Is it me or does skyrim lack...

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 9:03 pm

Well I get an overwhelming feeling that skyim lacks any good characters and the main story was pretty average at best and the writing seems kinda poor.
It seems a little "yeah kill bandits slay dragon yessss now I have badass armour".
Where is the riveting story or memorable characters?

Depth, a decent story, and quests? Well your not the only one!. Skyrim seems to aim to delever a lot of shallow material. Yeah you have a lot of stuff to do, but it only really amounts to a crap ton of linear quests, that have no effect on the world, and to top it off, all the NPC's you meet are paper thin in character. With the simplistic quest you get from the Radiant quest system you might as well be getting MMO style grinding missions.

I totally agree. The environments and dungeons were all done excellently- which, in stark contrast to the quest lines, characters and combat system, makes me wonder what the game could have been. I feel like Skyrim is less of a complete game, and more of a platform for a game that will, (hopefully,) be finished a few months after the Creation Kit is released.

The game environment is stunning but the NPC's and speech is poor.

Yeah I have been thinking about this and... I don't know if it is due to being the ES game I tried, but morrowind was better for me. In morrowind even a quest for gathering flowers or mushrooms in the mage's guild seemed more interesting than most quests in skyrim.

The first 3 days of playing skyrim were epic. Fighting dragons, learning shouts, killing zombiesm etc. After that, the same thing is repeated over and over again. Not so strong dragons appearing constantly, more shouts which don't bring anything new to your game, nordic ruins with zombies waking up when you are close to them, more shouts, more nordic ruins, more dragons, more nordic ruins, more dragons, etc. etc.

I mean these were great ideas but bethesda makes them look ordinary by repeating them over and over again. There is something I am asking bethesda since oblivion: More diversity. Sometimes I think I should try oblivion again with a different character. But then I remember those oblivion gates that I have to shut down to end the game and I lose my interest quickly.

It seems that bethesda now only thinks in the first impact they give to gamers when creating a game. I feel awful for saying this because skyrim is still a great game

One cool thing that beth didn't overdo: forsworn

Characters are indeed shallow, though luckily it's not so black and white. There are plenty of characters that have sufficient dialogue, mostly the most important ones.

Blame the ridiculously small data size for this game, thats all i gotta say, the game is only 3.8 gigs on 360, and no self respecting BIG budget game now a days on 360 is under 7 gigs. So there could have been so much more, but for some reason, they only made half a game.

the characters in the dark brotherhood were very well done too, but i think that is about the only guild that was excellent, the others....are a bit meh.

I thought the DB was terrible as well, and the only interesting members can't be traded for the lame two they make you live with.

Devlin in the thieves guild is pretty clutch imo. Beaten, cynical old thief, Made wise by the demons of his past, while plagued by superstition and self-awareness.

In Oblivion.

The Count of Skingrad is the only truly MEMORABLE character I recall. I mean, Sean Bean was in it as... what was basically a more pussified Luke Skywalker. I honestly don't recall any other characters from that game.

Other than Patrick Stewart... but he doesn't count, he was dead inside of 30 minutes.

Did you even talk to the NPC's every mission, they give you lots of backstory, and information for the quests. I dunno what you expect, the DB was by far the best in the whole game.

Agreed, Oblivion was not much better IMO, very very lame most of the time, and the only awesome part was the very end fight between Akatosh and Mehrunes dagon.

I agree. I just wish they would stop: (DB spoliers)
Spoiler
Killing the Dark Brotherhood. Seriously, TES6 better not kill anyone in the Family. OK, maybe just one really characterized one, for dramatic effect. And enough with the "assassin gets betrayed" crap. There has to be more you can do with the archetype.

This is true, although the tree and the mage cracked me up, if you dont know what im talking about, do the whole thing again, and when the [censored] hits the fan, take a look at the three outside of the base, i dont know how to do the spoiler thing, otherwise i would have, i tried to make it as vague as possible.

I think I know what you mean. That point is coming up on my 2nd charatcer, so I'll keep an eye out. Thanks.
As for spoilers, in the reply box, there is a green button left of the font "thing". Hover the cursor over it and it shoud read "Special BBCode". There's a whole bunch of stuff there, spoiler tag among them.

Yeah, they were pretty unique. Now that I think about it, I like most of the thieves guild members too. All their backstories are interesting, I just wish they did more than just hang around the cistern. You can't even have them follow you like the Companions.

Oblivion. Awesome start and Patrick Stewart as the king with beautifully told dialogue. Skyrim just doesn't touch Oblivion in that regard and the quest lines.

To me Bethesda really skimped on this game badly and it shows like a budget movie. Thankfully the music score is pretty awesome but telling the story of Skyrim is just so poor. Amazing how this got GOTY for such poor implementation and yet probably got GOTY for it's massive world more than anything. For pure story telling and voice acting, the Witcher 2 beats it hands down and I'm glad Witcher 2 got European awards for it.
