Doom Rogue-Like

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:22 am

While not officially a Doom game, it nicley blends Doom with a CRPG in a way that I'm not sure really satisfies the hardcoe fans of either. But I like it and I wonder if there others who play this as well.

Do you mean Rogue?
The only Rogue I know about is a 1980 2D DOS game that used ASCII characters to simulate a dungeon.

It has the ASCII maps just like Rouge but it is a fan made version of Doom. When you see an imp for example it is the letter I on the map but if you "examine" it you see a very good ASCII Imp image. You get XP for killing things and you get perks at level ups. I stumbled across it a few years ago.

Oh yeah, I was also a huge fan of Rouge back in the days of 5.5" floppies.

Repeat after me; rogue!

Rouge is a kind of makeup.

True. But I do sometimes speak in parentheses. I'm also fluent in Italics!

Back to the point of this thread. A few years back I saw that there was a Doom board game and that sparked my imagination on what if Doom were to have some RPG elements in it. Now while I realize that this is blasphemous to many Doom fans, it would work for me. I put some thought into it and came up with a system to “buy” attribute and skill points with the percentage points you get at the end of each level. Then I realized that I didn’t know if this was possible in the Doom engine or even where to start if it was. So I searched the internet and found Doom =>ROGUE<= Like. I have spent many many hours playing this game and have upgraded it as newer versions came out. So I was just wondering if anyone else has played or even heard of Doom =>ROGUE<= Like, or am I very much in the minority in wanting a little bit of character development in Doom.

I've never tried it, but I do play Angband daily, so I think I'll give it a go.

I’ve never made it to the end either, the highest I ever got was about level 10 or 11 plus 3 Hell Arenas. I found a level that one half of the map was a big empty room and the other half seemed to be completely walled off, the exit was on my side, the empty side, but there was a lot of growling coming from the other side of the wall. I fired a rocket at the wall and blew a big chunk of it out, but not enough to access the other side, so I fired again and made a nice opening for a veritable swarm of Barons to come through. Had it been live action Doom I would have run to the exit and not look back, but instead I decided to find out just what sort of treasures these guys were guarding. I carefully strategized each move, concentrating my fire to bring them down one-by-one, and if things got too hairy I knew exactly where the exit was… it was awesome!

Anyway whatever level that is, it’s the furthest I ever got.

Yeah, the DoomRl makes every other Roguelike look easy as pie.

I don't think it's a rather balanced to be honest, but no one seems to be complaing about it. :(

I haven't played it in awhile, mostly because it's frustratingly hard, and unlike Angband, there's no Wizard mode. :)

It's like Battle For Wesnoth. Over 9000 times harder than it should be. On the easiest level....
Except Battle For Wesnoth makes Touhou and the Mother games look hilariously easy on the hardest difficulty. :)

Not balanced as in some perks are way better than others or not balanced as in the minions of hell have an unfair advantage over you as interloper?

The latter. There is no logic behind it. It's like trying to play Contra, while on fire. Except that would be easier. :(
It's more of a "You can't win, and if you did, congratulations, Touhou is too easy for you." :)

Seriously, beating the Doom Roguelike should mean some guy should knock on your door and hand you $50,000. :)

I love roguelikes, but when Omega (One of the hardest, if not the hardest Roguelikes there ever was, long dead) is easier than your roguelike, you're doing it wrong!
It's like making a roguelike where Skeletons are resistant to edged weapons. :)

I used to play Rogue on my old 286 and even manged keep it up until my Pentium2 machine. I was never able to beat it though, I usually ended up starving to death. So DoomRL hasn't stuck me as being that much harder I guess.

It is almost like a Doom based PNP RPG (or I guess maybe the Doom Boardgame, I've never played that), you have the turn based combat that allows for a more stategic approach especially when coupled with the tactical posturing of your marine. Mostly people are put off by the (lack of) grahpics of rogue-likes, but if you can get past that they usually have a very deep level of gameplay.

I've played Doom the Roguelike, it's surprisingly addictive. I don't think I've actually gotten a single character through the entire game yet.

Complaining about dying too much? It's a roguelike: The point is to see how epic and/or stupid your death is ;D You can literally play these for ten years and never win. A lot of them are designed to be unwinnable: You just play until you get bored of that character and start again, or accidentally/intentionally-for-the-fun-of-it eat the cursed bread that causes your character's eyes to be replaced with fire that does constant 1hp damage whilst you run around blind and get eaten by a hoard of Giant Rats ^^

Doom: The Roguelike is only slightly less famous than NetHack, and yes it is indeed an epic game =D

Net...Hack...??

Nope, never heard of it! :)

I do remember that someone created a logarithm that could not only play but consistently win in the original Rogue. But yeah for a human player to claim they were able to beat a Rogue-like is only slightly more believable than if they claimed they could lick thier own elbow.

I've been playing Angband for quite a few years now, and I don't believe I've ever been been below the 30th level. It's futile but fun. :)
