We don't need disk drives anymore!

Post » Tue Jun 21, 2011 6:10 am

I've just realised I haven't opened my DVD drive in years. And yes, it's still functioning.

Anyone in the same boat?

I just basically download everything from the internet, or I use USB sticks.

No, all my games are on DVDs. Or CDs.

I use mine when I get bored, making it pop out and then slide back in is so much fun. :D

It's used occasionally to install games or watch movies I bought. Might upgrade to a bluray player since those are hard on the bandwidth to watch without a disc.

I can't rely on my internet bandwidth for digital downloads so I still use the DVD drive on my computer.

I'm not a big fan of downloading from the internet. So many things can go wrong when you download stuff.

Computer disintegrates mid-download?

I haven't had any problems, apart from exceeding my bandwidth limit.

I wouldn't get rid of my drive, by it comes in second place.

DVDs are not outmoded yet. But the day will come... maybe in 50 years. Look at how long the floppy drive endured, long after it had been surpassed.

I have 2 in my desktop, I only use it when I install an OS. In my personal backup/FTP server, there are 2 DVD drives, I ended up disconnecting them and adding more HDDs in their place.

I was actually slightly disappointed that my new PC didn't have a floppy drive...

When I had mine put together I got them to put one in anyway. It only added €1 or something like that to the cost.

I typically use it to burn mp3 CD's for my car. It's so I don't have to kill my battery on my netbook before going to class (I don't own an mp3 player). Or I to install an OS. I get all games digitally.

Considering that I like a hard copy of things I own, as well as millions of other consumers, disc storage is going to stay for a long time. Plus, what happens when you need to re-install your operating system, or you're just in the mood to do an upgrade? If you have a game-disc, installation is relatively straightforward. If you're using direct-to-drive you have to worry about DRM and whether you have enough space to store your software. (Especially using flash drives.)

Don't you mean disc drive? :P

I watch DVDs on my computer all the time. My PC games also require it (except two, which after installing are fine with me running sans disc)

We use ours rarely. I have both cd r/w and dvd r/w drives.

Last time I used the cd drive was to burn photos from the mother in law's ancient camera that she could view them on her outdated pc.
Last time I used the dvd drive was to view wedding footage that my FIL took of my BIL.
He was tripping that I can put pictures from my phone directly online, or that I can put them in a zip drive. He uses an ancient, heavy, videogamera.
Movies we have on dvd are usually watched on the 360's. Otherwise, it's streaming FTW.

I once spent an hour explaining to my MIL and her sister the difference between a dvd and a cd. They tried to play a cd in a portable dvd drive.

I didn't think anybody actually used zip drives...

I still use mine for games. I like to have a physical copy of the game in my grubby little hands...
