I run a Nord warrior in almost all the TES I've played, also a wood elf hermit ranger. In Skyrim my wood elf is the nastiest Thalmoor slayer ever.

Oddly, I've no desire to play a Nord. I prefer playing my Khajit who doesn't give a flying leap about "Nord traditions". :stare:

I think Nord and Imperial fit the bill for dragonborn. The Imperials are technically nords. And all races of man came from Atmora (Im not sure about Redguards I think they came from Atmora but did not land in skyrim but where they are from.) so I dont doubt that a redguard could be dragonborn either. I would think a breton would be less likely on account of the elven blood in their vanes so polluted human blood less likely dragonborn.

Redguards came from Yokuda, not Atmora. And technically, any race can be Dragonborn, they just hold the most cultural significance for Nords and Imperials.

I actually never feel right not being a Dunmer in any TES - although in Oblivion I never used them because they were too fruity.

Not at all. In fact I'm hell bent on developing long term characters with all the races!

Why don't you try avoiding the main quest and try RPing as another race?

This.

As I said at the beginning of the thread, I only play Dunmer and Khajiit. But one of the great things about the Elder Scrolls is that any of the races can easily fit into the role of Nerevarine, CoC, or Dovahkiin. it isn't written for one specific race, and it's the players own proclivities and ideals that decide if a given character has to play a certain role in these games.

My Dunmer and my Khajiit stomp mudholes in Nords, Thalmor, Dragons, pretty much anyone that crosses their paths. They're Dovahkiin because of their Dragon Soul, not because of a certain race.

The Lore states: The Dovahkiin is an individual with the Soul of an immortal Dragon inside of a mortal body. Nowhere does it mention a specific race tied to being Dragonborn.

It feels so right to play as any I like. I played as a non Nord not just to try it.

And that was a terrible reference to Katy Perry's early single many probably still remember.

I have Khajiit and Argonian. It doesn't feel strange at all because they both fit with the story. Why should it be only a Nord who is Dragonborn?

Surprisingly though, Khajiit often live on the edges of society but thee two places I would expect to see more Khajiit is in both the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood but if I recall, neither of them have a khajiit member. Also, only the Dark Brotherhood has an Argonian, the Thieves Guild does not.

The DB has plenty, you just don't get to talk to them. On my Orc character alone, I've been attacked by over 10 DB assassins, with 4 being Khajiit females, and 3 being Argonian females. The rest were Dunmer, lolz. Also, my female High Elf mage has been assaulted by around 8 DB assassins, with similar demographics to the ones attacking my Orc. As long as you just keep traveling the roads and do NO Fast Travel, they'll keep throwing themselves at you. It's quite entertaining actually...though very pathetic on Astrid's part.

I find it great that if you just keep playing without getting into every guild, the game is more mysterious and interesting for you, because the guilds seem more powerful and exclusive. I know this because my main character is in them all, and it seems really ridiculous....just like in Oblivion.....

In Morrowind I played preferred playing a Dunmer. Except when I made a character to play Bloodmoon, he was a Nord.

In Oblivion I seemed to have more freedom on race, though I liked my Imperial characters better.

In Skyrim, yeah I feel a little odd not playing a Nord, especially if I do the civil war quests. While a non-Nord should be ok with the Empires side, I generally feel that a non-Nord wouldn't really care much about the civil war and most of them just don't do it.

Current character = Female Redguard Archer in Light Armor.

Only for the MQ.

It would feel weird to have an Argonian dragon born.

I have only done three characters so far.

One is my main character, he is a Nord.

The other is my brother's character, he's a Nord as well.

the third was an imperial. It felt a bit wierd, but I haven't done the main quest on that one so it's ok.

the fourth was a Kajhiit. It felt stupid to be an icon of Nord legends when you weren't even a Nord....

I started playing Bretons in Morrowind because of the magic bonus & the associations with medieval literature. I've never really played as one of the beast races as I find it more difficult to relate to them. Imperials I've played once or twice, as well as Kherans (a Morrowind race developed by Whestly) because of the cool transformation scripted by Fliggerty and the underwater bonus.

My Oblivion and Skyrim characters were Bretons too. I don't think I'd play as a Nord as I find them too war-like in TES lore.

That it just doesn't feel right playing Skyrim as another race than a Nord?
I dunno but after I've got my Imperial till lvl 81.5, I just didn't feel as if I'd like him as my Maincharacter in Skyrim. Although I'm very pleased about him and I've spent a lot of work with the character, I still needed to make a nord character.

Your thoughts?

yeah, but only if you're heavily into the lore.

the same applies to Morrowind and Oblivion for me, as I felt obligated to play both a Dunmer/Imperial respectively in both games to suit their appropriate provinces (and because it obviously makes the most sense lore-wise).

I am Argonian on all three games, and to me it does feel weird to be another race

This, and the whole very Nord-centric feel of the game makes playing a race other than Nord that much more interesting for the main story. All these Nords and their strong sense of pride and tradition, then BAM! random non-Nord ends up being this generations Dragonborn.

I used Redguards most of the time: they're versatile (even before I eventually switched to a mod that allowed me to customize starting stats), they're are neutral regarding the empire/skyrim war and have good reasons to hate the Thalmor. Not to mention that the scimitar and the Alik hoods look really cool.

Got the feeling too. My first playthrough i felt inclined to be a Nord because of the character template we were shown in trailers and such and due to the fact that being the hero of a strong traditional race as an Argonian etc just seems weird. Although i do play as Argonians (my favourite race  ) i tend to sidestep the main quest and make him an adventurer or something similar.

I think when they wrote a lot of the lines for the game, they had a nord in mind. They could have done a few things like being occasionally stopped and questioned by a guard in Windhelm if you're an Argonian not at the docks or a Khajiit in any city. Not like prevent you from doing anything in particular because of race, but having to explain to a guard every once in a while while in Whiterun that you're actually doing work for Balgruuf/Farengar (for example), or someone in town going "What's an argonian doing roaming around here?" could have added a lot of flavor with very little effort.

Maybe even given each race a quest (could even be a simple radiant quest) that involves certain dialogue specific to each race?
