Does everyone have that menu problem?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:00 am

I play on PC. When I access the menu and move my cursor over the options (like "load game" and/or "save game") the cursor bugs out. It's like the game is reading a bunch of data and all I am doing is moving my cursor over different parts of the menu.

This has happened since the first time I ever started up Skyrim, and it's really not a problem, it's just annoying as ____.

I was wondering if everyone has this problem? Does anyone know why this happens? Is it the same on console? Thanks in advance for any and all input.

Yeah, it happens on my PC too. Mouse control on the PC is a bit borked. I have the issue you describe and also, when I try to choose from the list of choices at a merchant (i.e., weapon, armor, potion etc), sometimes the mouse click doesn't register. Especially with the MISC choice - clicking on that pops me out of the menu. On ocassion, I select the wrong dialogue choice, even though I had my desired choice highlighted when I clicked the mouse.

In addition sometimes some of my keyboard key pushes don't register during battles. I sometimes have to push the Z key (shout) several times before it finally registers.

I've had all of these since Day 1 and none has been fixed in any of the patches.

All "lovable" quirks of a great game, but annoying none-the-less.

I'm not smart enough to know why this happens, and I don't play on consoles, so I can't speak to that.

I find I have to be pretty precise with my cursor placement when clicking on certain things in menus. Aside from that, I have no major problems.

Yep, does that on mine and I play PC. It's loading the screen shot save picture, and makes it stop for a sec as you move over every different savegame, because they all have pictures. I wish you could turn that feature off.

Hmm.. I wonder if it'd be simple enough for them to patch out the screen shot or make having the screen shot an option one could click "off" if desired. I suppose it's no big deal.

I also have the problems discussed about inside vendor menus and dialogue options. Exiting from the vendor menu does happen more often when choosing "MISC" and also the further to the left side you click on the text options. And dialogue is a pain. I have to often scroll over a dialogue option I intend to NOT choose so that it gets highlighted and then scroll over my intended choice just to make sure that I choose the correct option. What a pain in the keester.

There are also problem when I do enchanting using the mouse scroll wheel. I will enter into the enchanting table in first person view and then I will scroll down the list (which is the same mouse action as zooming out in 3rd person) and the view will sometimes (but not always) switch from 1st person to third person. And so now when I scroll up or down the enchanting menu I am also zooming in or out. It doesn't really matter, it's just annoying, but it's not an enjoyment-breaker for me. It also happens at the alchemy table.

I find using the keyboard works best to mitigate these problems, but I've never really tried it when I am saving or loading a game.

i'm on 360- and, almost everytime at the start of any menu, when i go to use the left control thumb to highlight different lines, it sticks.

i, literally, have to wrench towards a direction to get it to move up and down.

I find if I highlight the one above or below and then go back to the one I want it works 75% of the time.

It's simple, really. They developed Skyrim primarily so it would be easier to use on simple console controllers, since that was their aimed-for primary player base. Mo' money there, ya know? The unfortunate by-product of that, is that they neglected to do a very good job of porting the console-control system over to keyboard and mouse. Hence all the glitches and poor design choices (from a keyboard/mouse standpoint). I've generally not played many console-centric games before, so I'm not used to a PC game's controls being so seriously lame and F'ed up, as they are in Skyrim. Sign of the times, I guess.

Yeah, mouse is useless in menus. Especially the dialogues, it will select wrong option more often than not. But that is why i use the keyboard for everything possible.

Too many save games in your savegame folder. Skyrim is trying to read the preview images from each one. Easy fix is to back up your savegames somewhere else and only keep a few in that folder.
Also, if you wait long enough on the screen, the game will eventually catch up and smooth out.
It's not just the cursor, you can also see that the background smoke on the screen is moving really choppy while this is going on.
