Nope. Once they die they are gone. Maybe load an older save? Condolences.

Depends. I believe that sometimes a family member does. For example I think that if you kill the merchant in Riverwood, his sister takes over the store.

Same is true for the merchant at the general store in Markarth. I killed her and her son takes over the store immediately. It's actually kind of funny - as soon as i walk in he starts in on me with the "you want to talk to me after what you've done" line, but as soon as I ask what he has for sale, he's as friendly as can be. I guess money trumps family in the end.

Just an example of Skyrim's small problems - Lack of speech options and cosequences, in reality they should refuse to talk to you and refuse to buy or sell you anyhing.

They are supposed to, but that is not the case for all. The Blacksmith in Riverwood is one that has never been replaced before.

The Riverwood Blacksmith could be replaced by his daughter. It'd be stupid, but she said she wants to be a blacksmith. When daddy dies, she can be one.

She cooks. Child makes armor. It makes no sense, yet so much sense. Or the wife could just replace the blacksmith.

His wife is no smith. The only smith that I've seen so far, that gets replaced if he dies is the one in Riften (his apprentice takes over).

Meh...Yes, if we are obsessed with realism, you are correct. But it's still a video game. It would be better if their behavior was more consistent with the context of the situation, but recognize that this is a very big game, with a lot of voice actors delivering a lot of lines and an almost infinite number of variables based on the combnation of the game's size and the endlessly varied combinations of choices that different players will make. There is only so much the devs can do to account for that, so it will never be "just like" real life. I for one find a lot of the little quirks like that to be part of the charm of the Elder Scrolls series.

The one in Markarth can be replaced by her apprentice, as well.

If you are on PC you may be able to change his wife's profile to make her take over

You can try adding these factions to Sigrid's faction tab:

JobBlacksmithFaction
JobMerchantFaction
ServicesRiverwoodAlvor

And add the AI package

AlvorWork8x12

This should work fine.... if you are on PC of course

I agree which is why I only see it as a small issue

I think I recently lost the blacksmith-brother inside Warmaiden's. Adrienne's brother. Next to Breezehome.
The door has been locked throughout several in-game days.
IDK what happened there. He never seemed to come out of there so I don't know where he is.
Hope he makes it back sometime....Maybe he's on vacation :P

If it hasn't been mentioned already, yes. But only for certain merchants.
The WIndhelm smith will be succeeded by his female apprentice.
This is the only one I know of at the moment since I tend not to kill shopkeepers.

I had the same issue. The dragon landed, Alvor decided to be a hero, and was swiftly chomped and launched across Riverwood. I also was killed in the chaos, but not by a dragon, but by the guards who got in the way of my greatsword. The reload was successful, but unfortunately Alvor's wife died during the battle instead, frozen solid by frost breath. I went and talked to Alvor immediately afterward, and surprisingly, it triggered his response to be one of grief. I honestly thought he wouldn't pay attention at all to what had happened.

That actually kinda makes sense. You don't need any particular skillset to sell and buy stuff. You should be chatty and be able to haggle but it's not necessary. Smithing, however, requires a lot of stamina and practice. If smith would die I would honestly be surprised if his wife would stop cooking and would take up the hammer in his place.

This. But only if they saw you do it or you were charged with the crime.

Edit: And yes it is a small issue, but games like Fallout 3 had a lot of branching dialogue so it's not nearly impossible for Bethesda to do this. All they have to do is make it so npcs say what they normally say when you kill their friend, but make it so you can't trade with them. No new voiceacting required

Some should even try to kill you. If you managed to stay hidden, it should be an unsolved crime brought up by both guards and named NPCs alike.

Yeah Arcadia is dead on my game now. Pretty much since the beginning her shop was always locked, so I figured I had to do a quest or it was bugged or something....she joins Shadowmere :(
