Doom Character Statues

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 4:39 am

So according to some video I watched on Youtube or maybe on the DOOM 3 collector's edition, ID actually crafted sculptures of each demon and then took some sort of picture to implement them in the game as sprites.

I've always had a hard time understanding Cyberdemon's face as the DOOM II box art kinda conflicts with what you see on screen. I'd also like to see the live representations of these characters more fully.

I've searched the internet but to no avail. Does anyone know where I can see all of these sculptures?

The id software offices.

If I recall correctly, they're somewhere in Texas. But I wouldn't swear on it.

Mesquite, an eastern suburb of Dallas. I swear.

The original two or three were done by Adrian Carmack, in clay I think. Someone else was hired to do others, possibly in polyurethane...my memory is a bit defective.

For those that might be interested, mesquite is a smallish tree or shrub found in the SW US and Mexico. It's beans can be dried, ground and used in cooking. It's wood is popular for barbecue and smoke house.

I've seen a photo of one of the models, the Spider Mastermind maybe? I can't really remember it was years ago.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/hu/2/27/Doom-Spiderdemon_model.jpg (looks like something out of ghostbusters)

If you guys come across any, be sure to post em!

EDIT:

I did some digging and found some more, but not all of them!

Yes, well done. :)

According to the Doom Wiki, Adrian Carmack made the Doom guy, baron of hell and cyberdemon in clay (I still have a remnant of my memory, I guess). Then a gentleman named Gregor Punchatz did the others in latex foam on a steel frame.

Its amazing how different they look when limited to the engine used in the game. Besides the baron of hell, they almost look better in game because your brain interprets what it wants to see.

Growing up, I always thought his eyes were those little black dots (i guess his nostrils) just above his mouth. After looking at the statue his eyes are really next to his horns. This heavily conflicts with the box art of DOOM 2. My whole DOOM paradigm had shifted between my very own eyes (no pun).

Anyways, I still prefer looking at him the way I did as a child. He looks much cooler that way. Try ignoring his eyes on the sides. Its almost like hes permanently squinting, like an angry drill sergeant. :P
