Does anyone else think that each race should start with a un

Post » Sat Jul 14, 2012 9:59 am

Not just the main mage races?

For example

Argonian- Candle Light

Bosmer- Raise Zombie

Imperial- Lesser Ward

Khajit- Courage

Nord- Frostbite

Orc- Bound Sword

Redguard- Stone Flesh

Meh, they don't really all fit, but I think most races that have any boost to a magic school should atleast start with a spell. Imperials, Redguards, and Argonians all get bonuses but no spells.

Yea races that have boosts to magic skills should have a unique spell, like in oblivion.

makes no sense for all of 'em to have starter magic, in fact, no race should get a starting spell at all and we should go to an altered daggerfall's character creation

Not really since some races aren't suited for magic use.

Not really. While every race is capable of using magic, not all of them are culturally inclined to do so. Even the basic spells shouldn't be available to all races: most Bretons know some magic, but your average Nord probably never tried to cast a spell in his life, so why would he start out with Flames?

I'd give a starting spell to Altmers, Dunmers and Bretons. Maybe to Argonians and Bosmers. Everybody else would need to buy them later.

I thought some races did start out with a few spells. I created a Breton character the other day that already knew Conjure Familiar.

I wouldn't say that any character should start with a spell. Not even all Altmer would be mages.

See: Racial powers.

I know they don't use magicka and function differently, but they are essentially spells.

Not all races are spellcasters, though.

No, the abilities are better, such as the Nord's resistance to frost etc. etc.

Most of them do have spells anyway, Nord's have Battle Cry, with is effectively a fear spell. Don't know about the other races but I'm pretty sure their racial powers are all just basically spells.

Indeed. I think it would be strange if races with no culture for magic started with extra spells.

No race should have starting spells, but there should be some tomes around the starting place, for everyone who doesn't want to use weapons.

just so people know what daggerfall's way was: in daggerfall you could go through a little quiz or make your character yourself, you got to change your reputation right off the bat, handle perma buffs/debuffs (things like weaknesses or speical abilities, thing syou might get at birth or through your adventures) and you would get starting items, my silver dagger comes to mind but magic and even armour is also included in what you could potentially have at the start

like i said, daggerfall's system edited a bit would be the best solution

None of those make any sense whatsoever lore-wise. Though I'm guessing you made those choices based on "cool factor" and not lore.

No, I don't think they should start with a unique spell, but I would like them to be more "unique" in other ways (like via more diverse attributes and skill bonuses). But that ain't gonna happen.

See powers column.

Not really a big deal that some race has to forgo spending 30 gold on a spell at the start of the game.

Slightly like Fallout 3 and NV with it's exam and doctors questions.

Good point. I often forget about a lot of these bonuses, since many of them are once-per-day.

Add my name to the list of people who think characters shouldn't have any starter spells. There is already a spell tome in Helgen, but they could add another one from a different school.
