Doom 4 'More Of A Cinematic Experience' - Carmack

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 8:03 pm

id Software's John Carmack has described in development Doom 4 as 'more cinematic' than the developer's upcoming shooter, Rage
Rage, id's first new franchise since Quake in 1996, is out in September - debating the merits of the FPS, a genre of Carmack's invention, and third-person games the programmer told NowGamer: "You can’t control the cinematic experiences as well [in first-person], but you do get that level of intensity, and that level of shock and surprise where it’s not you watching the guy on the screen, it’s projecting you into the game. That’s the core value of it, and that’s still what we’re working on."

Carmack added that id's future games would approach action differently to Rage. "We’re certainly branching out with the other products," he added. "Doom 4 is more of a cinematic experience – but Rage is very much the classic exciting, immersive, intensive experience. And I think it’s a stable genre, and I think there’ll be FPSs forever after, and I’m happy with that legacy."

Doom 3 took several steps in that direction and I could see embracing it fully. I just hope this doesn't mean they want to also further the survival-horror elements which I found dragged after a while.

I feel like it was kind of contradictory for the game to have survival horror elements with such a large supply of ammo, health and weapons.

There's few terms I dread more in the gaming world than "cinematic". It's not a bad thing in itself, but the way the vast, vast majority of developers choose to interpret it usually just serves to make the game more passive and less fun.

Where is that quote from?

Sounds like id Software is pushing the boundaries yet again. Which I will always welcome with open arms.

On the other hand, I hope this doesn't become Heavy Rain: Doom Edition.

If a more cinematic experience just means more kickass but short cutscenes, then that's awesome. They just need to keep them a bit short if they're not important, to keep the fast pace of Doom.

I hear cinematic and that makes me think "lose control of my character."

I am NOT okay with that.

Yeah, something I also don't like. But saying it will be more "cinematic" doesn't necessarily mean cutscenes, it can mean that there will be lots of places where people and demons are doing something other than standing or eating. Hard to explain, but it can mean that there will actually be LOTS of times when demons and characters are assigned paths, and sounds and lines, so that it's not just seeing demons standing then running around like crazy, which was seen in Doom3.

At least I hope it'll be like that. They might also mean that there will be more focus on post-processing in certain parts of the game, like speciall effects that change the view to enhance frightening tone, more demonic, since Doom3 mostly used red lights and nothing else, and maybe that's okay, but I occasinally got sick of seeing red lights that didn't scare anyone.

Have you had a chance to play Crysis 2 yet? I hope thats what they're talking about in terms of cinematic experience. It gives you the time to focus in on special events by holding down a single button...completely optional..but quite amazing if you do.

Just like in Gears of War, basically.

I liked DOOM for what it was at the time: a bloodbath with no reason to stop killing. I don't want limited ammo - I want hordes of enemies, 1000 bullets for all guns and a reason to shout "COME GET SOME!"

Really, I still think it should be a gore-fest with its original graphics. Not like Doom 3 (or "Quake 4 with a different Storyline", whatever you wanna call it). I don't want another Duke Nukem: Forever, because they too were technically the same at the times they were released.

Keep it original iD - we don't need more generic shooters to put people off this awesome franchise! ^_^

Cut scenes, no. Scripted events that keep you in the action, yes. I love anything that creates a more realized world for the player. This is never really accomplished through the use of cut-scenes, which effectively just take the player out of the experience as a whole. Well done scripted events on the other hand still allow for the player to feel like part of the experience. If there is more of this in the next Doom game, I am all for that.

I dont like the sound of that. His use of the word cinematic was vague enough that it could mean just about anything. I just hope he doesnt mean story driven with lots of cutscenes. Doom4 should be a throwback to when games were fun and not trying to be movies. Doom4 should be mazes, guns and monsters. Just tons and tons of that.

Definitly siding with you on this one. Doom 3 was a graphic masterpiece, but such a dissapointment in terms of gameplay. John Carmack's quote has made my heart sink. Another Doom 3 with better graphics bla bla bla...

Who honestly cares about the plot or cut-scenes? Doom used to be a fast-paced gorefest, a bloodbath of enemies with awesome weapons. Why are they trying to turn it into something its not?? :flamethrower:

It's kind of funny when you think about it, the original plans for Doom was to have an in-depth storyline/narrative with cinematics, and friendly NPCs with character development. But it was all scrapped because they didn't want it to get in way of the action.

So Rage, in a way, is a return to that original concept, just with vehicle combat included.
