Dogs. How useless do you think they are?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 11:42 am

On a scale of 1-10. 1 being useless. 10 being necessary. Where do you you rank them, and why?

I give them a 1. because they always die like 10 minutes after i get them.

Having Meeko along was fun at lower levels, he tanked and killed quite a few enemies mostly on his own. I was careful with arrows if I shot any and if I had a follower at the time nothing he did was a problem either.

That said, at higher levels with stronger enemies a dog's lucky to get from where I found him to wherever I'm going next in one piece. Which is why I dropped Meeko off at Hjerim as soon as I got back to Windhelm and now he's a very contented house pet, not a road warrior.

How useful/useless a dog is depends a lot on your level and playing style, and IMO they aren't ever necessary.

I had Meeko for about 10 levels. He was solo killing bandit chiefs and stuff while I stayed back and used a bow, so I found him pretty useful. When he finally died I had switched to a sword, and then he jumped in front of me.

I'd give him a 5.

7, can be a pain, but on my heavily-gimped ranger, Meeko was essential at lower levels.

Only ever travelled with one, and he was quite useful. Only other "unowned" one I've met decided to attack me. So I vote 2.

Useless at level 20+ and that's being generous.

Only have experience with a certain daedric dog, and he nearly pushed me off a cliff...

Can't stand all the barking so a 1 for me. I never take a dog for that reason alone.

2

Their are somewhat cute and fun to have, aside from they die easily(their hitbox is way too high), and I can't tell them to stay at my home.

The only one I ever had, was forced upon my character. I have yet to do that quest again.

They never shut up, and they push the character.

I can't vote because there is no poll and there is not a negative option. The rating I give is less then 1.

Barbas is the only dog to stand close enough to push the character, and he is by far the most "vocal" of any dog.

He was at lower levels, but after 15 or so I stopped carrying him around with me (unless I'm feeling sad while I'm playing the game and want a few cute pixels to keep me company.)

I'd rate them a five.

1.

They are too noisy, push you off of cliffs and get in the way of your spells/arrows/anything...

Love them, but then I installed a mod that makes them essential. I can't imagine life without an animal friend, virtual or real life.

I picked up a stray dog once, I got him drowned under an ice flow. I picked up another dog and he barked the entire time I was sneaking through a dungeon, he got killed by some bandit.

I think I am doing better to keep the dogs of Skyrim alive by not having them as followers. I would like to be able to get a dog, then have them stay at my house, but don't they go back home after a few days of inactivity?

I told my stray to wait by the Belethor end of the market area in Whiterun. After I dropped off some loot in Breezehome, I went back for him. He was gone. A few days later, I was informed that my dog had gone back to his home (wherever that is). I guess he must have been in Nirn's version of Limbo during the intervening time.

That certain daedric dog was too much of a pain to use for long. Strong and immortal were not good enough to compensate for annoyingly loud and dangerously pushy.

Vigilance served me well, until one day we got in a fight with about 8 bandits. I don't even know what happened, but when I was looting the bodies after the fight, I found him dead. I drug him to the river and let him float freely over the waterfall. It was so sad.
I'd give dogs about a 7.

I wanted to leave Meeko at my house, but it doesn't work. He leaves after a couple days of waiting. Blue mountain flowers can kill Meeko at higher levels, so...2?

I used the dog from markath 1 time, in the first cave I went in it started to attack my follower arenea lenith and she quickly killed it off ... I've not used any useless mutts since.

There is a mod on Nexus to make your dog stay at your home: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=11789

Barbas:

Personality - 8
Usefulness - 2

That turd mows through enemies, but will toss you off a cliff or shove you into a trap just as quickly. I wonder if they do that on purpose just so either quest ending is enticing.

Meeko was much better - essential like the rest of the followers and I definitely liked being able to have an additional follower (1 human, 1 canine). I'd love to be able to keep him at my house rather than him wandering home after a couple days. I keep him with me and refraing from using fireballs and chain lightning.
