Does your Courier behave consistently?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 10:05 am

Sometimes, having started a game with a particular role to play in mind, we end up having the character do things that just don't make sense. Are you as guilty of this as I am?

For the most part, my characters behave consistently. However, some things, like skill books, are unobtainablet without stealing and some people (House, for example) just have to be killed.

My characters do what they want, but they mostly follow their morals and are trying to make the Mojave a better place. To them that entails either Mr. House getting the Platinum Chip or the NCR gaining more control (note high taxes aren't necessarily a bad thing, but slavery is always wrong), and along the way they just try to find stuff that will help them on their journeys, even if that means theft.

I'm a pretty terrible roleplayer. I accept most every quest and pick every dialogue option I can irrespective of character. I pick my favourite perks (educated, comprehension, strong back, pack rat) on every single build, whether or not they fit thematically. (Traits too; my current character is basically Mr Sinister (off of the X-Men) and I still gave him Good Natured.) And though I try not to metagame too much, I'll still make a dash for my most needed implant/special weapon.

[snip]... Are you as guilty of this as I am?

Mojave is a harsh mistress. It will teach necessity and bearing with guilt.
But one thing I couldn't stand doing, even if I was badly trying to get that cursed
Legion safe-house key...
I just had to rescue the Teddy Bear for the little girl
and give it back to her. Really, the thought of ripping the toy in front of her was unbearable.
Forget about the safe-house...

I'm more of an evil bastard than Mr. House is.

I lie, cheat, steal, betray, and do basically whatever I must to accomplish my character's goals. Often this involves being nice and toeing a particular party line. Once I get what I want? All bets are off. There's a 50/50 chance I'm deep-sixing the fool who trusted me.

But the karma system doesn't know how to handle insidious, traitorous, sons of b's such as myself, so I always have very good karma.

sorry.serious reply now.i usually play good coz you dont stay evil for long, after killing fiends and ghouls i find it takes ages to lose all the karma again.
plus i like to do what i would if i was really there.i also look after number one usually and am really only helpin out to pursue my own goal but this time im
tryin to do whats in the ncr's interest not mine or the wastelands.there are so many different ways its awesome.never have i played a game through so many times despite what i said before.

I'm very consistent, except when it comes to skill books. Even my most angelic characters have to "steal" those things. I figure my guy just reads them over and then puts them back like good person would.

The only time you could say I'm inconsistent is when I play an Evil character. Since I don't think of evil alignment as being synonymous with rampaging psychopath, my evil melee cannibal legionary often takes the "nice" route in quests where the "bad" route is just to be a dike and kill people for no reason. A truly evil character knows that the ability to be flexible with morality is evil's principle advantage.

Is it? You do understand, of course, that all civilizations, including the NCR, are built on the backs of slaves. The NCR condoned the slave trade in FO2.

It may sometimes be a necessary evil, but an evil nonetheless and any enlightened society should have no need for it.

Evil is an outmoded concept. We are not battling demons, or dragons, we are rebuilding humanity.

Really where in Fallout 2 did they condone slavery? Would the laws making slavery illegal in the NCR be condoning slavery? what about the NCR rangers actively hunting down and attacking slavers outside their territory? I would appricate if you'd back up that statement with some evidence as so far everything says the NCR opposes slavery.

The NCR Bazaar at the capital had slavers plying their trade openly because of a simple loophole. If the NCR was truly, vehemently opposed to slavery, Congress could have ironed out that little detail in days.

My "good" characters tend to stay pretty good, although I will loot the starting areas dry for some quick start up cash. After that, they wont steal from someone they like ..... unless it's a unique item.

My "evil" characters on the other had, just take the easiest route to complete their goals, which means they also do a lot of good ... in a way.
Example:
1) Non allied raiders/bandits attacking a merchant will have my character rescuing the merchant ... he may come in handy later on.
2) Non allied raiders/bandits attacking NCR ... get the popcorn, enjoy the show, kill the survivors, loot everyone.
So even though the first one was a "good" act, it's still done for selfish reasons.

Its not the NCR Bazaar its the bazaar outside the NCR Capital. And a legal loop hole isn't a condonment. It should also be noted that during Fallout 2 the northern border of the NCR more or less ended at the Capital new territory to the north wasn't acuired until after the games conclusion.
Here's an example of a legal loop hole not being a condonement.
In 1993 Prince(the musican) wanted out of his contractual obligation with Warner Brothers. He couldn't get out or publish an album with another company while using his name. By changing his name to an unpronouncible symbol he exploited a loop hole on the contract. The day after the contract expired he went back to using Prince. By your logic Warner/Chappell condoned Prince screwing them over.

Most often a loop hole is an accident.

If the NCR condoned slavery then why do the NCR rangers reward you for killing them? Why are fighting slavery across the north? Just because some criminals find a legal loop hole to avoid punishment doesn't mean there actions are in anyway condoned. We don't now the details of the loop hole or how long its been there. The NCR couldn't act directly because if the government isn't bound by the law then no one is. Thus they look the other way if you solve the problem while the law is backed up in congress. A law can't be changed in days, with how legal language is how exact things need to be, they need to close the loop hole with out interfering with legitimate business. Its not that easy.

A clause defining slavery followed by another clause stating that the NCR will punish all slavers in or around its territory is all Congress would have needed to amend in order to give the slavers the boot. This is not the Constitution of a real country we're talking about here. This is a law document of a small city-state in a post-nuclear wasteland. This is before they get utterly bogged down in bureaucracy like they are in NV, and yet they did nothing.
