Don't forget Rememberance Day!

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 7:16 pm

Hey guys, I realise your all stoked for the release of a great game, but I felt inclined to sound a note of respect.

After all 11/11/11 will be this years armistice day, and the following sunday Rememberance Sunday

I hope you can all remember the lost, the fallen, and the forgotten, and give your minutes silence (amid the dragon-slaying and the herb-collecting). Those who fought in wars they didn't want to, and all those that gave several years of their life - if not their whole life, that we might know the world as it is today. This is particularly poigniant for us English, the Battle of Britain was so close, and Operation Sealion could well have been a reality - where it not for the sacrifices of soldiers, many of them barely men, from around the globe.

I don't want to be a killjoy - I was just reminded when I looked and saw the rememberance service on the Sunday of next weekend.

Thank you very much for your time, and enjoy Skyrim :)

I've already bought my poppy, and chances are Skyrim won't be delivered until after 11, so I'm good to go. :)

Finland didn't participate in WW2, we were busy keeping the soviets out back then. The time to remember and honor our veterans is Finland's independence day, 6th of December :)

I actually don't celebrate certain days to thank all the troops who've died in service to their country. I try to give thanks to them every day.

Finland didn't participate in WW2

It originated at the end of WW1, just for the record...

I don't like the poppy stuff. A good number of those troops in Flanders went on to murder the friends of my ancestors in 1921.

Ah yes, Veterans Day, Hang your flags with honor and drink a drink for those who protect your ass. Shake a Vets hand and say thank you, for without them, there wouldn't be the world you see today.

Few if any went on to murder anyone. No need to be so disrespectful to those who died.

I just don't like being told I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for them, when so many of them made such a concerted attempt to make sure I wasn't. I pity them, I don't venerate them.

I thought this thread was gonna be about Gunpowder Plot...

Anyway, 11/11/11 is also the last binary day any of us are probably going to live to see. I'll cherish 63.

The Finnish army was part of the RUssian army during the War to End All War*, and Russia was involved in that one (until enough people got pissed off about the Tsar's incompetence and general stupidity :hehe:).

*I love the irony of that name, and figure it helps reinforce the point of Armistice Day.

To me, Remembrance Day is about remembering one of the most pointless wars of the past hundred years; how unnecessary it was, how horrible the conditions were for a lot of the combatants, how little good it actually achieved, and how much life was wasted for no real reason. Someday we may even learn our lesson from it :(.

I have respect for people who are willing to go so far as dying for others, and believe they are a precious, rare resource that shouldn't be expended without due consideration and cause.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm a kind of annoyed that Beth chose to release a game on the eleventh of the eleventh. Although, I do appreciate that Australia technically gets it about a day before the USA :P (assuming the release date is local time).

I don't think the ones who volunteer are as much willing to die as they are willing to kill for others/their paycheck. The others usually not representing everyone, or even the common good. Plus, during WW2 there was a draft and other mandatory military service programs throughout the world, so, whether they liked it or not, they were forced to fight.
I'm one of those hipsters that thinks most, if not all, wars are senseless. They're temporary solutions for temporary problems at the cost human life. At times there were wars over non-problems, which is even more pathetic. Oh well, it won't change because I want it to, I suppose. :P

Oh, I'm well aware of that. And they're not to be wasted, either. But in among them are the people who, when it comes to the crunch, will willingly sacrifice -sometimes happily- themselves for the others. I also realise that after people actually get to a warzone, they're generally fighting more for each other than any distant concept or populace.

And WW2 doesn't matter, 'cause I was talking about WW1 :P (which probably had some of the same, but I doubt there was as much).
