There's a bit of discussion about whether it would be good if the next ES game was online, with more people preferring 4-player co-op over an MMO game. The problem with co-op in RPGs like Skyrim is: who gets to be the Dovahkiin? Who gets to experience the story? Well, why not design the game with 4-player co-op in mind? Don't make it essential to have 4 players, but when the game is played with others, the additional players should have roles to pick that are unique to the overall story! The Dragonborn is a prisoner and he or she has dragonborn-specific missions, but player 2 should have player 2-specific missions, player 3 shoul have his or her own missions, etc., which the other players can opt-in to tag along for the ride. Basically imagine your typical anime, like Cowboy Bebop. Sometimes episodes focus on the support characters. It's fun! This would greatly expand the experience. I know the franchise is already quite expansive the way it's going, and adding 3 extra, yet optional, quest lines would complicate things even more on a technical level (more bugs!), but why go the same route everybody is taking? Why not expand something that's never been fully fleshed out: co-op? In RPGs,
