Does anyone else do this?

I always found it fun when monsters fought each other. I always would of activated those cheats "iddqd" and "idkfa" which I memorized by heart. Then, I would get in-front of one of those demons(monsters) and another would accidentally attack it. Therefore causing them to fight each other. Especially in those levels where the Cyberdemon was. So fun! :twirl:

Delta-Quit-Delta... yes. I remember infighting was one of the ways you beat both the Cyberdemon and the Spider Mastermind when they were in the same room.

No, I never actually thought of that but that's a good idea. But here's what I would do: I'd spawn like a bunch of monster in a locked room and then from a safe distance unlock the door, unleash hell and run. It was fun...

Yes, I can't remember the levels names but I remember 1 level. That starts with you spawn in a middle of a room and around you are many doors. In one of the rooms there is a Cyberdemon plus many Barons of Hell (The pink goat things) and the easiest way to pass that level is to make them fight each other.

That's Map 8, Tricks and Traps and I do the same thing. That's probably the only way to get out of there alive. :P

Ah... memories.

I was thinking of "Gotcha!" when I was talking about the Mastermind and Cybie (yes, I call him Cybie. I'm not ashamed of that). Of course, Tricks and Traps was basically just an insanely hard version of the principle. I was always wondering what all those Barons were doing in the same room with a cyberdemon. Waiting for you?

That's what I told when describing my favorite aspects of DooM. I can't remember the details, in one level, I opened a door or entered a room and there were like 10-15 demons and one biggy in front of them, it was like a classroom and big demon was like the teacher. Teacher didn't notice me. I couldn't resist and fired twice, randomly... A couple of them returned to me and started firing and then biggy started but it was shooting front row and then 1 second later, they were all shooting each others, 5 seconds later it was only biggy left, I fired my third bullet, it died. :) ME:  It should be Doom 95, but can't remember, I must imagining half of it for sure.

Level 8 really? I would've guess a higher level. Also I never really completed the game on any higher difficulty then Easy. I always used cheats. :P

The second person to mention Tricks and Traps in this thread! Group favorite, it seems.

I take it you mean Map 8 of Doom2? I think there is a couple of invincibility orbs in that level. One of them being the very room were the cyber demon and demon barons are, IIRC.

So you were "Too Young To Die" back then, huh? :P

Yep, there are at least two. But if you jump into the fray without letting the cyberdemon thin out the herd for you, you're not likely to last very long. I used them to finish off the cyberdemon or any remaining barons, however it played out.

Indeed, I usually do, but if I'm in a tight spot I bring out the BFG 9000 just for those occasions. :D

Out of curiosity, are there any Doom mods that allow you to bind other controls to a joystick? Like a map button and switch to next or previous weapons? It seems Doom Collectors edition thankfully has support for anologue controllers, but only support for 4 basic buttons.

Check out the source ports http://www.zdoom.org/ and http://www.doomsdayhq.com/, they may have better support.

On topic, it's useful way to save ammo, and there were levels other than Tricks and Traps that pretty much required using that tactic. Have you seen the super secret level of Plutonia Expirement on Ultra Violence? There isn't enough ammo in the game to kill them all :ahhh:

If you say you don't do monster infighting and have got past map08 in Doom 2 is either a cheater or a liar or an ammo waster.

Deliberately causing and taking advantage of infighting is not unusual when you are doing competitive speed runs. There are places where the pro speedrunners use infighting in doom2.wad but its not essential to just get through the level. Some pwads are designed to expect/require you to do it however. Off the top of my head, at least some of Anders Johnsen's maps in Alien Vendetta are like this and you don't even have enough ammo to make it through if you don't. Av.wad (Alien Vendetta) is by no means the only pwad like this.

Huh, that's interesting. It was always a fun thing to do, but I didn't realize it was exploitable to that degree.

Cyber-Demons and Barons? Ha! If I can get a Marine to shoot an Imp in the back I feel I've done my good deed for the day!

On really busy maps I sometimes like to back myself into a corner with my chainsaw and hold down the fire button. Anything that gets close gets torn up and anything else starts its own fight.

Here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrArnwyKxmY <--- 480p max resolution, should be fullscreened

Alien Vendetta Map 6, the Ultraviolence maxkill record - - the map is meant for you to use infighting at the optimal times. There is a time when you will see the player switch to fists, run behind some mobs and swing into the air and move out of the room, and then a moment later come back in and circle without firing - - that's all infighting related. Infighting gets used again later in the run too, that's the first big time tho.

The player who made the run is Anders Johnsen who is well among the best in the world at speedrunning and also deathmatch.

This thread and this forum is really pure nostalgy on the the first modern game I ever played (DOOM2) and the second (DOOM).

I remember in doing this in tips or trick (is it possible without, and do you even have enough ammo without it).

In the level with the cyper-deamon and the spider mastermind (around lvl19 if I remember correctly) I was very surprised, when I realised that the mastermind would actually kill the cyperdeamon, which still seems like the baddest monster I ever fought.

Besides that on lvl30 I have from time to time set IDDQD and watched all the creatures fight, it's quite entertaining to see the hoarde of spawning monster fight each other and see who beats who.

I think you got it wrong. Cybie wins out an even 99% of the time, really.

Maybe it depends on where you stand. When I played I always hid behind the platform with cyberdeamon, so the mastermind maybe started shooting before the cyberdeamon, because I have never seen the cyperdeamon win that fight.
