Don't upgrade to NVIDIA GTX 680

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 5:05 am

After a change from NVDIA Geforce GTX 560 Ti to 680: stuttering in Skyrim even though the overall frame rate is 60 fps with vsync on.
A friend has the exact same problem.

The stuttering also occurs at settings that work fine for the GTX 560 Ti.

Changing the driver to 300.83 helps, but doesn’t solve the problem completely.
Since the occurrence of the stuttering is unpredictable, it’s difficult to reproduce. So testing different options is time consuming.

At this point the GTX 680 is a downgrade to GTX 560 Ti - GTX 580. More frames per second, but potentially poor quality because of the stuttering.
Advice: if you’re planning to upgrade, wait until this problem is fixed. Hopefully it’s a driver issue, but perhaps there is something fundamentally wrong with the GTX 680.

Report this problem to the Nvidia costumer support, usually Nvidia is fast in fixing problems in their driver updates, but how fast depends on how many people will report the same problem.

P.S. If you are using the option "Adaptive (half refresh rate)" under vertical sync, don't, it doesn't work yet & will cause stuttering.

Another thing to try is uninstall all Nvidia drivers. Reboot into safe mode. Use driver sweeper to rid any leftover Nvidia files. Reboot. Install 680 driver. Reboot.

I bought a gtx680 at release. Been using it since March 24th.

I have no problems. The game runs nicely for me. Is there any stuttering ? No, not in my opinion. I always keep enabling more and more eye-candy until I get averages of ~40 fps. That means that in some situations my fps will be a constant 60 fps. In other situations my fps might drop below 40. (Top of the stairs in Whiterun is only 32 fps or so).

You will always have fluctuations in fps, no matter what hardware you buy, or what game you play. The amount of computation will be different, depending on what you see, and that will impact the amount of frames per second. Only if you get very high averages (and thus disabling lots of potential eyecandy) then your lows might be above 60 fps. You might think you don't get fluctuations, but you do. You just don't see it. Of course, this is only relevant info when people confuse stuttering with framerate fluctuation.

I use 8xMSAA + 4x Transparency SSAA. Very high SSAO, 1920x1200, 16xAF, Ultra settings, Bethesda high-res pack, a few eyecandy mods (Vort's, Water, etc). Using 301.10 drivers. Game is installed on an SSD. Suprising fact: I run on a stock E8500. (Ivy Bridge coming in 1-2 weeks). Using adaptive v-sync (but not the half-rate option). I don't have a constant 60 fps, but the game does feel smooth. No real stuttering.

So don't blame the gtx680. As long as you don't know what exactly is causing your stuttering, that's not fair.

Do you have an EVGA card? If so download EVGA Precision X and set your frame limit to 60, then just turn V sync off. That's what I did and I don't get stuttering or screen tearing, ever. You can also use Precision to setup fan profiles, that way your fan doesn't spin up to 80% when it really doesn't need to.

P.S. to disable V sync in Skyrim you have to open up the SkyrimPrefs.ini and set "iPresentInterval=1" to "iPresentInterval=0"

I have a hard time giving any credence to someone who set up a new account to make one thread and one post about this.

By the time I can afford one the driver support should be fine.

Sounds like it could be the 64hz bug too

Check here if you're still having issues after the driver update

which is why i am still hitting myself in the knee due to the fact i chose the ATI card over Nvidia card when i am buying a laptop.
Salesman: There are 2 models. One has an Ati, another has Nvidia.
Me: Which games better
Salesman: Nvidia performance is mostly stable and better. Plus, this nvidia chip is stronger than the ATI chip.
Me: Screw it, I dont trust Nvidia, gimmi the ATI

Regrets :(

3.1 ghz cpu for a 680 gtx hmm what is the recommended cpu speed for that card anyway ? i dont really keep up with all this hardware stuff anymore since almost all games are console ports and runs fine on old hardware, but i believe that CPU could be a bottleneck and limit your fps a good deal compared to your old graphic card.

Or perhaps a weak PSU.

Hope it's just a driver problem for you .
