DOOM plushies.

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 8:28 pm

OK, guys. I just noticed something. This is pretty much THE official Doom forum, on the Internet. As some of you may know, before then, there wasn't really one single online community that held all of the Doom fans in the world, or even the American ones, and we still haven't gotten to that level ourselves, but we're pretty much the official forum.

That brings us to Doomworld. As some of you may know, this is pretty much one of the biggest Doom fansites in the net, and it's creator needs no introduction in the DOOM community. His internet screen name is Linguica.

This, of course, evokes a rather humorous anecdote. Another relatively well-known Doom fan made a plushie called Hissy. http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Hissy. Anyway, a list of Doom fans was created, the goal being that it would get passed around from Doom fan to Doom fan so everyone could have a chance to touch a real life cacodemon.

Yeah, pretty nerdy. And pretty badly planned out.

Linguica kinda... kept it. For two years. Then so did the guy after him. Anyway, it's still getting juggled around by classic Doom fans to this day.

And then came http://ultravioletbat.deviantart.com/art/Pixel-the-Cacodemon-97594332. Much better quality compared to HIssy, but... no major questing for that little guy. He mainly sits around a desk in one of Sony's offices.

Well, you guys can see why I think why plushies are an important part of the DOOM fandom's history.

That brings me to my current proposition. One of the more artistically inclined among us should make a plushie of a demon from Doom. Of course, I doubt we'll be able to mail it to each other, seeing how things turned out for Hissy. But having an official online plushy is pretty much mandatory for THE forum about Doom.

So, that's what this thread is about. DOOM plushies. I hope it isn't considered spam.

I went to the free hissy website and I have to say I felt bad for a plush toy.

There's another one. It's one which I sewed together and gave to Toke at a netparty he came to.

(This is BahdKo btw)

We called it a "cacopet".

Edit: I perceive Doomworld and Zdaemon to be the Doom forum/internet hubs btw. This place here on Bethesda's forums is far too new to be any such thing.

Well, yeah. That's why we need the plushy. The surfacing of another plushy might just give this forum the publicity it needs to become an important staple of the DOOM community, particularly among classic DOOM players.

Not to mention that despite it's newness, it is also the official DOOM forums. So I feel it needs to be important to the DOOM community.

...And that's my logic on this.

In a few hours, the DNS for my www.doom2.net site will start to work (I had a nameserver die, kinda, and it'll take the internet some time to propogate the new ones).

When this URL starts resolving, it'll show a pic of Toke at my netparty, with his cacopet on his monitor. It's not a great pic of the cacopet, but it is what it is.

In your post it sounds like you're suggesting someone sew a Demon/Pinky equivalent of the cacopet? It could be done, it's just arts and crafts stuff. Maybe you could even sew one. That's how I made Toke's. I bought fabric and stuff and sewed it.

Not necessarily a Pinky (though it would fit, wouldn't it?). Maybe a Baron, or a Cybie, or if you're really involved an Arachnotron. Hell, even an imp could work. Anything, so long as it's ours.

I guess I still don't understand.

Kinda sounds like you want to make one (any one, doesn't matter) to draw attention to this forum?

If that's so, its... not like that... Linguica got his Cacopet as just a cool thing to have, and he had a couple graphics of it on the 'net (including a rotating .gif that got around). The rest of us thought it was great, it was hella unique. And the one I made, it was originally meant as a prize for whoever won the doom tournament at that first netparty I held in South Riding. Not enough people came to have a good tournament though, so I gave it to Toke, who had travelled the farthest to get there. Toke was really happy to get the cacopet, I didn't find out until afterward how much he liked it.

Nobody I know of ever made one for the sake of making doom history.. it was always just to have, or give away. It was an occasional part of what we did, not the focus of it.

I see it as a tradition in the DOOM community to make a plushy demon (so far, only plushy cacodemons have ever been made, as far as I know). I want these forums to have one, as a kind of mascot, really. And I thought that might bring attention to these forums, essentially.

Also, I'm very bad at sewing, so I don't think it could be me. I'll give it my best shot, but...

I can tell you with certainty that cacopets were not like a tradition with various doom groups/players. I can't blame you if that wiki, etc, maybe lead you to that impression. Almost nobody has a cacopet or has ever had one. Extremely rare.

BTW, Toke passed away in a car accident in 2006, and to the best I can remember, his friend Ganja has his cacopet now.

What's traditional is that Doom deathmatch and tournaments have lived on, and on, and on. Now there are 2 leagues of hardcoe players, one in USA and one in Europe, and they use different game configurations to compete. This has developed over the years and goes on today, using Zdaemon as the means of gameplay. Some of the big players have remained in the scene, some drifted away, and some new have come in. The gameplay skill is quite high, now. All of that is the part is staying like a tradition.

If you want one, why not.

After "Free Hissy," though... I don't know. I just thought it'd be cool if we made one and I thought I would put it out there for anyone with sufficient skills to try.

Also, sorry to hear about Toke.

Just tossing it out there-

By the Rules of the Universe, something made to be Iconic because things similar to it were Iconic will ultimately fail, beacuse people will feel the "fakeness" eminating from said Iconic item, and will shun it, knowingly or not. Similar to the Fishy Stick that roams in the Official Forums- the Fishy Stick is popular in TES, but other attempts to make, say a Fallout-specific version of the Fishy Stick has so far ended in failure as the Fallout NonFishy Stick never caught on. In Fact, the Fishy Stick has replaced it's upstarts in other forums.

The Official Doom Forums Plushie, therefore, will most likely fail as it is a blantant attempt to gain some of the popularity of Hissy. If you want to make a Mascot for this forum, make one that's pretty unique in the Doom fansites- if you are Dead Set for the Plushy, try a Plushy Soul Cube instead. Otherwise, I'd strongly advise against a new Plushy Cacodemon.

That was the thing. I said a plushy demon. Not a cacodemon.

That hasn't been done before, has it?

Tarrant mentioned a plush pinky. That might work. Or a plush mancubus...

You're missing the point.

Any Plushie Demon will most likely fail because it could be seen as an attemt to cash-in on the popularity of Hissy. Now, a Plushie Soul Cube could work better, since the Soul Cube is arguably the symbol of Doom 3, and could indicate that the Official Forums are looking to the future of Doom, rather than at the past. However, I'd still argue against a Plushie ANYTHING as the "Mascot" because, again, it could be seen as an attempt to cash-in on Hissy's popularity. Maybe something similar to the Fishy Stick- a purely online nonsensical .jpeg file that floats around, maybe "given" as a result of a unusually well-worded or well-recieved post would work better as a symbol. But it'll most likely seen as a fun thing to do, rather than a full-fledged mascot or icon. If I was making a Forum Icon, I'd try to stay away from what's been done already.

So... basically Pinky/Mancubus/Cherub Plushie... not good. I would be surprized if it caught on.

Soul Cube Plushy... better than above. IMO, stands a better chance of catching on. Difficult to make as a plushie, however.

Nonsensical .jpeg file "given" to other forum members... about the same as above, might be worse if it can't jump out of the Beth forums.

Something else entirely- hit or miss... but it may stand a better chance than a Demon/Soulcube Plushy/nonsensical .jpeg file.

I'd like to see a plushie Doomguy. Maybe with detachable (using Velcro) weapons!

One thing about making a cacopet is that, because it's round, its not as big a pain in the ass to make as the others would be. You make little segments out of the fabric and sew them together into a shell, and then you stuff the shell. It's not like you have to make arms and legs and a body that really has a correct shape. Its just a tomato-like ball.

It takes more stuffing to make it firm and round than one might think about at first, btw.

Nobody has made a "plushie" Pain Elemental or a Lost Soul. I think those could be good candidates for the amateur sewing-people among us (I include myself in that category).

But yeah if you want one, you'd be making it for yourself or to give away. The sense of creating a new icon or something, put that out of your mind, its neat to see in the wiki buuuuut cacopets have not been like, the driving force of Doom or anything.

--BahdKo

PS: if I remember correctly I made 2 when I made Toke's Cacopet and I believe I gave the other one to my mom.

Well, I can imagine something like Doomguy would be decently easy if one made separate cylinders for the body parts and then sewed them together, almost like Woody from Toy Story.

OK, guys. Screw the publicity. Screw whether or not this is seen as derivative.

This [censored] needs to be made.

Also, glad to know Bethesda and Co. now know more about DOOM culture, Gstaff!

Allright... WHY does it need to be made? Do other Doom forums out there have an official Doom Plushie? (I.E. more than one forum?)

No, I meant the Doomguy plushy, whether it's official to these forums or not. I think that's the best idea I've heard in a while.

You're referring to the concept of a "forced meme". I have to agree.

Although I think it would be cool to own a Caco pet just for the sake of having one, not because it's a tradition or anything.

Imps are my favorite, I want a plushy of them.

While this is the "official" Doom forum, it may never be as big as Doomworld or other similar communities.

However, while a plushy of a Doom critter sounds like a cool idea, it would also be neat to string together a community project - a 32 map megawad for Doom II from various members of this forum perhaps? Done before, many times, but if done right it would be a good way to get our existence "out there" sort of speak.

Besides, I've been wanting to put together a megawad paying tribute to Alien Vendetta. Best mod ever.

Back to the plushy thing, did any of you ever make http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A12461672?

I remember as a child getting these little discs of cardboard and winding wool around it over and over and then looping it through, and then you'd cut around the edges and be left with this little fluffy ball of wool. You could then stick eyes on it and - ta-dah! - plushie heaven!
