.
They allowed them to do a game, but maybe they need to wait for Bethesda to give the thumbs up for them to do DLC's as well.
Cause who knows, maybe Bethesda for some reason doesn't want any DLC's for it.

Whilst the decision is up to Bethesda they are busy with their own projects so if there is any DLC it would be done by Obsidian. Nothing has been announced and until it is, everything is pure speculation.

I asked this in the Podcast Questions thread about an hour ago. Odd coincidence...

But anyway, I don't think it means anything more than "Bethesda is planning to allow us to make DLC but we don't know the specifics, such as how many DLC packs we can do, quite yet." I doubt Bethesda would develop the DLC themselves as they have two projects they're working on themselves, and I don't think they want to add even more things to their plate. But of course, this is just what I think, who knows what the reality is.

Personally I wouldn't like Bethesda doing it as FO3 wasn't that great and it seems kind of disrespectful of Obsidian if they can't do DLC for their own game.

Regardless of your opinions of the game, keep in mind that if Bethesda never made Fallout 3, Obsidian would never have gotten the opportunity to make New Vegas, let alone DLC. I think Bethesda has every right to tell them what to do with the game if they want to.

That said, I don't like the idea of Obsidian not making their own DLC either but I feel that Bethesda wouldn't do that. At the most Bethesda may choose the locations for them, but I really doubt they wouldn't let Obsidian develop the DLC themselves.

My thoughts exactly. Fallout 3's DLC needed more development time in the rare cases it deserved to be developed at all.

I liked all of them, and yes I've played FO1/2. Arguably better then my own mods.

He's referring to Bethesda as the publisher for the game... not to be confused with Bethesda Game Studios, the guys that developed Fallout 3.

About what I figured, but it is nice to have confirmation one way or the other. Thanks!

I think we already know there will be DLC, however, it's possible that Bethesda will be in control of what sort of DLC is made for the game.

But it sounds to me like Bethesda would decide how many DLC packs are released for the game, and some of the overall things like how big they should be, maybe what they're about, and such, and that would make sense to me, after all, if Bethesda is letting Obsidian develop the game, it would seem odd that they would not let them do the same for DLC, but as the game's publishers, they might want to maintain some degree of control over what Obsidian does in terms of expanding the game. Certainly since they have the license and are publishing the game, I'm sure they could maintain as much creative control over the DLC as they want, unless they have a contract with Obsidian specifically stating otherwise, the only question is how much freedom they are willing to give Obsidian.

More than likely Bethesda, owning the IP already has a list of plots and stories or locations that they want this game to have. Some are probably better as a DLC, some are better as an expansion, some are better suited for a full fledged game. So, it is probably a combo of what story or plot to have, how many DLCs to have and what should be reserved for Fallout 4 (who ever is going to make that).

I would imagine that the schdule for DLC release will be determined after the initial sales push. For example, if people keep buying the game in droves for months, then why release a DLC too early? I would wait until sales start to taper off before offering up a DLC if I was the publisher.

Why would Bethesda make DLC for Obsidian?

That's like EA making DLC for BioWare...

I think what it means is that they have to make a deal with Bethesda Softworks(publisher).

I'm thinking it will be made by obsidian, he just meant that it's up to bethesda whether or not they make some, which they are, some article, (forgive me I couldn't find it, it's on the wiki I'm sure) was a preview where they showed the main menu and there was a DLC option

Raising the cap was one of the major reasons for unbalancing the game.
It was utter and complete crap. (IMO)

You could pick 10 more perks and all the high level (lvl20) perks.
You could max out a crapload of skills.
You got 100+ more health.
Unbalanced much?

Before Broken Steel you could get a god character, but it required some planning and effort. With Broken Steel, every character with Intelligence > 1 became a god character, with ridiculous bullet sponge enemies thrown in as "challenge". Well, atleast the new locations and equipment were cool, but it sure lived up to it's name :lmao:

I must disagree. Fallout 3 was a great game, the best in my opinion. However I believe Obsidian would make there own DLC. However I believe since Beathesda has rights to 'Fallout' then it is indeed up to them.

I read Obsidian is going to be working on a new game after this. Then again, they were able to fit AP in with FNV, so they probably split their team to handle multiple projects, including DLC if it happens.

I'm hoping for 3 massive DLC's from Obsidian, instead of 5 smaller ones. Not sure how that translates to more sales, as they'd have to charge more, and possibly alienate some hesitant fans, so maybe 5 $10 each DLC's is better than 3 $20 each DLC's. Better yet, make the DLC's each the size of Point Lookout, and open ended too.
